It gives me great pleasure to introduce the second
edition of the UHOA Uganda Hotel Guide.
The fi rst edition, published in November 2008, provided
a showcase for our members and clearly illustrated the
sheer breadth and variety of accommodation available in
Uganda, from the grandest fi ve-star property in Kampala
to the humblest rural guesthouse.
Over the time since that fi rst edition was published, a
number of new hotels, lodges and guesthouses have
opened throughout the country, but especially in Kampala.
Other properties are under construction for completion in
2010. All of these new developments have boosted our
overall bed capacity and provided further choices
for visitors.
Meanwhile, our tourism sector is still expanding, while the
number of foreign visitors arriving in Uganda to attend
conferences and seminars has continued to grow. Uganda
now offers a particularly attractive product in the interna-
tional and regional conference market. Furthermore, the
local market for such meetings – many of which are NGO-
funded – remains important for all who are involved in the
hotel industry.
Our 10 national parks still need to become better know;
for the time being they remain one of Africa’s best-kept
secrets. Taken together, these 10 parks provide some of
the best wildlife viewing and bird watching anywhere in
the region.
I strongly urge anyone contemplating a visit to Africa to
consider Uganda – a largely undiscovered destination. I am
certain you will not be disappointed and, what is more,
you will fi nd a warm Ugandan welcome on your arrival.

MORE REASONS THAN EVER TO DISCOVER THE WONDERS OF UGANDA
FOREWORD 3FOREWORD
INTRODUCTION
The recent transformation of Kampala, from a city
where quality accommodation was at a premium
to one that it is now dotted with smart new hotels,
has been nothing short of miraculous.
The catalyst for this huge increase in hotel room capacity
was the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting
(CHOGM) in Kampala in 2007 which set off a wave of
construction in and around the nation’s capital. Before
then, Kampala had been signifi cantly under-supplied with
international class hotels.
No matter how attractive the CHOGM gathering was in
terms of its impact on hotel building, the fact is that the
meeting lasted just three days – and hotels have to fi ll
their rooms every day of the year. Over-optimism about
projected visitor numbers has subsequently had an impact
on the hotel sector, especially in Kampala.
Today, hotel building and refurbishment is seen as an
investment in the future – a recognition of the ‘chicken
and egg’ situation whereby tourists and international
conference organisers will not come to Uganda unless
there is somewhere for them to stay,
Yet despite uncertainty over the balance between
supply and demand, Uganda’s hotel building mini-boom
continued throughout 2009 with several new properties
coming on stream or getting under way. Some others have
been shelved.
NEW PROJECT
The biggest new project is the Hilton Kampala Hotel,
with 272 rooms including 37 suites, which is scheduled
for completion in 2010. This fi ve-star property is set in
14 acres on Nakasero Hill and is being developed by the
US$100 million Aya Group.
The Hilton will operate in the same market sector as the
Kampala Serena – currently Kampala’s most expensive
property in terms of rack rates – and other top-end estab-
lishments such as the Sheraton Kampala and maybe even
the delightfully intimate Emin Pasha Hotel.
Entebbe, too, has its fair share of new properties, catering
mostly for ‘overnighters’ arriving late from or leaving early
for the nearby international airport. Many of these are
small, family run hotels and guesthouses. Restoration of
the venerable Windsor Lake Victoria Hotel has pushed

4
the lakeside town upmarket. The 100-room property, set
in nine acres, has been renamed the Laico Lake Victoria
Entebbe Hotel by its Libyan owners, Laico Hotels & Resorts
Management Company.
TARGETED
There are even plans by a South African chain for a new
property in Entebbe. If built, this hotel will be targeted
largely at airline crews and those involved in Uganda’s
fl edgling oil exploration industry. Until recently, Entebbe
had been dominated by two properties owned by the
Imperial Hotels Group.
The Lake Victoria Serena Resort, opened in October, is
perhaps the fi rst such property of its kind in Uganda.
Previously, the Ranch on the Lake – since demolished
– the new resort is located just off the Kampala-Entebbe
highway and enjoys commanding views over Lake Victoria.
It provides a resort-style experience, away from it all, yet
within easy drive of the capital.
In Jinja, the renovated colonial guesthouse Gately on Nile,
reopened in 2000, has grown from four to 21 rooms. This
property has revived a long-lost level of elegance and style
as the town strives to regain the cosmopolitan atmosphere
it enjoyed in days gone by. At the same time, the recently
expanded Jinja Nile Resort continues to lead the way in the
conference and seminar sector outside of Kampala.
In contrast to the heady pace of property building else-
where, activity in and around Uganda’s principal game
parks has been more restrained, with only a small number
of new developments. Those that have opened have been
mainly in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and in
Fort Portal, gateway to the snow-capped Rwenzoris, the
third-highest peaks in Africa.
EXCLUSIVE
One issue holding back camp and lodge development
within some parks is the fact that existing operators enjoy
exclusive rights. Clearly, these could be justifi ed in the past
in order to encourage investors to build lodges in parks
which had comparatively few visitors.
But as the number of tourists has increased, these rights
are regarded by some as a restraint on bed capacity. There
is now a balance to strike between the rights of pioneering
operators and those who wish to follow.
One thing is certain: anyone who had trouble fi nding a
hotel room in Kampala – or even elsewhere in Uganda –
just a few years back is now in the lucky position of being
spoiled for choice. Today, Uganda can offer something to
suit all tastes and all price ranges, from the grand Kampala
Serena Hotel to modest rural guesthouses. Whatever type
of accommodation the visitors choose, they can be sure of
a warm Ugandan welcome.
5
Uganda is sometimes overlooked by those
considering a wildlife viewing trip to Africa –
especially fi rst-time visitors. Yet Uganda offers 10
highly varied national parks, some of which contain
animal species rarely found elsewhere in Africa.
Furthermore, Uganda is one of the world’s premier
birding destinations.
Of course, there are creatures such as lion and elephant;
but Uganda somehow seems to offer a more subtle
viewing experience – one, perhaps, for the cognoscenti.
Its wide variety of game, its sometimes diffi cult-to-reach
primates and its rare antelope are coupled with some of
the most exhilarating hill walking anywhere in Africa.
SAVANNAH
To start with, Uganda’s two main areas of open savannah
– the 3,840 sq km Murchison Falls National Park, which is
the nation’s largest, and the 1,978 sq km Queen Elizabeth
National Park – provide an opportunity to view Africa’s
wildlife in a less crowded environment than those found in
some other parts of East Africa.
In addition to these two parks, Uganda is surprisingly well
blessed in terms of the variety of its national parks, all of
which have now largely recovered from the widespread
poaching of the 1980s and 1990s. These are:
• The little visited but spectacular 1,442 sq km Kidepo
Valley National Park, close to the borders of Kenya and
Sudan and over 700 km from Kampala. The park has only
limited accommodation in the form of self-catering bandas
and chalets, so visitors are advised to bring their own food
and supplies. It has a surprisingly wide range of animal and
bird species and is certainly worth the effort to get there.
• The 1,145 sq km Mount Elgon National Park straddles
the Uganda-Kenya border and includes the 4,321 metre
SPECIAL CL ASS OF WILDLIFE V IEWING MAKES THE TR IP WELL WORTHWHILE
NATIONAL PARKS6
Mount Elgon, an extinct volcano. The park is especially
popular with hikers. There are some small antelope and a
wide variety of bird species.
• The 776 sq km Kibale National Park is home to no
fewer than 13 species of primate and is famed for its
habituated chimpanzees.
• The 220 sq km Semliki National Park is located in the
remote west of Uganda on the border with the Democratic
Republic of Congo. Considered the only real jungle in East Africa,
it offers great scenery and opportunities for primate viewing.
• The 998 sq km Rwenzori Mountains National Park
contains the legendary Mountains of the Moon and
Africa’s third-highest mountain. Excellent for hill walking
and climbing.
• The 260 sq km Lake Mburo National Park contains fi ve
lakes and is the best place in Uganda to view the eland.
Uganda is, of course, famed for its rare mountain gorilla
population; but the fragility of this endangered creature
means that only a very
few tourists can obtain
a trekking permit for
the two national parks
where the primate is
located.
HABITUATED
There are just fi ve habituated gorilla groups: four in Bwindi
Impenetrable National Park, which has 11 species of
primate in all, and one in the tiny 33.7 sq km Mgahinga
Gorilla National Park. Each day 32 gorilla trekking permits
are issued. These are divided into parties of eight, with
three groups going to Bwindi and one to Mgahinga. These
permits cost US$500 per person per day and must be
booked well in advance.
Compared with neighbouring Rwanda, viewing gorillas in
Uganda is more diffi cult and requires greater human effort
to reach either Bwindi or Mgahinga. But many believe this
makes it all the more satisfying as an experience. Much the
same can be said about Uganda’s other national parks: it’s
worth it when you get there.
7
For golfi ng addicts, Uganda offers some fi ne golf
courses, even though the nation lost some of its
courses during a turbulent spell in its recent history.
Undoubtedly, the best of these is the 18-hole Uganda Golf
Club. Set right in the centre of Kampala, it is the country’s
most popular course, where many of the nation’s best
connected people spend their weekends. The course is a
fair test for mid to high handicap players, with many tricky
blind shots on account of the encroaching trees.
Alternatively, enthusiasts can play on the other main 18-hole
course, the Entebbe Club. This course dates from 1905, when
it was just nine holes, and has the distinction of being the
oldest golf course in East Africa. Originally, club membership
was all-male and was restricted to British subjects, although
foreigners and visitors could be admitted as honorary
members. Now, everyone is welcome, green fees are surpris-
ingly inexpensive and, with just 150 full members, it is always
easy to obtain a tee time, even on a Saturday.
The 6,441-yard course is laid out in open parkland. The
clubhouse, which is the original Edwardian building, offers
a fi ne example of colonial architecture.
CHARMING
Jinja is blessed with a charming nine-hole course in a
picturesque setting that sees little action midweek, so
visitors can expect to play without delay. Playing the nine
holes twice from different tees, the par-72 course is 6,481
yards. The course is in reasonable condition.
What is destined to transform golf in Uganda, however,
is the construction of a new 7,350-yard, par-72 course at
the Lake Victoria Serena Resort. Opened in late 2009, this
property is situated between Entebbe and Kampala. As its
name suggests, the resort overlooks Lake Victoria and will
certainly make a stunning location for a golf course.
There are golf courses, too, in Fort Portal (the Toro Club),
Tororo, Arua, Mbarara, Masindi, Kabale and Kasese.
