RICK BRAGG, NO TWITTERBy Mike Woodard [email protected] Ok, the headline is a joke. Rick Bragg says he’ll cut his thumbs off before he considers twittering. And speaking of thumbs, Rick says he thought that covering the Afghanistan Russian war in the 80’s that he’d die by being run over by a Russian two ton truck with a 50 caliber machine gun on it. Instead Rick said, “I’m going to die by being run over by a young lady in a big SUV with her thumbs going like this.” Rick tilts his head down and pretended he was using his thumbs on the keyboard of a cell phone. As Pulitzer Prize winning author, Rick says he got a lot of grief for the pay the University of Alabama gives him to teach journalism...that until Nick Saban arrived. (note Nick Saban, $4 million a year). Rick spoke on literacy this week, got a little serious there for a bit, but it didn’t last long. “Literacy is the best drum I can think of to beat on.” I noticed that Rick can’t even talk about literacy without making an action story out of it. Rick seems to be all about stories and expressions. So much so that it reminded me of a story...oh yeah, but I guess I better finish this article about Rick. Rick says he never did like the straight walk. “The only prayer I ever said in school got me suspended. I said, Thank you Lord for blessing our sinful bellies with this food. For some reason the teachers didn’t like that.” “Those who experience the gulf
between the haves and the have nots make better writers.” is Rick’s explanation of why so many good writers come from the predominately illiterate and polarized south. Rick can’t speak for very long without rekindling some old story or two from his youth. “My Uncle Bill, Wild Bill we called him, worked as a repo man. There is something fun about taking someone’s car and having them shoot at you. He told me one time he took a car on a hot summer’s day in August and when he got home he heard a hissing noise in the back seat. He looked under a cloth and found a baby bottle with ole milk that was going bad hissing out of the bottle. He picked it up and the nipple blew off and hit him right in the eye.” Now, that’s a family history story if I ever heard one. Or how about the time Grandma had seven stair step children in the old split rail shack when a green cloud tornado dropped down in the holler and started across the ridge to the shack. The seven youngun’s started crying when they saw Grandma worried. So, in order to calm them down she starting praying and speaking in tongues. The kids were so entertained they forgot to be scared. The tornado turned away and they were safe. Grandma said, “Damn, I thought he had us for sure that time.” Rick says there are three types of people: Those who do right all the time. Those who do right when they can. And then there’s us. Rick paints a picture with words. He says good writers are good story tellers that
can make you see the story with words. He says the University of Alabama has good story teller journalism students who are going to make their mark in the world. “UA is the best place to hire a writer from of anywhere.” (But, don’t twitter!)
TUSCALOOSA WINDSJUST ENJOY MUSIC
Lauren Heartsill The Tuscaloosa Winds invites all community players to join their ensemble. Tuscaloosa Winds is an ensemble that helps people dust off their old instruments and have fun again by playing music. Max Wilson, 69, has been playing in the Tuscaloosa Winds since February 2006, the year it was founded. Wilson’s love of music reminded him of his younger years. He began playing music when he was in fifth grade, but his first memory of music came much sooner.“I remember hearing bands marching through the streets,” Wilson said. “One time when I was four, I followed the band into the football stadium.” Wilson said his parents had trouble finding him. “They always remind me of that story.” Wilson said with a smile. Wilson said playing in
the Tuscaloosa Winds is spiritual and calming. He urges people from the community who have a musical talent to come out and enjoy the fellowship. Debra Wills, a music education major at the University of Alabama, wants the same thing. “This group is very important for the community,” Wills said. “It is a unique opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to make music together.” Wills said the ensemble played entertaining music that, although it took a little practice, always came together. “It is fun and laid back but still challenging for most people,” Wills said. The ensemble is run by graduate students and was formed by Carl Hancock, a music educa-tion professor. The group meets on Monday nights at 7:30 p.m. at the Moody Music Building on the University of Alabama campus.

Rick Bragg, professor of Journalism at UA, tells homespun stories about life which are very entertaining.
Sarah Kate Sullivan has already racked up an abundance of honor and opportunity, and now she adds to it a year of study in Argentina as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar. A graduate of the University of Ala-bama with a double major in Spanish and journalism, Sarah Kate said her year of study in Buenos Aires will be for a graduate degree in international political economics. She said this is "the right time to be studying this." Since her graduation, she has been employed in the Washington DC office of Representative Artur Davis, and she said that practical experience gave her some valuable insight into politi-cal and economic concerns, not only nationally but also internationally.

EDITOR’S COMMENTS...
Tuscaloosa’s7-Day
Forcast
March 13-March 19,
2009
Which of these cities get the least rainfall: New York
City, Miami, or Seattle?
I’m always looking for a new business venture. I think being an entrepreneur is like being an alcoholic. I recently attended a publishers seminar and when asked to introduce myself said, “Hi, I’m Mike, I’m an entrepreneur and I haven’t started a new business for one year”. To which everyone in the room said in unison, “Hello Mike”. Yep, just like an AA meeting, but I guess you would call it a EA, Entrepreneurs Anonymous, meeting. So, here I go again! I’m starting a new publication named “Welcome To The Neighborhood”. It’s for newcomers, people who have just moved into new digs in Tuscaloosa County. The idea is we’ll reach them before they develop their buyer habits. When a person moves into a new location they have lot’s of decisions to make. I want to help advertisers reach those people before they’ve made ‘em. I’ve thought long and hard about this, as I do every new venture. At last count I think I’m up around 15 ventures in my 30 year business career. A person who has just moved in doesn’t know where the best place to buy much of anything is in their new home town. They’ll want to fi nd a new dentist, someone to cut their hair, or a doctor in case they get ill. They’ll want to fi nd the best places to go out to eat, where to buy their clothes, who is best to work on their car if it breaks down...and on and on and on. A person who has just moved into a new place typically will want to dress it up a bit. They’ll want new curtains or blinds, and they’ll fi nd out their old furniture doesn’t look as good or fi t as well as it did in their old place. In short, a new mover is a blank slate for deciding a lot of things about their future buying habits and they typically spend a lot of money getting set up in the fi rst few months. Once a person establishes “buyer habits”, they can be very hard to break. For instance, I’ve been with the same bank for over 10 years, I’ve have the same lady cut my hair for the past 13 years! I frequent the same restaurants repeatedly. It’s hard to get anyone to change their buyer habits. There’s a reason people keep doing business with the same people year in and year out. Trust. If you get a good deal, a quality product or service, at a fair price, and make a friend with the people at the companies you do business with...why would you want to change? We have advertisers that will offer great deals to people in order to get them to come over and do business with them. I urge all business people to remember, it’s a lot easier to provide good service and low prices and keep a customer than it is to constantly be trying to get new ones because of the ones you’ve lost. But, every business loses customers. Why? At a minimum because they move away or they die. So we’re going to offer a new product to reach people who’ve just moved in and do it in a VERY special way. Nothing like Welcome To The Neighborhood has ever existed in Tuscaloosa before, I assure you of this. And it will complement the Tuscaloosa Sun, which reaches the people who have already been living here for a while. If you have a business and want to reach the people who have lived here for a while, advertise in the Tuscaloosa Sun. If you have a business and want to reach the people who have just moved in, advertise in Welcome To The Neighborhood. I’m giving in to my entrepreneur addiction again. Now I haven’t started a new busi-ness in four days.Mike Woodard, PublisherTuscaloosa Sun

- TREES . Fertilize newly planted trees and young trees now using a slow release 1/2 nitrogen water insoluble mix. A 6 to 9 month release is preferred. It’s a good time to prune limbs on deciduous trees. If there are real large, it’s best to leave that to a professional. Two things, you might hurt the tree if you don’t know what you are doing...and you might get hurt! If you prune smaller trees yourself remember: If you cut pine, juniper or spruce limbs back to where there are no needles, that limb will die. It will not regener-ate needles. Cypress and yews will regenerate IF you cut them in dormant stage. Thin limbs in small Bradford pear trees as they will grow too thick, making each limb smaller and more subject to breaking. Be aware that many trees produce copious amounts of sap as they gear up for spring. This is called “bleeding”. It’s usually not a problem for the tree, but it can look pretty ugly. These trees it’s best to trim after their leaves become fi rm later in spring. These are dogwood, birch, maple, yellowwood, and magnolia. For More Information Call Browns’ Nursery at 556-7535

Children’s Corner Kids are like sponges. They absorb. But the similarity ends there. While sponges absorb, they shrink and disintegrate before long. Kids, on the other hand, soak up day to day experiences and when the right mindsets are instilled, they continually thrive. That’s why it’s important for parents like you to carefully select the toys they play with. Associat-ing fun and play with learning is a fundamental aspect of every child’s growth. And one of the best ways to make this happen is through educational toys.
It All Starts at HomeThe home front is crucial to a child’s development. This is where curiosity is fi rst explored. This is where a child learns about colors, shapes, and sounds, what Yes and No mean, and that asking “why” can almost always generate an explanation. The fi rst lessons brought about by childhood generally come from the people around the household. That’s why all activities of your kid should be carefully selected. The right books, appropriate TV pro-grams, and educational toys can supplement and enhance your child’s learning process, making the early stages of learning easier and enjoyable.Lessons of PlaytimePlaying is every child’s fi rst priority. Playtime may only seem to provide pure entertain-ment, but it is also an integral part of your child’s mental and emotional growth. While it’s good to provide children opportunities for skill formation, such as music or art classes, it’s also ideal to give them ample time to play. Doing so, would provide the following benefi ts:- Personality development- Awareness of their potentials- Promote independent thinking- An avenue for creative thinking and problem solving- Improvement their motor skills- Enhance their ability to think and communicate- Value-formationGuidance is essential to bring out the best in children. But it doesn’t mean that you should totally organize the whole experience for your child. The important thing is to provide supervision and the appropriate tools for play and let your child take it from there.Toys that FitGiving your child high-quality educational toys will liven up and enhance the process of sensory and learning development. The right toys for the right age needs to be considered too. A rattle wouldn’t capture the interest a fi ve-year-old kid. Here’s a quick guide on what educational toys children may enjoy at a certain age:Infants – The keywords are soft, safe, and colorful. Vividly colored rattles and squeaky toys will stimulate their sense of touch, sight, and hearing.1 to 2 years – This is a stage where children start learning how to maneuver the things in their hands. They are also beginning to discover that some things are paired together. Toddlers will enjoy building blocks and toys that will allow them to identify and match shapes.2 to 3 years – Children are beginning to get more creative at this age. They like role play-ing with other kids or by themselves. Puzzles, Play Cubes, and educational toys that stir their imagination are the best options.4 to 5 years – Kids are into creative thinking and decision-making by this age. Educational toys that can help enhance these developments include puzzle games and constructions toys.As children grow older, they become more independent in their choices of what toys to play with. They usually forego free play for games that involve rules and friends. They learn to be competitive. This is the time where parents’ guidance is most crucial. But if you’ve established the foundation by providing your child with educational toys early on, then you may have a child who’s well-developed emotionally and smart to boot

Women’s Forum
Women fi nding themselves at the stage labeled “midlife” (read 40 and up) may be in a tumultuous period of transition that can be confusing and scary. Menopause, empty nest syndrome, divorce, aging parents, downsizing, etc. can come hand in hand with yet another transition: a career challenge. Midlife women should fi rst realize that they are not alone. The MacArthur Foundation study “Midlife in the United States” found that 36% of women have experienced a midlife crisis by age 50. Many of them are looking to new careers as part of their solution to how life is unfolding at this time. Divorce often adds to the need to fi nd a career because of distressing fi nancial realities. The MacArthur study found that the divorce rate for women in their 40s is higher than that of those in any other age range. And if they have spent years at home raising their children these women fi nd themselves without “marketable” skills and are likely to panic.Another reason women change careers at midlife is because they are looking for fulfi llment. Some may have already had a successful career or fi nished putting the kids through school. They are ready for more: possibly work that gives back to their community or expresses more of their creative spirit. · How to Make a Successful Career Change During MidlifeRemember that you are a veteran: you have been through several life transitions before reaching this one. Like any growth period in your life there is bound to be fear, stress and confusion. Here’s the great part about getting through this one: you get to use all the life skills and wisdom you have been accumulating to make it work. Therefore, it is important take the time and space to refl ect on this life-altering decision. Let your choices be less driven by fi nancial need, and be more about your talents, desires and life purpose; in short a decision that makes you feel great. Again, remember that you are not alone. The Pathfi nder Center reports that more women over 40 change careers than those in their 20s and 30s combined. And because of the demand for career transition services, there are many resources to explore: books and tests about aptitude, interest, values, style and personality. The possibilities can be overwhelming. Here is where Career Transition Coaches come in. At minimum they will help you with a thorough evaluation of the physical, emotional, fi nancial and professional aspects of your life. But if you want the best, you want a coach who will help you discover what hasn’t worked for you. And that coach should be a guide to help you ingrain the beliefs, attitudes about life and yourself that will lead to the kind of prosperity you deserve. You will want someone at your side as you consider taking huge risks in order to step into a bigger idea of yourself. It means creating new habits and a new self-image. Imagine someone standing with you who sees the greatness in you that you cannot yet believe in.· Why Midlife Career Changes are WorkingWhile women at midlife may face obstacles in returning to the workforce or start-ing a new career, they are making it work. The number of women making more than $100,000 has tripled in the last decade. And women in their midlife years are poised to add to these numbers because they have the skills, confi dence and desire to pursue their dreams. Statistics show that women’s ability to fulfi ll their dreams increases after age 50. So there is a lot of reason for optimism. Take heart and embrace the challenge.

THE OTHER BUSCH TAKES ATLANTA KOBALT TOOLS 500
For a while it seems like the only person who could lead a lap was Kurt Busch. Kyle, Tony, Jeff, Dale…they stayed in the rear view mirror practi-cally the whole way. At-lanta’s Kobalt Tool 500 last weekend was “the other Busch’s” race. Typically I write about Kyle Busch, as he’s been the fastest guy around, and the media darling….mostly just the fastest guy around. At least last year he was. Jeff Gordon pulled a second place run out of the hat, and I have my sneaky suspicions that Jeff is going to run very strong towards the cup this year. It’s about his “time”.
And Earnhardt...oh, Dale, I don’t know when you’re going to regain the punch. Dale came in 11, it’s respectable, but not in the hunt. Carl Edwards, Tony Stewart, Brian Vickers, Jimmy Johnson...they all had strong runs. Next week is the Bristol race. Food City 500….auta be a good one.Little short track, stands all around. Only a half mile...cars all bunched
up...it’s always a fi ght! 1:30 pm this Sunday. Oh, and where oh where
was brother Kyle Busch in Atlanta...came in at 18.

World Watchwith Mike Woodard
If the economy is going to be stimulated, and if it is to become strong again...I can tell you where the stimulus money must be spent. If you stimulate an economy and people increase spending, but they have to spend the money to buy goods from China, India, Indonesia, Korean...you know the list, then our government has borrowed money from overseas to spend it back overseas…they get their money back and we still owe it to them. I call that “Fool’s Gold”. That ain’t real economic stimulus. The only way to regain America’s strength in the world is to invest all our stimulus dollars putting people to work creating manufacturing equipment for use here. Why? Because, soon...VERY SOON, foreign nations are going to tire of loaning us copious amounts of money, or selling us stuff for money that is inflating. They’ll soon think they’ll get 50 cents on the dollar when our inflation rate makes a dollar we owe them worth 50 cents! So, here’s the Woodard plan for rebuilding our economy. Our government stimulates equipment manufacturers here to build next generation manufacturing equipment which can ONLY be used in the United States. That’s right, it can’t be moved or sold overseas. This would force manufacturers to utilize the equipment here, and hire people to work building our necessary products: autos, trains, planes, food, clothes, electronics, computers, etc., in the United States. In the past, when ole FDR came up with TVA, or built the Hoover Damn, and did huge infrastructure projects, the industrial might of the country was strong. The only problem was our in-dustrial might had was...nobody was buying much. It was a n economic depression…but, the nation had a huge production machine sitting idle, waiting on demand. We were sort of like China is today in that regard. Back then, as soon as the economy came roaring back, the industrial machine cranked up again and BOOM, economic recovery. This time….where exactly is this new creation of wealth supposed to come from? We don’t make our own shoes, clothes, cars, electronics, and all sorts of other things. We import them all. Also, back in FDR’s time we had oil in Texas! We didn’t import it either. We import it too now. Today there is a HUGE lobby in Washington telling our congressmen and president (and on TV they tell us)…”The USA needs to be a “Free market”. I love the way they use the word “Free” as if the overseas markets aren’t manipulated up one side and down the other for their benefit over our economy and our country. It’s time for a different kind of economic stimulus. It’s not 1929 or 1932. Our nation is a “service” economy….that has proven unable to fly. We must become a production economy again or we’re going to simply delaying times getting even worse. Call it the “Woodard Stimulus Plan”. Build American made production equipment for use in the USA. We rebuilt the Japan and Germany after World War II, why can’t we rebuild America after the world whipped us in an economic war we lost?

Musings On FaithWith Tom Woodard
Find past and current Musings on Faith articles online at www.downyonderantiques.com
It has long been a particular burden of mine that so many among us, in child-hood, and often fl owing into adulthood, have not experienced the simple act of a hug from their parents, or received the greatest words of affi rmation, “I love you”, from those same parents. A study of history reveals that this was a common condition in ages past, right up through the fi rst half of the Twentieth Century, and I fi nd that it remains all too common even today. Why would a parent not hug a child and say “I love you” on a continual basis, thereby affi rming the child in who they are and of their own inherent self-worth? Generally it is because they, as children, also were not hugged and told that they were loved. It is thus passed on, in far too many families, from generation to generation. The reproach often given to hugging and expressing love for our children is that this is a recent phenomenon, and that it will make our children weak. It is a recent phenomenon for a great preponderance of our ancestors. However, as a student of history I have found countless examples to the contrary, even in “stiff upper lip” Victorian England, and in Victorian America. And I have found that those children who were given this love and affection were often great achievers, quite self-possessed, and very likely to become men and women who ‘gave back’ to their Country and community. All the emphasis on a strict and formal upbringing, bereft of warmth, expres-sions of love, and physical affection, were looked upon as somehow belonging to the Christian faith. I can recall how solemn and dour were the old ladies in my Church as a child! They thought that this was the proper aspect for a worshiper in God’s house! How at variance with the Scriptures, which teach us that, in all circumstances, we are to have joy, and rejoice in the Lord! Refl ecting on all of this over the past few days, it suddenly oc-curred to me that Jesus Christ Himself provides the Word and the example refuting this perverse idea of raising a child without hugs and heartfelt expressions of “I love you”. Two examples are suffi cient to refute attributing such coldness to a proper ‘Christian’ upbringing: The one that fi rst comes to mind is the story of the Prodigal Son, and in par-ticular the verse which says “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was fi lled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him (Luke 15:20, NIV).” And then the example which Jesus demonstrated in His own relationship with children: “Let the little children come to me (Luke 18:16a, NIV).” And do you not think that He sat them upon His lap, and hugged and kissed them? And remember, too, that one of the three people Jesus raised from the dead was a little girl, the daughter of Jairus (Luke 8:49-56)! Hug and kiss your children and grandchildren! Tell them you love them! Yours in Christ, Tom
The bass fi shing tournaments have been taking place for a few weeks now. Those who love this kind of competition are glad the cold days of winter are about gone. It’s an out-doorsmen’s version of March Madness. Each Saturday is another tournament where only one team will take home the number one spot, and the most cash. One of the things that I’ve never got comfortable with is the idea of “practice” when it comes to fi shing. It seems to me you’re either fi shing or not. Now I understand that when you practice for a fi shing tournament, you are releasing the fi sh where you catch them instead of bringing them into the weigh-in area. The idea is that they will be there during tournament time, when you come back. Sometimes they are and sometimes they’re not. In the early days, some fi shermen made sure that the fi sh were there when they came back. Let’s call this the steroid era. In fact, some of those same fi shermen loaded up those bass with lead sinkers to make them weigh more. It was all done before the mandatory lie detector test that each winner must now take before getting his money. It does make me chuckle when I think of the need for a lie detector machine in this, and only this, sport. Maybe we should make it mandatory in baseball as well. We could go as far back as Phil Neikro and ask him if he actually doctored the baseball with a fi ngernail fi le in order to throw his knuckleball. I digress. The truth is, when it comes to tournament bass fi shing, integrity is not assumed. It is tested. It doesn’t matter if you are a Supreme Court judge, or the Pope. If you win, you will stand before an independent individual and give a truthful account of each fi sh that you caught. This test will have no respect for one’s creed, color, or credentials, and the results will be fi nal. There’s also coming a day when another test will be given. The results will have a far greater implication than money. It will determine one’s eternity. The Judge will be none other than God himself, and He and His test will be fair. It will comprise of only one question; what did you do with my Son Jesus, who is the Christ. All of our works will mean nothing unless they were done as a result of our relationship with Him. The great thing about this test is that God wants all of us to pass. All we must do is confess that we are lost without Jesus, believe that He is the Son of God that died for our sins, and receive Him into our hearts and lives. When we do that, with a sincere heart, our reward is not only a future home in heaven, but a fruitful life here and now. I’d love to hear from you if you have just prayed that prayer.
