Monitoring Alpine Transportation Infrastructures
Using Space Techniques
• Densely inhabited Alps, large transportation networks• Alpine natural hazards with severe human and economic
consequences (rockfalls and landslides) • Railway and road operators responsible for safe operation
Infrastructure operators require:• Wide-area information providing probabilities and intensities
of potential hazards endangering their infrastructure ( satellite based deformation information)
• In case of imminent danger in a sensible section of the network more detailed measurements are required
( terrestrial deformation monitoring)• In case of emergency an early warning system is required
Needs and requirements for space-based services
•Our proposed solution is aiming at supporting users from the transportation infrastructure in the regional assessment of landslide hazard, the local monitoring of critical unstable slopes and the ground deformation monitoring in near real time with the integration of the space techniques radar interferometry (satellite and terrestrial) and GPS/GNSS.
•The main information to be provided is ground motion, which can include motion of the transportation infrastructure (railway, roads), motion of rocks or terrain slopes above transportation infrastructure, and motion caused by tunneling.
Scope of the feasibility project
• Satellite based deformation maps using differential interferometric SAR (DINSAR) and persistent scatterer interferometry (PSI) GAMMA)
• Satellite based deformation monitoring (GAMMA)
• Terrestrial interferometric radar measurements (GAMMA)
• GPS/GNSS Solutions (INAS TU-Graz)
