There are three kinds of VERBS

1. Action Verbs
Action Verbs• Tells what action is occurring• Expresses physical or mental
activity.• Indicates the action of something
or someone (noun).–Examples: •Victor spoke French.• I thought about the weekend.

2. Linking Verbs
Linking Verbs• A linking verb does not show an
action; it shows a relationship.• A linking verb links or connects.• A linking verb connects the subject
(noun or pronoun) to a word(s) that identifies or describes the subject.
– Peanut is my toad. -Peanut is tiny.
Common Linking Verbs
• appear• become• feel• grow• look• seem
• remain• smell• sound• stay• taste• turn
Common Linking Verbs
All forms of “to be” State of being verbs
• is• am• are• was• were
Some verbs can function as either
linking verbs or action verbs. Linking Verbs Action Verbs
•The lily pond smells stagnant.
•The squirrel smells its food.
•The gardener felt tired.
•She felt the tree’s thick leaves.
Linking Verbs…• To help you decide whether one of these
verbs is a linking verb, try substituting is or are for the verb. If the sentence still makes sense, the verb is probably a linking verb.
• Examples:ÖThe pigeons look comical. ÖThe pigeons are comical.ÖThe pigeons look for their food.ÖThe pigeons are for their food.
