The Vermont Rail System offers shippers the ability to fully
realize the economic benefits of heavy haul rail with our
participation in the Green Mountain Gateway. The Green
Mountain Gateway combines the resources and scope of
transcontinental Class 1 railways with the local service
strengths of several of New England’s regional and short line
railroads. This gives customers an enhanced level of rail
service and opens up new market opportunities throughout
the U.S. and Canada.
The Green Mountain Gateway’s main route runs from
Whitehall, New York, through Bellows Falls, Vermont, and on
to New London, Connecticut. From any interchange point
along the route, participating railroads can direct traffic to
locations throughout New England. Commodities shipped
using the Gateway include lumber, paper, pulp, beverages,
food products, metals, grain, coal, chemicals, copper,
fertilizer, flyash, and minerals.
