Prayer

On this night in 1940, the city of Coventry suffered the longest air raid of any British city during the Second World War. God our Father, for what I have done wrong, forgive and

give me a generous heart that I may forgive those who have done wrong to me. Help me to break the cycle of hatred with goodness.

Amen

Parents and the wider community may not be aware that we recently lost a very beloved member of our community, Carole King. Carole had been a Teaching Assistant at Trinity for twelve years; and was particularly involved with the History and English departments. Please remember Carole and her husband, Victor, as well as the members of our community who she so admirably supported and who miss her dearly. Christ has no body but yours, No hands, no feet on earth but yours, Yours are the eyes with which he looks Compassion on this world, Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good, Yours are the hands, with which he blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, Yours are the eyes, you are his body. Christ has no body now on earth but yours. St Teresa of Avila wrote these words in the 16th century. There is a special, almost sacred duty in working with children. The roles that we choose – or that are chosen for us – can provide such an empowering and invigorating elixir against the cynicism of the every day. Carole’s days at Trinity were spent strengthening our students, and therefore strengthening our community. Our community owes her a great debt of gratitude for her compassion, will, friendship and good humour. As a community we seek the ways that our actions support those around us who need our help the most – and Carole indeed did do that. On behalf of Trinity Catholic School I offer Victor our warmest condolences at this incredibly painful time, and assurances that he and Carole are in our prayers. We pray also for those colleagues and students that mourn her so intently, and who are still, in sadness and hope, awaiting her return to work.

Our confidence can come that in her time at Trinity she changed lives – and there is little more we can ask. A Trust Fund to support vulnerable children will be established at the school, and The Finance Office are arranging this. The name of the fund is 'The Carole King Memorial Fund'. Donations can be made via reception. (Please make cheques payable to 'Trinity Catholic School'). Chris

GUIDE DOG ‘TRINITY’ VISITS TRINITY During the summer holiday I heard that Guide Trinity had been born and we have been eagerly awaiting her visit since the beginning of term. Many students throughout all years have helped raise the required £1500 to name a guide dog puppy. It actually costs over £5,000 to breed and puppy walk a guide dog puppy and the lifetime cost of a guide dog is nearly £50,000. Trinity is puppy walked in Warwick and her training is going extremely well. She is very outgoing and was not at all fazed by the 200 year 7 and 8’s watching her every move… in fact she gave a few barks of thanks throughout the presentation. Trinity was accompanied by her Puppy Walker and the National Breeding Centre Manager. Chris Hurst Head of Year 7

Drama Department Theatre Studies Year 12 Over the last 2 months the Year 12 class have been involved in a collaborative project with artist Andy Farr, Music and Art departments to create work for Armistice Day. The drama department devised a piece that explored the Forgotten Voices of the soldiers that fought in the war and this culminated in a wonderful and poignant performance evening on the 11th November. All students involved were a real credit to the school and we are very proud of their achievement on such an important day. Please take a look at Andy's work and the students’ contribution on his webpage or Facebook The Lost Generation.

Below are excerpts from the website www.lostgeneration.info

Gallery 150 Exhibition 28th October – 16th November 10 Livery Street, Leamington Spa

If you were 14 on the 4th August 1914 then either you or your friends would not have been alive 4 years later. 30% of 16-20 years olds died during WW1. And of those that survived most would have been physically injured and mentally scarred. Lost Generation is an initiative to make the WW1 centenary more relevant to young people in 2014 by involving them in the creation of original art works. During the First World War centenary I will be working with groups of teenagers from different schools to help them create work inspired by the lives and experiences of teenagers from 1914. Their work and mine will be used in a series of gallery based exhibitions through-out the centenary commemoration. Each will include paintings inspired by iconic WW1 imagery brought to life using contemporary teenagers, as well as film, music and original writing from the schools. I will also continue to update this site to include new work as the project evolves. Exhibition of art, drama and music from students working with Andy Farr. Includes work from Trinity School Leamington and Cockburn School Leeds.

FORGOTTEN VOICES Trinity School year 12 drama group performance of Forgotten voices of the Great War adapted by Malcolm McKay from the book by Max Arthur. Anon.

Original music composed by Trinity School as the soundtrack for the Centenary Vigil film. The piece for piano, flute and cello was written and performed by Emily Williams, Kit Marshall and Rhiannon Tucker. The inspiration was the idea of the anonymous soldier standing in silent reverie. CENTENARY VIGIL

As an act of remembrance for the First World War Centenary, Trinity School held a memorial vigil. The aim was for 100 pupils to take it in turns to stand on a plinth for two minutes. The memorial plinth was constructed on the school field on Guy’s Cliffe Avenue. The students adopted the rest on arms reversed drill stance. This was the position adopted by the honour guard standing in solemn vigil at military funerals and the pose adopted for Leamington’s memorial statue on Euston Place.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE DURING TERM TIME 2014-15 – INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

In September 2013, the Government introduced some significant changes to attendance regulations for pupils at school. The regulations will continue to apply during this academic year (2014/2015). The most important of these is in relation to term-time leave of absence. The amendments set out in Education (Pupil Registration) (England) (Amendment) Regulations 2013, govern all requests for leave within term-time. When considering such requests for a leave of absence, the school are obliged to act within the law. The amended regulations removed references to ‘holiday’ and ‘extended leave’, as well as the statutory threshold of 10 school days. It is now clear that Head Teachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances. If the leave is granted, head teachers are able to determine the number of school days a child can be absent for. The Government has not defined ‘exceptional circumstances’ as referred to in the 2013 regulations. It is for the Head Teacher to decide what he/she views as ‘exceptional’ and it is at their discretion if the circumstances warrant the leave to be granted. The school can only consider Leave of Absence requests which are made by the ‘resident’ parent. Each application for a leave of absence will be considered on a case by case basis and on its own merits. Where applications for leave of absence are made in advance and refused, the child will be required to be in school on the dates set out in the application. If the child is absent during that period, it will be recorded as an unauthorised absence, which may result in legal action being taken against the parent(s), by way of a Fixed Penalty Notice. Failure to make an application for leave in advance can also result in a Fixed Penalty Notice being issued to the parent(s). It is important to note, Fixed Penalty Notices are issued to each parent of each absent child, (for example 2 children and 2 parents, means each parent will receive 2 invoices in the amount of £120 each, totalling £240 for both children, this is reduced to £60 per child if paid within 21 days). Where a Fixed Penalty Notice is not paid within the required timeframe as set out on the notice, the matter will be referred to Warwickshire County Council’s Legal Services to consider instigating criminal proceedings under S444 Education Act 1996. Fixed Penalty Notices are issued in accordance with Warwickshire County Council’s Code of Conduct for Penalty Notices.

We greatly appreciate parental support to reduce the total amount of days lost due to holidays. We are committed to working in partnership with you to enable your child to reach their academic targets and to support their social development. For this to happen we need to keep individual attendance as high as possible - we all need to play our part.

Your child’s progress academically as well as socially is our shared priority

Warwickshire Secondary School pupils recorded 10,792 half day sessions of absence due to holiday in Autumn Term 2013 alone. This is a decrease of 4,700 on previous years. This is a positive

outcome as it means that 2,350 days of education was achieved.
