FEBRUARY 2017 - TRESTLEBOARD

From the Worshipful Master Brethren, January has been interesting to say the least. We had to cancel our stated meeting because of nasty winter weather. After a few phone calls; it appeared that we would not have even had a quorum to open. We tried to have a called communication on Wednesday January 11th. This time the weather and the building conspired against us and we had pipes burst in the sub-basement of the lodge building which affected our water, power and heat for a few days. Jeremy Vaughn was instrumental in taking care of the water problems at the Lodge building. He was contacted and took the necessary time to serve the lodge to contact people to do cleanup and to handle the power, heat and water problems and we need to thank him for that. That called communication got cancelled as did a few meetings for the concordant bodies. Some people were able to find other venues to use for their meetings. I have since decided that we will put off our January business until the February stated meeting on the 1st of February at 7:30 P.M. Dinner will be at the Twin Falls Sandwich Company. The Lodge will not be picking up the tab on this dinner. We hope to see you there. The fellowship is always good. The concordant bodies meeting went very well. The venue was moved to Parkes Funeral Chapel as the water was still off at the lodge. It was well attended and all groups were represented. I want to thank everyone who was there, and Brother Mike Parkes and his lady

Catherine for being great hosts and letting us use their building. I thank Brother Jeremy Vaughn for all the work he put into his presentation. It was organized and well received. The month of February should treat us better. Our stated meeting of course is on the 1st of February and I hope to see everyone there. We also need to do some degree work in February in the FC and MM degrees so be thinking of which parts you would like to perform. I would like to get the lodge busy and doing the necessary work that we do so well. Please attend as much as possible, we need everyone’s help to get these things done. I would like to invite anyone interested in helping with or joining DeMolay to an organization meeting on February 21st at the lodge building conference room at 7:00 P.M. Food and drinks will be provided. Please call Don Charbonneau at 358-7071 to rsvp before February 19th so I know how much food to purchase. I wish you all peace, harmony, and brotherly love in the days ahead. Fraternally, Don Charbonneau, PM

Greetings Brethren from the West, Masonic order used for the swearing in of U.S. Presidents

For the sixth time in history, a pre-revolutionary Bible owned by the Masonic order was to be used for the swearing in of a U.S. president. George W. Bush had intended to take the oath of office as the na-tion's 43rd president on the historic Masonic bible. George Washington was the first, in 1789. The last was George H.W. Bush, who used the Bible in 1989. On Friday, 19 January 2001, three officials of the Manhattan-based St. John's Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons boarded an Amtrak liner for Washington, D.C., carrying the nine-pound, 234-year-old King James Bible in a special container. At Union Station, they were met by inaugural committee officials and escorted to the inaugural site. They were literally waiting in the wings in a room adjacent to the inauguration platform when, at the 12th hour, a decision was made (attributed to the Vice President, but not confirmed) not to jeopardize the Bible because of the rain then pelting the area. Bound in London in 1767, the Bible was brought to the colonies and given by Jonathan Hampton to the St. John's Lodge in lower Manhattan three years later when he became its grand master. Just before Washington was to take his oath of office on the steps of Federal Hall in New York City on April 30, 1789, it was discovered that there was no Bible on hand. The then-New York Gov. Robert Livingston, a Masonic grand master, borrowed the lodge's bible from St. John's Masonic Lodge, which had meeting rooms just a short distance away. A statue of Washington marks the site in front of the present-day Federal Hall on Wall Street. No printer in the colonies produced Bibles at the time, and the London import, bound in maroon Moroccan leather with silver hasps, was ''probably close to a year's wages for the average fellow.'' Despite its age and history, the lodge today puts no monetary value on the book. ''I guess the word is priceless,'' a representative said. Other presidents who have placed their left hand on the Masonic Bible were Warren G. Harding in 1921, Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1953, and Jimmy Carter in 1977. Among the six, only Washington and Harding were Masons.Harry Truman, probably the most active Mason among the nation's chief executives, did not use it, nor did several other Masons who served as president. In 1867, President Andrew Johnson, attending the dedication of a new Masonic temple in Boston, asked that the George Washington inaugural Bible be brought to his hotel room, and was seen by aides ''to weep as he held it in his hands". In addition to its role in presidential oath-taking, the Bible was used at Washington's funeral in December, 1799, the dedication of the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C. in 1885, the re-laying of the U.S. Capitol's cornerstone in 1959, and the christening of the aircraft carrier USS George Washington at Norfolk, Va., in 1992. It was on display at the New York world's fair in 1964-65 and at the White House for 30 days after the elder Bush's inaugural. Between travels, it is maintained by the National Parks Service in a protective display case at Federal Hall, open to Genesis 49, 50, the pages on which Wash-ington rested his hand to be sworn in. As always I look forward to seeing you in lodge.

Hello from Bethel 43! Hello from Bethel 43! Huge THANK YOU for all whom attended the installation of Officers January 7th! Weather was against us as many of our friends could not attend. However, we had a small and simply wonderful and lovely ceremony as Macy Jones was installed as our Spring Term Honored Queen! We will be cleaning and organizing our “stuff” as we prepare for the sale of the Ballroom. Please check the facebook posts for items that will need a new home. We realize that some items are sentimental and have meaning to many past jobies and want to make sure we are frugal but also respectful. May you stay warm and safe this winter season! Jobie Love, Taenia Hudson Bethel Guardian Bethel 43

News From Bethel 56 Happy Valentine’s Day!!!!! Well, it might be a bit early, but it is coming….! February sees a new set of officers taking over. Our new Honored Queen has many exciting things planned for the spring term. There will be fun things for each meeting and some major events to

come, so stayed tuned. Please join us for their first meeting as a new corps of officers on February 2nd . I want to make sure and let our outgoing HQ Cheyenne know she did an amazing job. She had lots of fun activities for the girls and she conducted a lot of complicated business during the meetings. Thanks for such a wonderful term and your diligent work. If you would like information about Job’s Daughter or to visit our

meetings feel free to contact me, Robin Mason, Bethel Guardian at 421-2258 or Brian Clayton, Associate Bethel Guardian at 420-5445. As always thanks so much for your support of these girls, they really appreciate and so does the council.

Hello from Magic Valley # 13LT. The Rainbow Girls have been off and running with all kinds of activities. We had a Christmas party with lots of games, food and a small gift exchange. We just finished our first fundraiser of selling Butter Braids. The girls have also been working hard for the Humane Society Animal shelter in Twin Falls. It’s not hard to convince these girls to spend time playing with dogs and cats. Last week, when the Ballroom was flooded, instead of a meeting we had a fun night and craft night. Besides games, the girls made tie blankets for the Grand service project, Hilarity for

Charity, which provides relief and blankets to Alzheimer care facilities. The blankets the girls made will stay right here in Twin Falls. We also had sev-eral prospective members at the event so it was a huge success. We are happy to announce that we have received one new petition for membership which will give us the needed 12 members for constitution of our assembly. Yeah! We have another girl who is seriously considering joining so we hope to get her petition too. We would love to work with all of the other Masonic organizations so if there are any dinners or projects you need help with, please feel free to contact us. You can call Terese Gutierrez, Mother Advisor, at 702-683-8548. The mailing address for our assembly is Magic Valley Assembly, P.O. Box 504, Kimberly, ID 83341.

TWIN FALLS CHAPTER #29, OES Dear Sisters and Brothers: Due to the inclement weather, we have been kept apart and unable to meet as we would like to. I have missed you all! Now with the issues that have impacted the building, we are nomads and yet we move freely with the spirit of our Star to guide us. I still would like to focus on our New Year and that we are looking at some challenges in the coming year. The Ballroom has been formally listed and has a viable sale in the process of going through. As such, it is with great anticipation that we look forward to moving into new facilities… However due to confidentiality, these new facilities and options are still fairly hush hush. We, are assured by our Masonic Leadership that we have full use of the building until June, however there will be no catering facilities and furniture and other items are being sold, so they may not be available to us for our Youth Information Night, Our Friendship Night or Installation. We will need to have some serious discussion at our next meeting as to what avenues that we need to take to facilitate these events. I will require everyone’s input. Also with the loss of catering, we have lost the cleaning staff and so we will need to discuss care and keeping of our meeting room, dining area and the bathrooms. Also if we utilize the kitchen area and accumulate trash, it will be our organization’s responsibility to care for this and make sure that it is properly disposed of. Our first meeting in February will be geared toward Valentine’s Day, and then our second meeting will be Youth Informational Night. This is where our young people and outsiders can learn about our purpose and ask about joining Chapter. I really would like all of you to come and support our Star in this way. We will discuss more in our Chapter meetings. We will be talking about our upcoming Friendship Night (MARCH 28) which has a Dr. Seuss Theme and we will begin making plans to invite the other Chapters to join us for the fun. We will need to have the invitations out by the middle

of February so that there will be plenty of time for them to plan to join us. We are also beginning to think forward to GRAND CHAPTER obligations-- we are being asked to provide two different baskets for the basket auction this year ... Themes are "The Niagara Falls of the West (Shoshone Falls)" and "All Things Blue" So please be thinking of items to donate for the Chapter Baskets! Thanks! Collection will begin in February and continue through to June… As always if you know someone that wants to come to chapter but needs a ride, or if you are the person that wants to come to chapter and needs a ride, please do not hesitate to get in contact with me. I will arrange everything. Your brothers and sisters miss you and we need your attendance and support. We are moving forward into 2017 and have many challenges, but I really am looking forward to seeing the potential new life that will be coming to Eastern Star and with your help, I know that we will sustain and prosper. Star Love, Catherine E. Parke, Worthy Matron
