Color Mappingis just a fancy way for shufflingcolors around. For example, to map color A to color
B simply means to take all A-colored pixels andconvert them to B-colored pixels.
Photoshop provides several commands that enableyou to map entire ranges of colors based on their
hues, saturation, levels, and most frequently, brightness values.

A color mode determines the color model used todisplay and print images. Photoshop bases its color
modes on established models for describing andreproducing color. Common models include HSB(hue, saturation, brightness); RGB (red, green, blue);CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black); and CIE
L*a*b*.

Hueis the color reflected from or transmitted
through an object. It is measured as a location on the
standard color wheel, expressed as a degree between0 and 360. In common use, hue is identified by thename of the color such as red, orange, or green.
Saturation, sometimes called chroma, is the strengthor purity of the color. Saturation represents the
amount of gray in proportion to the hue, measuredas a percentage from 0% (gray) to 100% (fullysaturated). On the standard color wheel, saturationincreases from the center to the edge.

Brightnessis the relative lightness or darkness of thecolor, usually measured as a percentage from 0%
(black) to 100% (white).Contrast is defined as the separation between the
darkest and brightest areas of the image. Increasecontrast and you increase the separation between
dark and bright, making shadows darker andhighlights brighter. Decrease contrast and you bringthe shadows up and the highlights down to makethem closer to one another.

Choose the Foreground and Background Colors
In Photoshop the background color is black, bydefault, to paint, fill and apply border to a selection. The background color is white, by default, to makegradient fills and fill in areas of an image that have
been erased. The foreground and background colorsmay be changed using the Color palette, the Swatchespalette, the Color Picker, or the Eyedropper Tool

Simply put, the Dodge tool lightens the pixels you paint, and
the Burntool darkens the pixels you paint. Its not entirelydifferent from using Levels or Curves. Sponge tool saturates or
desaturates the pixels where you paint. The difference is that you are not applying the changes to the
entire image; youre applying them only to the places you paintwith the brushes. Think of it as a way of selectively adjustingthe brightness or darkness of your image.
You can use these tools to improve your images in several
different ways:1. To improve the exposure of your photo and bring out detail2. To direct your viewers attention through creative use of
highlights and shadows3. To create impact by adding dramatic highlights and shadows

Blur- blurs the area where you paint.
Sharpen - increases contrast in the areas where you
paint. Smudge - blends the pixels where you paint
simulating the action of dragging a finger throughwet paint.

Blurring can also create creativeeffects to a photo. It sounds ironic, but too much sharpness can be toomuch of a good thing. This is true
especially if a sharp backgrounddistracts viewers from your real,
intended subject.

The Smudge tool simulates theactions of dragging a finger throughwet paint. The tool picks up colorwhere the stroke begins and pushes itin the direction you drag. You cansmudge existing colors in your image,or smear foreground color on the
image.

Levels
This is ideal for most color corrections, enables you to
adjust the darkest values, lightest values and midrangecolors for the entire selection.

Curves
This is great for creating
special effects and correctingimages beyond the help of theLevel command. Using this, you can map every brightnessvalue in every color channels.

Brightness and Contrast The Brightness/Contrast
adjustment lets you make
simple adjustments to the tonalrange of an image. Moving thebrightness slider to the rightincreases tonal values andexpands image highlights, to theleft decreases values and
expands shadows. The contrastslider expands or shrinks theoverall range of tonal values inthe image

Hue and Saturation
Hue/Saturation lets you adjustthe hue, saturation, and
lightness of a specific range ofcolors in an image orsimultaneously adjust all thecolors in an image. Thisadjustment is especially goodfor fine-tuning colors in a
CMYK image so that they are inthe gamut of an output device.
