@WEEVILFOOTBALL NOTESThe MatchupUAM will head to Shawnee, Oklahoma for a matchup at Oklahoma Baptist University on Saturday. It will be the fifth meeting between the two teams in their history dating back to 2015. The Weevils have a 3-1 series lead over the Bison and are riding a three-game winning streak. Last season, UAM hosted OBU and won, 45-37.

Coaching MatchupUAM head football Coach Hud Jackson is now 33 -61 in his UAM coaching career after his third consecutive win last week. His counterpart will be Chris Jensen who is in his seventh season at Oklahoma Baptist and he has compiled a 26-47 record.

Last MeetingThe Weevils and Bison had quite the shootout last season in Monticello on October 20. The teams combined for 905 passing yards and nine touchdowns through the air. Cole Sears and Preston Haire had a wild day with Sears going 21-for-38 with 412 yards and 4 TDs, while Haire was 43-for-64 for 493 yards 5 TD’s and 3 INT’s. It was UAM’s pick-6 that turned out to be the difference in the game as the Weevils won, 45-37.

About Last WeekUAM kept its win streak alive with an outstanding second half on its way to a 31-28 win over SNU. After falling behind 20-7 at the break, the Weevils scored 24 points in the second half before Southern Nazarene scored another touchdown. UAM rushed for 363 yards and four touchdowns on the day to earn the victory.

Can we talk about this home stretch? UAM is undefeated at home this season through its first four games. We have seen it all in those home games, from last second field goals to win it, blowouts and shootouts. The Weevils’ 4-0 record is its best home record since 2013. UAM began that season at home 5-0 before falling in its last home contest of the year to No. 4 Henderson State.

Best record since 2008Also following its win over SNU, the Weevils continue to make history improving to 5-2. The last time it was 5-2 through seven games was the year 2008. UAM finished that season with a 7-4 record overall and a 5-3 Gulf South Conference mark.

Rushing out aheadThrough its first two games of the season, Arkansas Tech and Harding held UAM under 100 yards on the ground. Since its trip to Searcy, the Weevils have been grounding and pounding. UAM’s lowest rush total since Harding was at Southeastern when it still ran for 162 yards. The Weevils have had three games where they’ve run for over 300 yards on the ground and they now rank second in the conference in rush yards per game at 223.9.

Dominating DevontaeRunning back Devontae Dean rushed for over 100 yards for the second time this season. However, it has not been his huge chunks of yardage that have made him one of the more threatening backs in the conference; it’s his ability to find the endzone. In the last three weeks alone, Dean has totaled six rushing touchdowns.

Some big plays by DemilonQuarterback Demilon Brown was quiet through the air last week against SNU, but did break off a big run against the Crimson Storm for a 74-yard touchdown. It’s the second time in three games that Brown has had a rushing touchdown for 68 yards or more. Brown also threw an 88-yard touchdown pass and a 42-yard touchdown pass two weeks ago.

Shutting Down the PassUAM will have its work cut out for it at OBU facing the top quarterback in the conference; however, it is no stranger to solid pass defense. The Weevils currently rank sixth in NCAA Division II in passing yards allowed per game at 130.9.

Getting to the QuarterbackMuch of UAM’s pass defense can be credited to solid play on the defensive line. The Weevils are currently third in sacks with 12.

Snatch it out of the airAnother important factor aiding in UAM’s pass defense has been its ability to pick the ball off and knock it down in the secondary. The Weevils are sixth in interceptions with seven and have 24 total pass breakups.

Spooky stats? For the third consecutive season, UAM has won its first three games in October. In October alone dating back to 2017 the Weevils are 9-2.

Some other stats on DefenseGabe Brace leads the team in tackles with 43, while Justin Legier is tops on the roster in tackles for loss with 8.0. Three players on UAM’s defense have 2.5 sacks including Michael Jenkins, Brandon Young and Chase Crosby. UAM picked off the football twice last week and now have six players with at least one interception in Christian Jefferson (2), Jonathan Scott (1), Easton Seidl (1), Bryce Anthony (1), Tyronne Brumfield (1) and Kerenzo Credit (1).

Scouting the BisonOklahoma Baptist is 3-4 this season and has been very odd in terms of rankings. The Bison are first in the conference in total offense (428.0) and passing offense per game (273.3), but last in points allowed per game (37.4), total defense per game (468.0) and passing defense per game (234.6).

OBU’s biggest weaponOBU has currently the best quarterback in the conference in Preston Haire who has thrown for 1,913 yards, 19 touchdowns and has just four interceptions. Haire has earned a pair of Great American Conference Player of the Week honors as well this season.

Top Defenders for OBUJosh Arnold has been the team’s best defender with 73 tackles with 4.0 of those being for loss, and 3.0 of them being sacks. Trajan Lands and Myles Russell have also contributed defensively with Lands totaling 57 tackles and 1.5 for loss and Russell tallying 3.5 tackles for loss and an interception.

William “Hud” Jackson enters his ninth year at the helm of the University of Arkansas at Monticello Football Program. Jackson was named the 25th head football coach in UAM’s history and has been mentoring Boll Weevils since 2011.

In the last eight years, UAM is 29-59 under Jackson. His 29 wins are now tied for fourth-most all-time in Boll Weevil football history. Jackson has also guided six All-American honorees, nine All-Region selections and 33 All-Great American Conference athletes. Several of Jackson’s former players have also gone on to play at the next level including Erik Croker (NFL), Jalen Tolliver (NFL), D.J. Stephens (AFL), Cole Sears (CFL) and Keith Reynolds (CFL).

Last season, Jackson coached the Boll Weevils to a 6-6 record and coached All-American DeAndre Washington to a stellar sophomore season. The Weevils also earned an invitation to play in the Corsicana Bowl in Corsicana, Texas, after knocking-off rival, Southern Arkansas in the Battle of the Timberlands on Senior Day.

Jackson was named UAM’s 25th head football coach on his 43rd birthday, December 14, 2010. He led the Boll Weevils to a 5-6 record during his first year in the green and white, including a stunning 23-9 victory over then ranked No. 4 Valdosta State in the fifth week of the season. He guided the Boll Weevils to a fourth place finish in the first year of the Great American Conference after the league’s head coaches picked UAM to finish last.

Along the way, UAM ranked in the top half of 20 different GAC statistical categories, including the league’s best numbers in total interceptions (17) and first downs (21.8 per game). His offense ranked third with an average of just under 400 yards per game, and his defense also ranked third with just 362.5 yards per game allowed.

Jackson and his staff produced nine all-conference selections during the 2011 campaign, including a trio of first team honorees in receiver D.J. Stephens, returning offensive lineman Seth Oxner and punter Derek Jambon.

In addition to his attention to on-field production, Jackson’s staff has also revamped the UAM football roster, striving to secure as much local talent as possible. In his first recruiting class prior to the 2011 season, Jackson unveiled a list of 34 high school seniors, 22 of which coming from within a 90-mile radius of the UAM campus. More of the same this past February with another dozen locked up from within that area.

Prior to taking the UAM job, Jackson had served the previous six seasons as associate head coach at University of Central Arkansas, a member of the NCAA Division I-Football Championship Subdivision.

As associate head coach at UCA, Jackson aided Clint Conque’s Bears in the school’s transition from the Gulf South Conference to becoming one of the nation’s top Division I-FCS programs. He was the director of football operations at UCA, which included the organization of the team’s travel, the bidding and ordering of all football equipment and supervision of student managers. In addition to his duties as UCA’s director of football operations, Jackson coached the running backs and return specialists. At UCA, Jackson coached Brent Grimes, a two-time All-Southland Conference running back (2008-09) and an All-America honoree in 2009. Jackson also coached Kentrel Rogers, who earned All-America honors in 2005, and most recently was named to the Gulf South Conference All-Decade team. Two of Jackson’s return specialists were the best in the SLC. Tristan Jackson earned All-America and All-SLC honors after leading all NCAA divisions in 2007 with an average of 23.6 yards per punt return and 25.8 yards per kickoff return. A year later, T.J. Adams led the SLC with an average of 26.6 yards per kickoff return. The Bears were 7-4 in 2010 with a 4-3 mark in the SLC, and were ranked in the FCS Top 25 poll for the fourth straight season. In 2008, Jackson helped UCA to its most successful season since moving to Division I-FCS, posting a 10-2 overall record while winning the SLC title with a 6-1 league record. The Bears finished ranked No. 12 in the final polls and had 15 All-SLC honorees. Prior to joining the staff at UCA, Jackson served a variety of roles at Central Catholic High School in Morgan City, La. from 1997-2005. In addition to being the athletics director, head football coach and head baseball coach, he also served as the school’s disciplinarian, textbook coordinator and mission development coordinator, as well as assisting the school’s fundraising initiatives. At CCHS, Jackson led his football teams to an overall record of 65-32, including a state runner-up finish in 1997 and three district championships (1997, 2000, 2004). After each of those titles, he was named district coach of the year. He coached Curtis Randall at CCHS, who played for the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks in 2004. As head baseball coach, Jackson led CCHS to an overall record of 84-36, including three state championships (2002, 2004-05). He earned district coach of the year honors four times in baseball (2000, 2002-04). Jackson entered the coaching ranks as an assistant football and baseball coach at Rayne (La.) High School in 1992, and remained on staff until 1993. At Rayne, Jackson assisted the school’s baseball team in its 1992 state championship campaign. In 1993, Jackson moved to Assumption High School in Napoleonville, La., where he served for three seasons as the football team’s offensive coordinator and assistant baseball coach. The next stop for Jackson was Oberlin (La.) High School from 1995-97. During that tenure, he served as the school’s athletics director, head football coach and head baseball coach. Jackson graduated from E.D. White High School in Thibodaux, La. in 1987, where he was an all-state baseball player. He continued his education at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, La., where he earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 1992. Jackson was a three-year starter at quarterback for the Cowboys. He also lettered in baseball, earning the team’s most valuable player and outstanding pitcher awards in 1991. Jackson’s father, Sonny, was the head football coach at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux from 1981-1986, and is still the program’s most successful coach. During his tenure, Sonny Jackson led the Colonels to a 39-28-1 record, winning the Gulf Star Conference in 1984 and taking NSU to its first ever NCAA Division I-AA playoff appearance in 1986. He was also the head coach at McNeese State for three seasons from 1987-89. Hud Jackson and his wife, Patricia, were married in 1989. They have one son, William, Jr. (25), and two daughters, Alexis (29) and Baleigh (20).
