relevanceandlegacytodayGracehasbeenaLecturerintheSchoolofNursingatManukauInstituteofTechnologysince1982.ShehasbeenaRegisteredGeneralandObstetricNursesince1960andholdsacurrentPractisingCertificatewiththeNursingCouncilofNewZealand.
Bornin1938,Gracespentherfirst18yearslivingonGreatBarrierIslandinMedlandsBaywherehergrandparentssettledinthe1860s.GracedreamedonlyofacareerasanurseandlefttheIslandin1956tostarthernursingtrainingwiththeAucklandSchoolofNursing.
Havingapassionforthehistoryofnursing,Gracebecameinterestedinthe‘FounderofModernNursing’FlorenceNightingale(1820-1910).In2010GracewentonapilgrimagetothehomesandplaceswhereNightingalelivedandworked,includingherbirthplaceinFlorenceandtheoldBarrackHospitalatScutari,Istanbul.
Gracewillbespeakingofherpersonalexperiencesofnursinginherlifetime,theinfluenceofhergrandmothersigningtheWomen’sSuffragepetitionin1893,seeingtheruralnursearriveonhorsebackinherearlyyears,andhowFlorenceNightingalehascontinuedtoinspireherpassionfornursingtothisday.
In2017GracereceivedrecognitionforhercontributiontoNursingbygainingTheKiwibankLocalHeroAwardandalsoaCertificateofAchievementasaSemi-finalistMetlifecareSeniorNewZealanderoftheYear.

FROMTHEPRESIDENTInAprilwehadasurprisingsetofspeakers.TheMiniSpeakerwasourownMartynGearywhotookusdowntheevolutionpath.Itwasanexcitingjourneyandtheaudiencelearntalot.OurmainspeakerwasMikeMaranafellowU3Amemberfromacrosstown.HeintroducedustoGraphology.Althoughthisisconsideredapseudoscienceheprovidedplentyoflaughtertoourmembersashedecipheredhandwriting.It’salongtimesincetheWednesdaymeetingwaslaughingsomuch.Allinallanothergreatsetofspeakerswherewelearntsomethingandhadagoodlaugh.OnamoreseriousnotewestillneedcommitteemembersforAugustAGM.IwillkeeponaboutthisrightuptotheAGMsoyouhadbettercomeupwithsomenames.Ifyoucannotvolunteeryourselfhowaboutaskingothermembers.IfeveryoneaskedtwopeopleeachmonthfromnowuptoJulyIamsurewewouldhaveasurfeitofcommitteemembersnominatedandwecouldhaveanelection.Wowthatwouldbeagreatevent.RonWilsonPresident
Holly(Gladys)MortonAnotefromHolly’sdaughter,HelenWakefield.MymotherHolly(Gladys)MortonwhowasapastpresidentofU3A(1997-1999)passedawayon1Aprilafteralongillness.WehadabeautifulfamilyserviceforheronFriday,5April.U3Awassuchahugepartofherlifeformanyyearsanditwasajoytohertohavetheopportunitytocontinue her lifelong love of education and meet so many wonderful people. She was especially delighted to be honoured with life membership of U3A in 2015.
KingDick'SeddonbecomesPremier:1May1893RichardJohnSeddonbecamepremierfollowingthedeathofJohnBallance.Immortalisedas‘KingDick’,SeddondominatedtheNewZealandpoliticallandscapeforthenext13years.Heremainsthiscountry’slongest-servingprimeminister.SeddonwasfirstelectedtoParliamentin1879forHokitika,andlaterrepresentedtheWestlandseat.IntheHouse,hewasnotoriouslylong-windedandridiculedasboorish.Buttheastutepoliticianturnedhisapparentlackofsophisticationtohisadvantage,presentinghimselfasamanofthepeople
