Why use a Vibration Monitor “Seismograph”

• Document Compliance with established vibration guidelines

• Protect Structures• Minimize risk of damage or annoyance• Protect yourself against claims and lawsuits• Control Blasting and Optimizing Blast using

Vibration Record

Vibration Terminology

• Geophone - The sensor for measuring ground vibrations• Microphone - Sensor used for measuring air blast• Peak Particle Velocity (PPV): - Maximum velocity over the record time on each channel measured in

mm/sec• Air Overpressure - Air pressure wave resulting from the blast is reported in dB(L) for linear

or dB(A) weight• Peak Sound Pressure Level Velocity (PSPL): - Maximum Air over pressure the record time on Microphone channel in

dB(L) as unit of noise.

Step 2: Select the Sample Rate• Available Sample Rates include 1024, 2048 and

4096 With the a Standard Geophone ISEE, a Sample Rate of

1024 samples per second is more than sufficient. With the a Standard Geophone DIN, a Sample Rate of

2048 samples per second is more than sufficient.• In Storage Mode, ensure that the monitor is set

to Save All Data

Step 6: Set the Record Time (continued) NOTE: Add the blast duration plus 1 second of Record Time

for every 335 m (1100 ft.) between the seismograph and the blast, otherwise you may cut off the recorded event, like the sample shown below:

Report if populated.LocationClientUser nameGeneralExtended NotesJob Number

Step 9: Adjust Special Setups• Timer Mode: Select Daily or Off• Daily Self Check: This will enter a line in the Monitor Log, telling the user that the

monitor was functioning properly on the specified date• Sensor Check: Select Before, After or Disable to determine if and when a Sensor

Check will be performed. The results will appear on the Event Report• Units of Measurements: Set the units to either Imperial or Metric

Remote MonitoringNeed to gather data from your site – not looking forward to the two-hour roundtrip? Is your job site hard-to-reach? Or maybe the event results need to be forwarded to several customers, clients or regulatory agencies simultaneously. The solution may be to establish a permanent or semi-permanent monitoring station that can be downloaded using telemetry.Instantel provides the features you need to quickly and easily set up remote monitoring stations and networks. The Instantel® Auto Call Home™ automated call-in feature, allows remote access to your monitor and data. Whenever an event occurs, the monitor automatically places a call to your PC and downloads event data into one central location on your hard disk drive.

Communication can be established using telephone, cellular, GSM or satellite modem connections.Once the files are on your computer, Instantel Blastware™ software enables automatic distribution of data to a wide variety of devices, such as cellular phones, pagers, PDA’s and PCs. You create "accounts" that specify what information will be sent to which recipients the entire event file, or selected data for each channel. You can also send different information to different recipients, or choose to time-delay distribution.

 Why Calibration is Important

Calibration is important to ensure the instrument is performing as per designed specification.

Although seismographs are designed to be used in a rugged environment, they are still a sophisticated electronic monitoring device. Therefore, preventative maintenance becomes an important part of the annual calibration process.

Calibrated vibration instrument can prevent legal litigations.
