Introduction
This lecturer’s guide is an accompaniment to the learner’s guide for the unit CPCCCA2002B Use carpentry tools and equipment. It will assist you in the delivery of the unit and provides suggestions for assessing the knowledge and skills learners need to work in the carpentry and joinery sector of the building and construction industry.
Areas of explanation in the unit include:
• planning and preparing for work tasks
• identifying and selecting tools, plant and equipment including hand, power and pneumatic tools
• using and maintaining tools, plant and equipment
• cleaning up the work area.
In addition to the classroom‑based training for this unit, learners will also spend time in the workshop, working with carpentry tools and equipment.
Delivery and assessment overviewNote: It is intended that this unit will be delivered via a combination of face‑to‑face training in a classroom environment, utilising the content and activities provided in the learner’s guide, and integrated workshop activities that provide learners with hands‑on experience and the opportunity to develop and demonstrate their competency in the required skills and knowledge for the unit.
Two assessments are provided for this unit; however, please note that these are suggested assessment activities only and you are welcome to replace them with your preferred assessment tools. You will need to ensure that your assessment methodology meets the requirements of the unit – specifically that it must include direct observation of tasks in real or simulated work conditions.
To meet this requirement for this unit, we have created a ‘Workshop observation checklist’ for both assessments to cover aspects of the unit that are not directly assessable in the written component of the tasks.
You can perform these assessments yourself in a workshop (simulated workplace), on the job or during work placement. It may also be appropriate to ask the work placement supervisor to provide third‑party evidence by completing the observation checklist.
There will also be hands‑on learning opportunities provided within the work placement component of the course, and we encourage you to leverage these as part of your delivery and assessment strategy.
Note: Because this unit is part of other building and construction qualifications, these resources may be used outside of the Certificate II in Building and Construction (Pathway – Trades) qualification.

Qualification overviewThis unit of competency, CPCCCA2002B Use carpentry tools and equipment, forms part of Certificate II in Building and Construction (Pathway – Trades), a pre-vocational course for learners seeking to gain an apprenticeship in the building and construction industry. The focus of this course is on developing relevant technical, vocational and interpersonal competencies as well as skills, knowledge and experiences that may be transferable to other industry areas. Learners will also gain employability skills relevant to an entry level employee of the industry.
The first component of the course consists of seven core units of competency (common to 11 construction trades) and a period of work placement. This component, which would typically be delivered over a one‑year period, is designed to provide learners with a tradesperson’s introduction to the building and construction industry.
In the second component of the course, typically undertaken in the second year of study, learners will choose from 10 trade-specific streams of units of competency that enable them to focus their learning on a particular trade such as bricklaying, painting or carpentry.
To progress further in the industry, beyond this introductory level, learners will then need to gain an apprenticeship in their chosen trades area, or pursue further training within the building and construction field.

Introduction
Unit overviewThis unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to use carpentry tools and equipment.
No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of endorsement.
The full unit of competency is provided for you at Annex A to this guide.
Resources and preparationTo deliver this unit effectively you will need to familiarise yourself with the learner’s guide. It is recommended that you take with you to class examples of documents where appropriate and some stories/articles to prompt discussion.
You will need to provide:
• computers with internet access
• examples of construction plans, specifications and/or drawings
• an example of a carpentry task or job
• access to a workshop with appropriate tools and equipment to support learning forthis unit
• appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for learners to use in theworkshop.
You may also need copies of relevant legislation, planning codes, Regulations and standards to use as references, although this is not a requirement for the learner’s guide.
Learners are required to provide:
• an A4 notepad
• an A4 file for notes, handouts and printed documents
• pens, pencils, eraser and highlighters.
Any websites noted in this guide need to be checked before a topic is delivered, as addresses can change without notice.
Resources noted in the learner’s guide may also vary across regions, especially where state/territory legislation is referred to. Please review these in context with your own local requirements.

The learner’s guide
Format and intentIn the learner’s guide, you’ll find a variety of material to help you deliver this unit. This includes:
• text, images and diagrams
• activities including discussions, research and written activities, all related to the content most recently covered.
All activities are designed to be written directly into the learner’s guide. When learners have finished the unit, their guide should be complete and able to be used as a reliable reference in the future. For this to be the case, the activities need to be checked and/or discussed to give learners the opportunity to correct any incorrect answers and finish off any incomplete activities.
The learner’s guide also contains the two suggested assessments for this unit.
Note: The learner’s guide is not intended to be content‑heavy, and it is not a textbook. It is designed to complement your classroom delivery and provide learners with a summary of the unit content.
ContentThe content is divided into five sections, with several topics covered in each section.
In Section 1, the focus is on how to plan and prepare for a work task. Safety and environmental requirements are also introduced in the context of pre‑work considerations.
Section 2 introduces learners to a range of hand tools they’ll be using for carpentry and joinery tasks. Topics include measuring tools, saws, drills, planes and chisels.
Section 3 is dedicated to using power tools safely, and due to the high risk involved with power tools, this comes before Section 4 where the actual power tools themselves are explored.
The topic of clean‑up is covered in Section 5, with a particular focus on waste management, and the cleaning, maintenance and storage of tools and equipment.
Note: Due to the number of hand and power tools that need to be explained, Sections 2 and 4 are much larger than Sections 1, 3 and 5. We recommend that you schedule your delivery of Sections 2 and 4 over several sessions, and integrate workshop time so that learners can get hands‑on experience with the tools and equipment they are learning about.

Delivery strategy
This section provides suggestions to help you deliver this unit and achieve the desired learning outcomes. A delivery guide showing how the activities in the learner’s guide map to the unit is provided at Annex B to this guide.
Throughout the learner’s guide are a series of activities, discussion points and case studies designed to assist learners to retain and engage with the content. You should look through these before each session to ensure that you are able to guide any learners who need assistance. If you have not done so already, get a copy of the learner’s guide and familiarise yourself with it.
Some activities require learners to work in pairs or groups. You may need to put learners into these pairs or groups yourself to improve participation and outcomes, rather than leaving learners to decide who to work with.
The following table provides some ideas that may be useful to you in preparing for, or facilitating, specific activities in the learner’s guide.
Activity Suggestion
Activity 1.1 Finding information
You will need to provide examples of construction plans, specifications and drawings for this activity – providing a wide variety of documents will optimise the learning.
Activity 1.2 Policies and procedures
Learners may find this challenging if they are not familiar with policy and/or procedural documents. You could provide an example from your own workshop, or facilitate this as a group activity where everyone can contribute to developing a policy for the workshop.

Internet access is required for these research activities. Allow learners enough time to locate the information they need.
Activity 1.6 Organising materials
You will need to provide an example of a carpentry task or job for this activity. Check the questions that are posed, to ensure that the answers can be found in the example you use. If necessary, change the questions to suit your example task.
Activities 1.7–1.11 These activities are mostly revision from the OHS unit that learners would have already completed. You may need to adjust the time spent on this section of content and activities to suit your group’s level of existing knowledge.

Section 2 (in general) A lot of activities in this section are based on the theme of ‘your toolkit’, in which learners have to select the types of tools per category, eg measuring tools they will need in their own toolkit for the type of carpentry they plan to do within the trade.
If learners haven’t yet decided what type of work they want to do within carpentry, or even within the industry, you will need to adjust these activities accordingly.
You should also prep your workshop with as many examples of the tools in Section 2 as possible, and other types of these tools where appropriate.
Activity 2.3 Carpentry angles
Learners have to find 90° and 45° angles in the room and/or building they’re in.
You should prepare for this activity by finding these angles yourself beforehand, so that you can point learners in the right direction if necessary.
Activity 2.10 Communication barriers
This activity is designed to help learners understand the different terminology used to describe tools and equipment.
You may need to provide some prompts to help facilitate the discussion if learners don’t know this terminology.
Activity 2.17 Tool sharpening
This activity requires computer and internet access. If that is not available, please change the activity as appropriate.
Activity 4.6 Calculations
Learners should have previously completed the ‘measurements and calculations’ unit, and be familiar with this kind of task; however, some extra support with the calculations may be required.
Activity 5.2 Handling and disposing of hazardous and toxic materials
This activity is designed to cover a range of hazardous and/or toxic materials, and the issues to consider for their handling and disposal.
You should support this activity by providing relevant Standards, Regulations, legislation and policy documents (alternatively, allow learners to research these online) to help explain procedures required for certain materials such as asbestos.
Please refer to the delivery guide at Annex B to this guide to see the mapping of activities to the unit of competency.

Assessment summary
The assessments are designed to assess competency in the five elements of the unit.
Two assessments are provided; however, please note that these are suggested assessment activities only and you are welcome to replace them with your preferred assessment tools. You will need to ensure that your assessment methodology meets the requirements of the unit.
A matrix is included in Annex D to this guide, showing how the assessment tasks map to the unit performance criteria. The assessments suggested for this unit are intended to be location- and situation-specific. Therefore, there are no definitive answers to outcomes. You will need to determine for yourself whether learners’ submissions are satisfactory.
These assessments allow for some flexibility in their scheduling, so that you can customise your delivery and assessment plan to suit your learner group(s). For example, you could:
• do both assessments as stand‑alone tasks, after you have completed delivery of all the classroom sessions
• work through the first assessment by integrating it with classroom sessions, then do the second assessment as a stand‑alone task (or vice versa)
• integrate both assessments with your classroom sessions.
Although the observation component for each assessment has been designed to be undertaken in conjunction with the actual task of building the saw stool and the toolbox, you may choose to perform them in a simulated workplace, on the job or during work placement. It may also be appropriate to ask the work placement supervisor to provide third‑party evidence by completing the observation checklist.
PreparationPlease note that for some assessment activities, you will need to make arrangements to use specific tools and equipment in the workshop. You should also consider how best to schedule these activities to enable observation for assessment purposes.

Application This unit of competency supports achievement of skills in identification, correct and safe use and maintenance of hand and power tools commonly used in the construction industry.
Element 1 Plan and prepare
1.1 Work instructions and operational details are obtained, confirmed and applied from relevant information to undertake planning and preparation.
1.2 Safety (OHS) requirements are followed in accordance with safety plans and policies.
1.3 Signage and barricade requirements are identified and implemented.
1.4 Plant and equipment selected to carry out tasks are consistent with job requirements, checked for serviceability, and any faults are rectified or reported prior to commencement.
1.5 Material quantity requirements are calculated in accordance with plans, specifications and quality requirements.
1.6 Materials appropriate to the work application are identified, obtained, prepared, safely handled and located ready for use.
1.7 Environmental requirements are identified for the project in accordance with environmental plans and statutory and regulatory authority obligations, and are applied.

Evidence guideThe evidence guide provides advice on assessment and must be read in conjunction with the performance criteria, required skills and knowledge, range statement and the Assessment Guidelines for the Training Package.
Overview of assessment
This unit of competency could be assessed in the workplace or a close simulation of the workplace environment, provided that simulated or project‑based assessment techniques fully replicate construction workplace conditions, materials, activities, responsibilities and procedures.
Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required demonstrate competency in this unit
A person who demonstrates competency in this unit must be able to provide evidence of the ability to:
• locate, interpret and apply relevant information, standards and specifications
• comply with site safety plan and OHS legislation, regulations and codes of practice applicable to workplace operations
• comply with organisational policies and procedures, including quality requirements
• safely and effectively use tools, plant and equipment
• communicate and work effectively and safely with others
• identify and select hand tools for given tasks
• safely use and maintain a minimum of rules, tapes, squares, hammers, hand saws, hand planes and chisels for given tasks
• identify power and pneumatic tools for a given task
• safely use a minimum of a power saw, electric plane, impact power drill, nail gun and compressor or equivalent types of equipment for given tasks
• maintain equipment according to manufacturer’s recommendations or organisational requirements.

Context of and specific resources for assessment
This competency is to be assessed using standard and authorised work practices, safety requirements and environmental constraints.
Assessment of essential underpinning knowledge will usually be conducted in an off‑site context.
Assessment is to comply with relevant regulatory or Australian standards’ requirements.
Resource implications for assessment include:
• an induction procedure and requirement
• realistic tasks or simulated tasks covering the mandatory task requirements
• relevant specifications and work instructions
• tools and equipment appropriate to applying safe work practices
• support materials appropriate to activity
• workplace instructions relating to safe work practices and addressing hazards and emergencies
• material safety data sheets
• research resources, including industry‑related systems information.
Reasonable adjustments for people with disabilities must be made to assessment processes where required. This could include access to modified equipment and other physical resources, and the provision of appropriate assessment support.

Method of assessment
Assessment methods must:
• satisfy the endorsed Assessment Guidelines of the Construction, Plumbing and Services Training Package
• include direct observation of tasks in real or simulated work conditions, with questioning to confirm the ability to consistently identify and correctly interpret the essential underpinning knowledge required for practical application
• reinforce the integration of employability skills with workplace tasks and job roles
• confirm that competency is verified and able to be transferred to other circumstances and environments.
Validity and sufficiency of evidence requires that:
• competency will need to be demonstrated over a period of time reflecting the scope of the role and the practical requirements of the workplace
• where the assessment is part of a structured learning experience the evidence collected must relate to a number of performances assessed at different points in time and separated by further learning and practice, with a decision on competency only taken at the point when the assessor has complete confidence in the person’s demonstrated ability and applied knowledge
• all assessment that is part of a structured learning experience must include a combination of direct, indirect and supplementary evidence.
Assessment processes and techniques should as far as is practical take into account the language, literacy and numeracy capacity of the candidate in relation to the competency being assessed.
Supplementary evidence of competency may be obtained from relevant authenticated documentation from third parties, such as existing supervisors, team leaders or specialist training staff.
