Restaurants are located all over the city of Florence. Restaurants consist of: Cafe, Tabacci, Tracceria.
Super Markets are located on the outside northwest and southeast corners of the city.
Grocery Stores are placed similarly to Super Markets.
Fresh Foods are placed selectively in the city. However, the locations are convenient for city population.

typical red tile is the main roof material in Frienze. Contemporary roof materials such as metal, asphalt, and concrete are more rare. However, the Piazza Lorenzo Ghiberti block (shown by white ellipse) uses most new materials of the city to make the block more diverse and flexible.

the newspaper building face north west, has niceview of the Duomo. Windows on the facade are extreme thin and tall, yet still take 40% area of the whole facade for its density, to enhance the view experience to Duomo. And two types of materials are applied on the facade for the commercial portion and the office portion.
the architecture school faces north east, which rarely recieves direct light. The fenestration of this facade has the largest area to obtain enough natural lighting for the students

“three-in-one” urban renewal educational the growing market
activity on the site can be described as “around the site.” Much of the open space around the site have various functions, but they all serve their purpose. The actually site lacks a true function thus the typical activity that takes place in it seems not be able to pass idle chatting and through traffic.
behind the school is located a pathway. The path appears to be an attempt to link the upper piazza [our site] to the lower apartment complex. Small tables and chairs are located along the path and seem to be used by the school’s students occasionally. Though it’s only use it seems a symbolic “road to nowhere” on the site
courtyards designed for group entertainment and new apartment renovations are located to the south the site. Modern and neoclassical architecture fuse in this lower space appears to be part of a project that was to revitalize some of the spaces around the site.

summer The summer months are hot, and can reach temperatures around 90° Fahrenheit in the afternoon and evenings. Humidity can average around 70% for the summer months also. Suggested techniques for passive cooling would be to properly shade windows.
winter Winters can be milder with lots of rain, but still require heating to keep most buildings within the comfort zone. Passive heating is highly recommended for design. Along with direct internal gain, since the project is a load dominated building type.

Junyao Zheng: It is always hard to design a modern building which could has harmony reactions with tremedous historical background like in the city of Florence. Also the designers are expected to choose approprate materials carfully of the new building among the historical city. From materiality aspect, the site is the most modern material used bolck in the city of Florence. The roof of buildings arround the site are made of concrete, asphalt, and metal, instead of red clay tile roof which is commonly used in Florence. It gives designers potential possibility to use modern materials, like glass, plastics, for the new gastronomy center. Furthermore, the facade materials of buildings arround site are commonly stone. However, the newspaper building gives a new way to develope the materiality. The designers decided to use modern materials-metal and glass for the commercial ground floor, and triditional stone for the upper office floors. The new gastronomy center could react this new way to fit in sit perfectly. By studying the facade of building arround the piazza, the north facade is very important since people have the Duomo view above second floor. Meanwhile the fenestration size keep changing as different orientations.
Nathan Yanosick: My response to the site starts with how I feel people interact with the site. The site is located in a very busy part of the city. The local fresh market is next to the site, and a large university. Though with all the activity surrounding the site, the actual site lacks this activity. In my opinion this is because the site lacks purpose. It is large and vacant with no function. It is just “open space.” This open space in my opinion needs to be put into better use. Especially considering its potential due to its very busy location. I believe for this site to truly achieve its purpose it must be put to full use. Though this will be difficult since the site is also an entryway for many other buildings. I must respect the current buildings in around the site while also giving new purpose to the site. I also must respect the buildings such as the fresh market, and the local urban housing project to the south so that the site’s can help assist the buildings that define and would be the main users of it. I must also consider the very important context the site is in. It is located within the old city walls and thus has a small town feel to it still. Such as the amount of pedestrian traffic and small vehicle traffic around the site as opposed to the high traffic roads you get near the city walls.
Danny Armagno: The analysis can be summed up through food culture analysis, andtransportation analysis. Restaurants are in immediate access all over the city due to cultural demand to having traditional meal times. Markets have had their best success in the northwest and southeast areas of Florence. Firstly, Walking and biking are the two most efficient ways of transportationin the city because of the narrow streets and high population. Driving is taken toits best advantage outside of the city on the main roads that surround the city. Two parking garages by the site are the most efficient parking for commuters by car into the city. The site is located between two rings of transportation: walking/biking vs.driving. The site must take into consideration the two different types of traffic and allow both to effectively travel through the site. Secondly, the space must fulfill the local’s convenience of steady use and not allow the quiet space to be occupied by festivals produced by commercial foods during the summer months. A low-key social atmosphere that can be designed to allow comfort levels of climate to be met year-round will be the goal to reach fromthis analysis.

funPiazza Risorgimento

simplicity is the leading element in this design, and the reason I love the project so much. Piazza Risorgimento is a key piazza for the small town it is located in. The firm ma0 was hired to renew the piazza back to life with a limited budget. The firm did a wonderful recreating the space designed around the simple idea of interaction and fun. The design called for the installation of benches on the sides of the piazza. These benches made of simple materials were designed to rotate around a point. The effect creates a dynamic in the space that brings it back to life. Every time one visits the piazza the space changes slightly. The project brings new life to this piazza through fun and play.

material in this project goes beyond any physical texture and look, but goes to the very core of how material makes the experience personal for everyone who visits. Many different materials are used to define the urban floor space. Each user of the piazza can then determine how they want to use the material. I love this because of the ability to let people design the space themselves and allow them to use the space in a variety of ways without a complicated design system, but rather with very simple lines of material.

Churtichaga + QUadra-Salcedo Arquitectos Almazan, Spain
this piazza was built in the middle of a large historical center of the city. Surrounded by old buildings that make the site so famous and popular among tourist, and the city’s retired population. This piazza’s design chose to highlight all those elements in a simple way. By articulating the views of the town’s elements through the use of different levels. The keynote level being the lookout level, the highest point in which you can view the town’s river and city scape. The middle level that puts you in the middle of this town’s historical piazza, and then the piazza takes you down to the lowest level of the river to see where the city’s life comes from. All while controlling and focusing your views along the way.

light and shadow have always been valuable tools for architects. In the modern world these elements have grown with the invention of modern lighting. Lighting is very important for public places because it is one of the main factors that determine how one feels in the space. The lighting through interactive elements such as seats is what attracted me to this project. It brings lighting down to the level of those interacting in the site adding a sense of comfort to the space. Also the creative and fun way the light is added can add a better sense of security to the site. Also the seat lights can create new interesting shadows and tones of the people who interact with them.

theatres are the home of entertainment. The thing I love about this project is not just the way it articulated the theatre space in it, but also the way it managed to turn the public spaces into theatre spaces also. The catwalks and many double height spaces in this project allow people who just waiting for a show to be part of the theatrics and be a part of the show and experience as well. Though the catwalks not over revealing sometimes only give you a tight view of below and others they allow you to see the whole space making the theatrics of this space to be different with every view.

this project is for a community center on the outskirts of Rome. The project is a very simple structure consisting of one large room mainly that is attached to an outdoor space nearby with a piazza. The project wanted to unite the exterior and interior spaces. Thus they used large structural elements to create a canopy outside. The structural elements also clearly continue inside creating a connection between the two. I believe this connection helps introduce more people into the building and make it appear more inviting. I also enjoy the simpleness of the structural elements that unite the exterior and interior spaces.

a canteen is a very important social location for an university. Built on a site with many other historical buildings this project took it’s importance and reinterpreted it in a new way. By sinking down in it’s site the project manages to almost hide itself along campus. Keeping the rest of the geometry very pure and simple allowed the building to blend in with the ground just enough to hide it’s true form on the site. Also the geometry of the front entrance attracts visitors with it’s very modern colonnade while
The facade of the canteen shows geometrically the double height eating space inside. This relationship alone with the pure geometry in the space makes this project one of my favourites.

built in a piazza located in Gorizia Italy, the Kbcenter is a new cultural center for the town. The project was built in a heavy urban fabric and thus is surrounded on 3 sides by urban blocks. The project integrates itself very well into the site through it’s plan and pure geometric forms. It also references classical elements, such as the sloped roof, and the arch in it’s design to integrate into the site more. It also interacts with the people of the site with it’s unique “sugar cube feature.” The cub extends from the interior to the exterior spaces of the site in order to attract people to the location in a new and interesting way.

this project was designed to fit in the urban area of Oulu. The exterior is simple and plain. The inside carries this same concept using very simple materials and plain walls. Though the thing about this project that make it unique for me are the spacial connections in the space. The project’s double height spaces link together the school and bring light down into the space for the students. The wood also helps accent these features as often it almost outlines the spaces for the students. Like as if they were lines on white paper.

the bold form of this project is what attracted me to project. The building folds up like pods over top of a public space on the lower floor. The public space penetrates the forms to create a pathway to the center courtyard space which could almost be considered as a protected jewel of public space. The form protects it from the outside world, but it does not seal it off from it. In the end the bold forms here highlight the central space instead of cut it off or make it nonfunctional.
