Presentation Media for EU Offices
The information office of the European Parliament and the European Commission Representation serve as a link between the
EU institutions and the people and institutions in Austria. The aim is to maintain the flow of information in both directions: the
Austrians are kept fully informed about all current EU topics, while the various authorities in Brussels are made aware of specific
Austrian viewpoints and concerns.

Facilities include flexible and versatile audio and video equipment in the conference room
that is suitable for a wide variety of events. The conference room itself has seating for
around 150 people and can be enlarged by opening a sliding partition that connects it
with the foyer.
The audio system consists of several individual components that combine to form a
complete system. Besides the sound system, for example, a wireless conference system
is available, as are wireless microphones and a mobile audio system for hearing-impaired
participants. The sound system provides audio to both the conference room and the fo-
yer.
The video equipment offers a wide range of functions for video projection, presentations
from laptops and the recording of conferences, discussions etc. If the conference room is
turned into a large auditorium by extending it into the foyer, the video signal can also be
transmitted onto the screens in the foyer.
Mobile Touchpanel to control the AV system remote-controlled HD ceiling camera
For recording events, three ceiling cameras
are available. These are permanently moun-
ted, can be operated remotely and provide
high definition pictures. The signal from
the cameras can be processed by a video
mixer and transferred to the screens and
video projection and can also be recorded
on DVD. In addition, the video signal from
an event or presentation can also be fed
into the in-house TV network.
The AV system is controlled via a mobile
touch panel. The acoustics are controlled
using an audio mixing desk which is in-
stalled on a mobile media trolley along
with the video mixer, preview monitors
and camera controls.

90 Years of the Salzburg Festival
Project: Art direction and implementation of the exhibition at the Salzburg Museum
In 2010 the Salzburg Festival celebrates its 90th anni-
versary. The Salzburg Festival was born on 22 August
1920 when Hugo von Hofmannsthal‘s morality play Je-
dermann was premiered on Domplatz under the direc-
tion of Max Reinhardt. The Salzburg Festival has since
become the foremost festival encompassing the three
genres of opera, theatre and concerts.
The main exhibition in Salzburg Museum (Kunsthalle)
offers an insight into the inner workings of the world-
famous venue. The journey begins with a look at the
Exhibition „90 Years of the Salzburg Festiva“
idea behind the Festival‘s inception and follows its historical deve-
lopment and establishment before continuing right into its heart and
culminating in the central installation that is the „world stage“ - a styli-
sed stage upon which various multimedia events are played out.
From 17 July to 26 October 2010 the exhibition „The Great World Theater. 90 Years of the Salzburg Festival“ will be staged in the Kunsthalle of Salzburg Museum in co-operation with the Salzburg Festival and checkpointmedia AG.

Daniel Libeskind and Massimiliano Fuksas.
The Guggenheim Foundation and the St.

The history of a country as the history of a building
as revealed in the Palais Epstein
Media station “Family Epstein”
During its 130 year history the Palais Epstein has been used for more than a dozen
different purposes: as the Epstein family residence and business premises; as the offices
of a British gas company; as an office building housing the Higher Administrative Court,
Vienna‘s school authorities and, under the Nazi regime, the construction department
for buildings of the Reich governor‘s office; as the Soviet city command; as part of the
Academy for Music and Fine Arts; it then housed Vienna‘s school authorities again, and
has now been adapted for parliamentary purposes.
Twelve information pillars in the entrance hall introduce visitors to a number of points
of interest.
They can then select texts, images, diagrams, animations and short video clips on
five media stations, featuring, for the first time, portrait format 30-inch screens. One
animation shows “Owners and use of Ringstrasse buildings in 1914”, while
another offers an overview of the inhabitants of the housing block “Palais Epstein” in
the last century.
A special station on the Epstein family was developed with a family tree interface and
a family tree animation; the Jewish family‘s social circle is examined and portrayed by
means of an extensive address book.
The palace as a residence and a bank: a front elevation reveals the interior and provides
information on the individual rooms, their uses and their occupants.
The exhibition also includes artefacts from the building‘s long history, which are
displayed in specially created glass cases, and original pictures and items of furniture.

Mozarthaus Vienna
Domgasse No. 5, in Vienna‘s 1st District: on January 27, 2006 (the 250th anniversary of Mozart‘s birth) the completely refurbished building, which contains Mozart’s only surviving Viennese residence, opened its doors as the „Mozarthaus Vienna“, a tribute to the life and work of the musical genius on some 1,000 m² of floor space and three floors. A multimedia presentation gives visitors the chance to understand Mozart‘s enigmatic character better, to learn more about his friends and enemies in the Vienna of the late baroque period, and to enjoy the most famous melodies from his extensive repertoire side by side.
checkpointmedia is responsible for the design and
realization of all the exhibition’s media stations and
films in the basement, in the courtyard and on the
second and third floors. The exhibition’s themes were
conceived by Joachim Riedl, its architecture is by
Gustav Pichelmann.
The audiovisual installations in the Mozarthaus were
inspired by the media technology and “Worlds of
Wonders” of Mozart’s time: then, decades before the
invention of photography and film, optical experiments
and illusions, automatons and mechanical tricks were
becoming fashionable and causing the people of the
time to gasp in astonishment.

A video installation on the theme of “Figaro” combines the principle of old-fashioned
puzzle blocks with modern aesthetics and video technology.
The tour culminates in the multimedia tribute to “The Magic Flute”: a stage landscape
consisting of sets, projections and lighting effects shows an abridged version of
“The Magic Flute” as a “virtual mirrored opera” from 1791 to the present day. Film excerpts
of legendary productions of the opera are projected onto the partly real, party virtual
stage landscape using reflections. Papageno, the audience’s darling down the centuries,
moves through time and space as a projection and presents the most important arias

In 1999, after a refurbishment lasting seven years, Vienna‘s Technical Museum reopened with five newly designed exhibition areas for which 100 different media stations were developed.
It was this project that sparked the foundation of
checkpointmedia – the company‘s founder members

This was a major project with complex technical
requirements that needed ingenious and versatile
solutions to bring the subject matter to life – and these
solutions proved to be prototypical of their method of
working, which was not only unobtrusive and thorough
but also designed to leave a lasting impression.

produced texts for five sectors (heavy

transferred to data bases where designers,
picture, sound and video librarians,
animators and programmers transformed
them into multimedia scripts with
precisely defined amounts of text and lists of headlines, instructions for photo, sound
and video including indications of copyright ownership, draft animations, links etc.
Before that could happen, new photographs were taken of large parts of the collection,
animations were conceived, atmospheric sound environments composed and audio
features recorded.
At the same time the presentation tools, i.e. the hardware, were developed and tested:

space between the pillars appears to be open; viewed
from the other, it looks closed. If you go up close to the
pillars, radio stations from all over the world become
audible – but in the middle, all that can be heard is a
blend of all the radio stations in an arrangement by the
artists that plays 24 hours a day.
Recently, local people have been given the chance to
become “temporary” artists and influence the acoustic
event by suggesting their own stations.

The entire surface of the Mayday Bar,

screen which invites the guest to interact
with the animations playing on it:
aeroplanes of the Flying Bulls troupe hover

ashtrays; in the second setting, a
comic-style New York, comical waiters
interact with cocktail glasses and mobile phones. But there is also the possibility to
communicate with other guests at the bar, using the virtual communicator installed in
the bar in homage to the legendary table phones.
What makes this amazing installation possible is the creative use of technology: 38 PCs
in 18 modules with one projector each use infrared recognition to pick up what is hap-
pening at the bar; the object data is registered by the computer and initiates the corre-
sponding reaction.

Carolino Augusteum Museum, Salzburg
With the aid of the famous panoramic painting of Salzburg and the surrounding area from 1825 and the flat-screen monitor installation “Time/Reading Glass” it recently became possible to switch back and forth between the year 1825 and the present day in the Carolino Augusteum Museum, Salzburg.
The screen can be moved in front of any part of a
reproduction of the huge painting (the original is nearly
5 metres high and 26 metres around and has a surface
area of 125 m²) and the corresponding detail of
Salzburg as it is today appears for comparison. There
is also a switch that can be used to receive detailed
information on the city‘s development since that
time. Original sounds of the life in the city enrich and
complete this innovative addition to a valuable work of

175 Years of Bertelsmann as an Interactive Experience
Today marks the 175th birthday of Bertelsmann, a media
concern with a rich tradition. Under the motto “175 years of
Bertelsmann - the legacy for our future” the company is cele-
brating with a gala and a new multimedia history that can be
explored at www.bertelsmann.de/175. This commemorative
site features a whole host of texts, images, sound and film do-
cuments from the extensive Bertelsmann company archives,
some of which have never been published before.
The introduction to the story takes the form of a floating cube
that can be turned at will. Each of the cube’s sides represents
one era of the company’s history. The virtual journey down
through the years takes place along a time bar that contains
milestones in the international concern’s development. Users
can travel through time at will and have the chance at many
stages of the journey to contribute their own personal memo-
ries, experiences and impressions and share them with other
users.
checkpointmedia came up with the idea of the cube as a symbol of
the many facets of the company and to show the six eras. The cube
floats suspended in space so that it can be turned in any direction and
used as a navigation instrument as well. Movement and interaction
also play an important role in the time bar.
As well as the concept, checkpointmedia also created the pictorial
presentation of the interactive history and, besides the time bar, de-
veloped an additional level where facts and personal memories meet.
Interesting details are presented on the folded down base of a cube,
supported by a wealth of multimedia features and quiz questions on
Bertelsmann.
All these features and possibilities to select and navigate combine to
make a user-friendly and vivid journey through the 175 years of the
company’s history.
