- Uses a source and power meter- Reports the difference between power in and power out in dB
- Duplex (two fiber) testers can also measure length
• Tier 2
- Often referred to as OTDR or Optical Time Domain Reflectometer testing
- Injects a series of light pulses into a fiber and measures the backscatter
returned to the OTDR port
- Single ended test but must be done in both directions
- Implies loss based on change in backscatter between events
- Depends on good reflectance which field polishing often fails to achieve

• Your loss may be lower than the allowed fixed loss, but if it exceeds
the length found here (IEEE 802.3) there may be errors on the network
• IEEE 802.3ae specifies 400 m, cabling vendors may specify 550 m

Local pharmacy stocks no better than 91% (not good enough)• There are disadvantages to IPA
- Over time, absorbs water and is no longer 98%
- Will not remove non ionic compounds
- Tends to leave a residue behind if you are not careful
• Hybrid cleaners are better, such as the Fluke Networks Fiber Optic Pen
• There are significant advantages with these new hybrid cleaners
- Aggressive cleaner, better than IPA
- Evaporates very quickly, less likely to leave residue behind
- Has antistatic properties so dust in the air is less likely to be attracted to the endface of the connector

Tier 2 Fiber Testing
(OTDR)
© 2014 Fluke Corporation. All rights reserved.
WHAT IS AN OTDR?
• Optical – measurements carried out using pulses of light.
• Time Domain – signal is plotted against time delay.
•Reflectometer - signal we’re looking at is caused by reflections
(and scattering) in the fiber.
8/11/2019 Versiv CCTT Version 1.0 n
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/versiv-cctt-version-10-n 175/199
• The OTDR launches a very short pulse of light into a fiber and then
looks at the very low levels of light which come back out of the
same end of the fiber.
• This returned light comes from reflections where there is a change
of refractive index in the light path (called Fresnel reflections) and
from a scattering effect which takes place within the fiber calledRayleigh Scattering.
© 2014 Fluke Corporation. All rights reserved
WHAT IS AN OTDR?
• The OTDR produces a trace of the returning light level against the
time delay compared to when the pulse of light was launched.

WHAT IS AN OTDR?
• With suitable processing and interpretation, this trace can then be
used to provide information about every portion of the fiber being
measured

• Although the fiber is tested in the factory, it can be
damaged during delivery or storage on site
• It is standard practice to use an OTDR to ensure no
breaks in the cable – but requires “expertise” to review the traces
