Our Vision and Mission Statement guides our pastoral planning...
Established in 1922, the parish family of St. John
the Baptist Church welcomes and invites all
people to our community, especially those in
need. Guided by the Holy Spirit we are sustained by the Sunday
Eucharist, the Word of God, and the Sacraments. All are
encouraged to share their time, talent and treasure as we grow in
love through our Catholic faith and the life, death and resurrection
of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Understanding
the Mass
2.
Entrance Hymn
As Mass begins, everyone stands to sing a song. The General Instruction of the Roman
Missal calls this the entrance chant (47). Its purpose is “to open the celebration, foster the
unity of those who have been gathered, introduce their thoughts to the mystery of the liturgical
time or festivity, and accompany the procession of the Priest and ministers.”
The celebration of the Mass relies on the participation of the assembly. So, when the
first song is announced, this means you! Pick up the songbook and sing! Sadly, some people
do not. If you choose not to sing the entrance chant, you fail to open the celebration, you
frustrate the unity of those assembled, you postpone thinking about the mystery we have
gathered to celebrate, and you dissociate yourself from the procession. Surely, no one intends
to do all this, but that is the way it looks. To those who are singing, non-singers feel like dead
weight. Even if you sing poorly, weakly, too loudly, or too softly, pick up the hymnal and sing!
You will praise God and serve the faith of those around you.
Each Sunday of the year comes with its own suggested text for the entrance chant. But
another psalm or liturgical song may be used. The church calls this music a “chant”, but it
means any spiritual song or hymn. All may sing together, the cantor or choir may alternate
with the people, or the choir may occasionally sing it alone.
If there is no entrance song, the suggested text is recited by the assembly, the lector or
even by the priest himself, who may comment on it briefly to open the celebration (48).

To parents of young children:
May we suggest….RELAX! God put the wiggle in children.
Don’t feel you have to suppress it in God’s house. All are welcome!
Sit towards the front where it is easier for your little ones to see and hear what is
going on at the altar. They tire of seeing the backs of others!
Quietly explain the parts of the Mass and actions
of the priest, choir, and other ministries. Help them find the hymns and prayers in the hymnals and booklets.
Sing the hymns, participate in the liturgy and pray. Children learn about worship and liturgical behavior by copying you.
If you have to leave Mass with your child, feel free to do so, but please come back.
As Jesus said, “Let the children come to me…”
Remember that the way we welcome children in church directly affects the way they respond to the church, to God and to one another.
Let them know that they are at home in his house of worship.
To the members of our parish: The presence of children is a gift to the church
and a reminder that our parish is growing. Please welcome our children and give a smile of encouragement to their parents.

our parish family! The fruitful ministries at our parish are examples of how
many of you have answered, and continue to answer, that
call. To ensure such work can continue requires not only
gifts of time, but also of financial help. I ask you to prayer-
fully consider supporting our parish with electronic dona-
tions through Faith Direct. You can find paper enrollment
forms in the parish office, or you can sign up online at
