Urban Desi Concert & Conference curates entertainers of the South Asian diaspora at the
global crossroads of the world.
DESI in NYC
DESI in NYC aims to bring vibrant Desi communities of New York together and create a
talented diaspora of artists and entrepreneurs. For over many decades New York has been
welcoming South Asians with open arms, so we want to proudly present what this city has
reaped.
T H E S O U T H A S I A N D I A S P O R AMUSIC has no language or boundaries - we all know this.
What MUSIC also does, that is extremely powerful is that it brings people
together; despite culture, race, religion or ethnicity. It builds a community.
The South Asian population in the United Kingdom is approximately 3.2 million (about 5 percent of the total population).
The US population of South Asian Americans is approximately 4 million and the population of South Asians in Canada is
almost 1.6 million.*
The South Asian community has only increased both in number and designation throughout the world and is making a
mark for themselves individually. Numerous first and second generation South Asians are now living, working and
continuing their family in these countries. The youth of this emerging powerful community has found their own niche, their
own heritage - by keeping both their traditional roots alive and fusing it with their new culture. It can be clothes, food, lingo,
movies but most importantly - MUSIC.
Music is large, it is loud but in the most pleasant way. It is heard by millions all across the globe and creates loyalty. The
fusion of both our cultures back home and here in the West has given birth to a new genre of music, infamously known as
the Urban Asian or the Urban Desi scene of music. This genre is represented by numerous first and second generation
individuals living all around the world. They have paved the path for something larger and the biggest names in the Urban
Desi scene are now coming to share this path in the greatest and most diverse city of the world - NEW YORK CITY!
