Upward Bound News Winter 2016
On September 26,
we went to the Minneso-
ta Zoo for a behind-the-
scenes tour to learn
more about careers at
the zoo.
The zoo employ-
ees work in a variety of
areas including nutrition,
behavior, medical care,
habitat design, human
resources, and marketing
to name a few.

Actual spring will
be here before you know
it and with it, a whole new
set of tasks and challeng-
es!
We saw where
some of the food was
stored including the
Hostess treats that they
use for rewards when
animals cooperate with
their own medical care.
We also learned
that some of the ani-
mals’ favorite scent is
Brittany Spears perfume.
In addition to
learning about the
behind-the-scenes as-
pect of the zoo, students
also enjoyed looking at
the ani-
mals and
even
petting
and feed-
ing some
of them.

October “Saturday Academy At our October
“Saturday” Academy,
students from both
TRIO Upward Bound
and TRIO Educational
Talent Search, partici-
pated in a variety of ac-
tivities to prepare them
for the upcoming
school year.
First, the SLC
committee members
led several get-to-know
-you activities so mem-
bers could learn each
other’s names as well as
a little bit more about
their interests and hob-
bies.
Then, we broke
into grade-level groups.
De’Andre and Shiny
played a college trivia
game with the freshman
and sophomores. Jennifer
led an ACT prep work-
shop for juniors and
Charles and Lucia helped
seniors start filling out
college applications.
After lunch, we
went to the Mill City Mu-
seum where we watched
Minneapolis in 19 Minutes
Flat, went on the Flour
Tower elevator, and did a
scavenger hunt while
looking at the exhibits.
It was a great day
of educational activities
and a chance to meet and
talk to new people!

training.
Tex Ostvig, Vice
President of Equity and
Diversity at the U of M,
Twin Cities, spent the
morning with students
and staff. Tex helped stu-
dents reflect on their
leadership style and
shared with them his
belief in being a “servant
leader.” Students
worked in small groups
as well as participated in
a large group discussion.
Tex’s energy and
passion for fostering pos-
itive leadership qualities
in youth during the
workshop was both in-
formative and inspiring.
After we worked
with Tex, students split
SLC members!
up into three groups to
plan the get-to-know-
you activity that they
would lead the next day.
Finally, students
split up by program to
plan the rest of the
events for the year. Both
SLC committees led oth-
er activities during the
year while at program
events including commu-
nity service projects.
It was a great
start to the year for our

December Saturday Academy On December 5 UB
members rang bells for the
Salvation Army at the Mall of
America. It is an annual tradi-
tion and a favorite among the
students.
During lunch, students were required to complete a
financial literacy activity relat-
ed to their lunch purchase
and then we all met in
November Saturday Academy
Barnes and Noble so they
could choose books for the
February literacy activity.
An unexpected, but
happy surprise was meeting
Mustafa’s baby boy, Idris,
when he stopped by to see us at Barnes and Noble!
On November 14,
UB students rode the bus
up to tour Saint Cloud State
University. In addition to
walking around campus on a
gorgeous fall day, students
heard from both staff and
students. Mar-
tha Noyola,
Assistant Di-
rector of the
Student of
Color Out-
reach Program
and Academic
Advisor, shared her journey
to and through higher edu-
cation. She also assembled a
panel of students who
spoke to their experiences
at SCSU.
Finally, Brian Sebera,
an admissions
rep talked to students
about his experiences at
SCSU as an athlete.

January Saturday Academy In January we started
the day with another SLC
activity. The students made
Valentine’s day cards for kids
who were in the hospital.
The creativity definitely
flowed with one person making an elaborate pop-up
card!
After that students
were put into groups to play
the board game PayDay
which takes them through a
month of bills, paydays,
February Saturday Academy
lotteries, unexpected ex-
penses, loans, and more bills.
Teams went through two
months’ worth of expenses
and whoever had the most
money at the end, won. Stu-
dents had to make choices about investments and deal
with broken cars and plumb-
ing repairs.
After lunch, we went
to the Walker Art Center
for a guided tour called Me,
Myself, and I where we looked
at certain pieces of art and dis-
cussed the artist, the artists’
background, and then our own
interpretation of the art.
Students particularly
enjoyed looking at the special exhibition by Jack Whitten and
many students planned to go
back on their own time.
In February, students got
into groups based on their book genre and created a poster that
represented their genre and their books. They had to define
their genre and find similarities and differences between their
books. Finally, they presented their poster to the group. After enjoying the taco
buffet lunch, students learned business etiquette from Bethany
who is with Doors to Success. The workshop gave students
valuable tips and was enjoyable!
March Saturday Academy In March, we toured
the Ordway Center for the
Performing Arts and learned
about different careers avail-
able at the theater.
After the tour we
walked over to the Science
Museum of Minnesota
where we watched National
Parks Adventure and ex-
plored the exhibits including
“Weighing the Evidence,”
which showcases questiona-
ble medical devices.

As part of your
spring cleaning, I encourage
you to “clean up” your pass-
words.
As current seniors
know, you will need a pass-
word for EVERYTHING, all the time! The FAFSA re-
quires not only an ID, but
also login information to
make changes to your
FAFSA, which you will need
to do at some point. And,
even before you choose a
college, you will most likely
need to log into each col-
lege’s system.
This login information is in addition to your
school’s site(s), ACT, email,
etc. Keeping your passwords
(and student ID’s, SSN, etc.)
in a safe, but accessible place
will save you (and your UB
staff!) a lot of time and energy
as you get ready for college!
