ARROGATE GALLOPS, GUN RUNNER WORKS AT MEYDANBy BloodHorse Staff

Juddmonte Farm's Arrogate powered down the Meydan

Racecourse stretch, in about a half-mile breeze March 20 in prepara-tion $10-million Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline (G1) March 25.

Trainer Bob Baffert said he did not have a stopwatch on the colt but he probably went in about :50 for the distance, just enough to sharpen him for Saturday's test.

"He's handling everything really well," Baffert said of the long journey from Arrogate's base in California to the Meydan quarantine stable and adjusting to the racetrack surface.

"He looks good to me," he said, adding that Arrogate will walk the stable area Tuesday morning and return to the main track Wednesday.

"I've never won it here (at Meydan), and it's totally different," said Baffert, who won the Dubai World Cup in 1998 with Silver Charm and in 2001 with Captain Steve. "I really liked that old track (Nad Al Sheba), but this is totally different (with) tighter turns. You need a lot of racing luck to get away from the gate. It becomes a jockey's race.

"And you never know until they start turning for home—is the horse going to show up? As a trainer, you're just hoping that at the quarter pole, they're moving."

Baffert said all the signs are positive for Arrogate but he pointed out that there is added pressure.

"Because I brought this great horse over here and I don't want to mess it up. It's still a horse race, and when it's a major race, I go into it focused. I don't take anything for granted."

This will be the first race for the son of Unbridled's Song after a 4 3/4-length score in the $12 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (G1) Jan. 28 at Gulfstream Park.

Baffert also had last year's World Cup third place finisher, Hoppertunity, gallop a half-mile Monday.

"He felt great," exercise rider Dana Barnes said after the brief drill aboard Karl Watson, Michael Pegram, and Paul Weitman's son of Any Given Saturday.

"Hoppertunity has been training better than he ever has, and he really loves it here," said Baffert, while comparing the 6-year-old horse, who enters off a one-length victory in the Feb. 4 San Antonio Stakes (G2), to the arcade game character Pac-Man. Trainer Todd Pletcher sent out Keen Ice and Neolithic to gallop approximately 2,200 meters (about 1 3/8 miles).

FROSTED, TERRITORIES WILL SHUTTLE TO AUSTRALIABy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Three-time grade 1 winner Frosted, the highest-rated son of leading North American sire Tapit, will join the

Darley stallion roster at Northwood Park when he shut-tles to Australia this year, while Prix Jean Prat (G1) winner Territories, who hails from the family of Street Cry, will shuttle to Kelvinside, Darley announced March 20.

"Frosted and Territories were elite racehorses and we are thrilled to have them join our roster here in Australia," said Alastair Pulford, head of sales for Darley stallions in Australia. "Frosted's grade 1 wins came in races won by some of the greats. The names you see in pedigrees. He is the best son of a champion sire and from a top female line. He is a top-class prospect for Victorians.

"Territories is by the sire of I Am Invincible and from the same female family as Darley's amazing servants Street Cry and Shamardal so there is no doubt he has the credentials to be a success at stud. He is exactly what our market will love," Pulford said.

Frosted entered stud at Darley at Jonabell this year for the fee of $50,000. The strapping gray is out of graded stakes winner and multiple black-type producer Fast Cookie (by Deputy Minister).

Bred by Darley and raced in Godolphin's blue colors, Frosted won five graded stakes, including a 14 1/4-length win in the Mohegun Sun Metropolitan Handicap (G1) in stakes-record time of 1:32.73. In his next start he took the Whitney Stakes (G1), his third in grade 1 company. He compiled a 6-6-2 record out of 19 starts and earned $3,972,800.

Also bred by Darley and raced by Godolphin, Territories established himself among the top echelon of European milers at 3 with a fast-finishing second in the QIPCO Two Thousand Guineas (G1) at Newmarket. He followed this with a dominant win in the Prix Jean Prat at Chantilly in his next start, taking the race in the second-fastest time ever recorded. Territories was also a high-class juvenile, finishing second in the Qatar Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (G1).

Territories entered stud this year at Dalham Hall Stud in England for £12,000. By sire of sires Invincible Spirit, Territories is rated equal to his champion juvenile Shalaa and higher than his group 1 sire sons I Am Invincible and Lawman, according to Darley. The 5-year-old stallion is out of Taranto, a stakes-placed daughter of Machiavellian.

"Andy Makiv and I went and inspected Frosted and Territories earlier this month and were taken by both horses. I have no doubt our clients will be very impressed by them when they see them," Pulford said.

Australian fees for Frosted and Territories will be announced at a later date. BH

CLASSIC EMPIRE REFUSED TO WORK, GALLOPED IN OCALABy Erin Sheat @BH_EShea

John Oxley's reigning juvenile champion Classic Empire did not break off in a scheduled workout

Sunday, March 19 at Palm Meadows Training Center, but seemed to be in good order March 20, according to trainer Mark Casse.

The Pioneerof the Nile colt was shipped to Ocala Training Center Sunday afternoon and Casse reported the champion colt looked fine when he galloped on the synthetic surface there March 20.

"He went out and he started off and just didn't want to go," Casse said of the March 19 work that was cut short. "Yesterday afternoon he got on a van and he's at the training center in Ocala. He galloped great this morning. Perfect."

The Canadian Hall of Fame trainer said Classic Empire will breeze at the Ocala complex in the next couple of days and then ship to Keeneland at the end of the week for his planned start in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G2) April 8.

"Our thought is to breeze in Ocala this week and then I'm going to probably get him to Kentucky," he

said. "(We'll) get him there and probably have a breeze there next week."

The conditioner said he doesn't know exactly what was bothering the Sentient Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile Stakes (G1) winner March 19, but thinks that a change of location may have helped.

"I really have no excuse for him. He really just didn't want to go. He went to breeze and he just didn't want to breeze," Casse said. "My thought is that he's had a lot of things happen to him there and maybe it's just not a great place for him.

"So after that yesterday, we went ahead and sent him to Ocala, and this morning he was a happy camper and galloped beautiful. We went back to our roots, that's where he started.

"Right now, he's a happy, healthy horse. I just don't know; horses can't talk."

In taking last year's divisional championship, Classic Empire won four of five starts, including the Breeders' Cup Juvenile and Claiborne Breeders' Futurity Stakes (G1). His only loss coming when he spun after leaving the gate in the Hopeful Stakes (G1) and lost his rider.

In the start of his 3-year-old season he had a couple of setbacks, including a hoof abscess that was discovered after a third-place finish in the Feb. 2 Lambholm South Holy Bull Stakes (G2) and discomfort

in his back after an aborted workout March 3.

His most recent posted work was March 12 at Palm Meadows when he clocked :48.95 for a half mile—the third fastest of 34 at the distance.

Bred in Kentucky by Steven and Brandi Nicholson, the colt was purchased for $475,000 at the Keeneland September yearling sale by Oxley. He has a record of four wins from six starts, with earnings of $1,520,220, and currently sits in eighth on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard with 32 points. BH

CONQUEST RUNNERS CONTINUE TO WIN FOR NEW OWNERSBy Ron Mitchellt @BH_RMitchell

When Rockingham Ranch and Chad

Littlefield's Conquest Farenheit outran rivals for a 2 1/4-length win in the $75,000-added Pasade-na Stakes at a mile over Santa Anita Park's turf course, the 3-year-old be-came the latest success for horses sold in Novem-ber as part of the Con-quest Stables dispersal.

Bred in Kentucky by Meadow Lane Stables, the Scat Daddy colt out of the Holy Bull mare Holy Smokie was initially purchased by Conquest for $130,000 from the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall yearling sale.

Conquest Farenheit was one of 100 horses sold by Lane's End for total receipts of $11,207,500 on behalf of the complete dispersal of Ernie Semersky and Dory Newell's Conquest Stables, at Keeneland's November breeding stock sale.

Prior to being bought by his current connections for $735,000 at the Keeneland sale, Conquest Farenheit had one win from two starts and earnings of $56,225. Now trained by Peter Miller, the colt improved his record to 3-1-1 from five starts and earnings of $157,745 with the March 4 Pasadena victory.

The expectation that buyers of Conquest horses in training were getting well-bred, accomplished runners with a lot of upside has been affirmed during the four months since the November sale.

According to BloodHorse data, prior to the dispersal 64 different Conquest starters had 81 wins

and cumulative earnings in excess of $5.7 million. For their new owners, 45 different starters have earned more than $900,000, with 20 wins to their credit.

The biggest post-dispersal success story has been Conquest Mo Money, who was unraced for his previous connections. Since his purchase by Judge Lanier Racing for $8,500, the Uncle Mo colt trained by Miguel L. Hernandez has won all three starts at Sunland Park, including the Riley Allison Stakes and Mine That Bird Derby, and earned $132,900.

Conquest Enforcer has been the leading earner since the dispersal. The $785,000 purchase won the Mathis Brothers Mile Stakes (G2T) Dec. 26 and has earned $152,000 for new owners Loooch Racing Stables, Imaginary Stables, and Raquel Ritchie. While trained by Mark Casse for Conquest, the son of Into Mischief had four wins, all in stakes, from seven starts. He now has a record of 5-0-3 in 10 starts, with a bankroll of $512,640. BH

McCRAKEN BACK ON TRACK, SETTLED IN AT KEENELANDBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Janis Whitham's undefeated multiple graded stakes winner McCraken had his first work March 20 since

being relocated to Keeneland to prepare for a start in the $1 million Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G2) April 8.

The 3-year-old son of Ghostzapper—Ivory Empress, by Seeking the Gold, worked after the renovation break, effortlessly gliding five furlongs in 1:00 and galloping out strong. The splits were :12 3/5, :26 1/5, :37 1/5, and :48 1/5. Regular rider Brian Hernandez Jr. flew in for the work, which earned the bullet among seven at the distance.

"I'm going to run here so I decided to come up a little earlier and give him a few works over the track," said trainer Ian Wilkes, who previously had McCraken stabled at Palm Meadows in South Florida. "You want everything to go right. I didn't want to have to ship on top of the race where something could go wrong. We'll give him time to get acclimated. There is a little cooler weather, and the horses love it."

Having won the Sam F. Davis Stakes (G3) Feb. 11 at Tampa Bay Downs and last year's Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) at Churchill Downs, McCraken already has earned 20 points through the Road to the Kentucky Derby qualifying series. He ranks 12th on the leaderboard as of March 18, sharing the same number of points as Iliad, Sonneteer, and Cloud Computing but placed ahead of these because he has more earnings in non-restricted stakes.

McCraken had been heading toward a showdown with Tapwrit in the Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby (G2) but bypassed the race because of a strained ankle from which he has fully recovered, according to Wilkes.

"I couldn't stress this enough before, it was just a minor thing," Wilkes said about the strain. "I could

have run him but I might have not liked the result. The horse has taken care of me, why would I not take care of him? If I didn't get the Sam Davis race, then I would have been in trouble. But I got a good race in him, and everything is where I want to be. I needed to let that ankle quiet down and go on."

When Hernandez settled into the saddle before the March 20 work, he said it felt as though the colt had grown since his last race. Wilkes said he told Hernandez that missing the Tampa Bay Derby may have been a hidden blessing.

"The colt has filled out more and he's stronger," Wilkes said. "Things happen for a reason. You may not like it, you may not want it, but I think just in that short time he has really changed on me. He's a different horse."

In other news out of the Wilkes' barn, McCraken's year-older half brother, Bondurant, also worked, covering a half-mile in :48. Wilkes is aiming the son of War Front, second in Gulfstream Park's Canadian Turf Stakes (G3T) March 4, at the $300,000 Maker's 46 Mile Stakes (G1T) to be run April 14 at Keeneland.

Another Wilkes runner at Keeneland is Lothenbach Stables' stakes winner Sonic Boom, who is to run in the Transylvania Stakes Presented by Keeneland Select (G3T) April 7, opening day of the spring meet. BH

WASHINGTON'S PEGASUS SALE RETURNS AFTER HIATUSBy Ron Mitchellt @BH_RMitchell

Six years ago, renowned Washington cardiovascular surgeon and researcher Dr. Mark Dedomenico staged

a boutique sale of 2-year-olds in training as a way to intro-duce Northwest horsemen and women to his state-of-the-art Pegasus Training and Rehabilitation Center.

While the sale achieved its goal of showcasing the facility, it also produced multiple grade 1 winner Belle Gallantey, one of many winners emanating from the Pegasus sale that year and in 2012, the last year it was conducted. Now, the auction will be renewed Tuesday, March 21 in Redmond, Wash.

With 10 head withdrawn, 27 horses are scheduled to go through the ring during the sale that begins at 1 p.m. PT. A pre-sale training session is scheduled for March 20 during which the sale horses will deliver strong gallops, rather than the traditional juvenile sale breezes.

Initially purchased for $10,000 by trainer Mike Puhich, who oversees the Pegasus operation, at the 2010 Keeneland September yearling sale, Belle Gallantey was sold as a 2-year-old at the Pegasus sale for $30,000. The daughter of After Market went on to win the Delaware Handicap and Beldame Stakes (both G1).

According to the Pegasus website, of the 45 horses sold or entered in the previous two sales, 43 (95.5%) have started, with 38 winners (88.3% of starters), through Dec. 31. Of that group, there have been a total of six stakes winners and sale horses who combined have won more than 125 races and earned more than $3.2 million.

"When we first started it, it was a showcase sale to drum up some new business—to let people know we were here and that we did good work as far as breaking new babies—and let them see the rehab facility," Puhich said. "We did really well... as time went on a lot of those graduates went on to do some amazing things, especially considering the prices they were offered for."

The Pegasus team decided to bring the sale back following numerous requests.

Dedomenico, who campaigns an extensive stable with Hall of Famer trainers Jerry Hollendorfer and Jack Van Berg, and raced Eclipse Award winner Blind Luck in partnership, owns 95% of the horses on offer Tuesday. The 2-year-olds were purchased as yearlings at a sale in Washington or at the Keeneland September yearling sale, Puhich said, for the purposes of being put in the sale.

Included among the sires with offspring cataloged this year are Bodemeister, Candy Ride, Gemologist, Ghostzapper, Graydar, Into Mischief, Malibu Moon, Pioneerof the Nile, Shackleford, Sidney's Candy, Street Sense, To Honor and Serve, Uncle Mo, and Union Rags.

"When we bought some of these horses in September, they were by sires we thought could go either way and we're lucky that Shackleford and Gemologist have done some good things," Puhich said. "We mainly got some young mares in foal to good stallions at reasonable prices."

Although the Pegasus owner is prepared to take back and add to his stable any of the horses that do not meet price expectations, Puhich said Dedomenico also gets great satisfaction when sale grads achieve success on behalf of other owners.

"He thought that was the greatest thing in the world," Puhich said of Dedomenico's reaction to Belle Gallantey's achievements. "He never once said 'we should have kept that one.' It's more about getting new people into the game, generating some new bloodlines up here in the Northwest.

"We are more than happy to keep something if they don't bring enough here."

Catalog pages, Conditions of Sale, and videos and photos of horses consigned are available at www.pegasustrainingcenter.com. BH

SIENA FARM, WEST POINT BUY INTO ALWAYS DREAMINGBy BloodHorse Staff

Siena Farm and West Point Thoroughbreds purchased a minority interest in promising 3-year-old colt Always

Dreaming, St. Elias Stables' Vinnie Viola confirmed March 20.

Trained by Todd Pletcher and owned by MeB Racing Stables, Brooklyn Boyz Stables, Viola Racing Stables, and St. Elias Stables, the son of Bodemeister—Above Perfection, by In Excess, is under consideration for the $1 million Xpressbet.com Florida Derby (G1) April 1 following a gate-to-wire win by four lengths in a 1 1/8-mile allowance race March 4 at Gulfstream Park.

"Always Dreaming is a budding superstar and won his last two races in the easiest of fashions," said West Point president Terry Finley. "We want to thank the Bonomos and the Violas—this is an extraordinary opportunity for our partners to experience the magic leading up to the Kentucky Derby."

"There was buzz about Always Dreaming all winter because his works were so impressive," said Siena Farm

chairman Anthony Manganaro. "Bodemeister ran one of the gutsiest races of the modern era in the Kentucky Derby, and there's significant stamina influence on the dam's side, so we're optimistic the colt will continue to blossom as the races get longer."

Bred in Kentucky by Santa Rosa Partners, Always Dreaming is a half brother to grade 1 winner Hot Dixie Chick (Dixie Union). Agent Steve Young purchased the colt for $350,000 from the Dromoland Farm consignment to the 2015 Keeneland September sale. BH

NUOVO RECORD RETIRED, BRED TO LORD KANALOABy Naohiro Goda

The 2014 Japanese Oaks (G1) winner Nuovo Record, who won a total of four graded stakes, has been

officially retired announced Makoto Saito, who trained the mighty mare for five seasons.

Reiko Hara's homebred is by Heart's Cry out of Omega Spirit and finished second in four grade/group 1 races including the 2015 Longines Hong Kong Cup against males. She earned ¥456,716,000 (US$5,120,663) with a record of 6-6-1 from 23 starts.

Nuovo Record shipped to the United States in early November 2016 for the Breeders' Cup. Saito decided to keep her on the West Coast after a disappointing second-to-last finish in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1T) at Santa Anita Park. Three weeks later, the Japanese mare displayed a very gutsy performance at Del Mar, winning the grade 3 Red Carpet Stakes by a nose over Arles.

The connections expressed keen interest in sending Nuovo Record back to California to represent Japan in the 2017 Breeders' Cup. However, after her last effort where she finished 10th in Kinko Sho (G2) at Chukyo March 11 they agreed it is in the best interest of the 6-year-old mare to retire her.

Nuovo Record is currently at Shadai Farm, where she was born in 2011, and has been covered by Lord Kanaloa, the 2013 Japanese Horse of the Year. BH
