• What, Why, When, Where, and How of movement for promoting preschoolers’ progress
• Types of movement• Tips for moving• Tools for movement with preschoolers
• 5 moving videos• 3 tests (moving principles, practices, promises)
Test of Principles
1. How many minutes a day children should engage in moderate or vigorous movement?
2. What does moderate & vigorous movement mean?
3. Examples of physical benefits of movement?
4. Examples of psychological benefits of movement?
5. Examples of ABCDEF types of movement?
What?• Encourage… Engage… Energize!
• Movement to promote preschoolers’ progress via Movement is…– Providing children opportunities for moderate
and vigorous activity 60 minutes every day
• Moderate and vigorous activity is…– On 0-10 scale, moderate is 5-6 (heart beating
faster and breathing harder than normal); vigorous is 7-8 (heart beating much faster and breathing much harder than normal, sweating)
Types of Movement
• Aerobic
• Balance
• Coordination
• Durability/Strength
• Endurance
• Flexibility
Types of Movement
• Aerobic- Walking, running, jumping, biking, swimming

Test of Practice
1. How many minutes a day are your preschoolers engaged in moderate to vigorous movement?
2. What types of movement your preschoolers practice every day?
3. What about you?
Facts
• The average child gets less than 15
minutes of vigorous activity a day• The average U.S. child gets less than 43 minutes
of moderate physical activity a day• The average U.S. child spends 20% of waking
time watching TV• The child of today is notably less fit and more fat
than the child of the 60's• The two biggest reasons kids participate in physical
activity are socialization and fun

When?
• Now!: Preschool years as foundational,
fundamental, basic, crucial• Early development windows of opportunity
(e.g., flexibility)• Beginning of enduring healthy or unhealthy habits
• Moderate & vigorous activities throughout the day• Preschoolers should not sit for more than 1 hour
and should spend less than 2 hours of screen time total daily
Where?Indoors• Duck-duck-goose• Follow the leader• Treasure hunt• Hide and seek • Ring around the rosy• Simon says• Activities inside recreation
center• Walking around shopping
mall
Where?Outdoors• Sports• Running• Freestyle dance • Playing catch • Games in the yard or park
• Play in playing structure• Family walks after dinner • Family bike rides
Walking
• Easy and affordable way to get moving and get outside
• From a walk around the block to walking a dog, to a mountain hike, opportunities to explore and learn
• Walking and hiking improve cardiovascular health and build stronger bones
Biking
• Fun, family-friendly activity, can help improve endurance and balance
• Use bike as a means of "active transport" to get places faster while also getting healthier
• Explore community by bike together
Swimming• When the weather is warm, there is
no better way to cool off - or get fit
• Burns more calories per hour than
almost any other activity
• Improves cardiovascular health and leads to greater strength and flexibility
• It's low-impact, easier on joints
How?
Moving by Example• Active adults tend to raise active children • Adults influence children’s attitudes, actions, habits• Moving as a family and as a class are fun, and have
bonding power• Children who feel supported by adults to be active, or
are surrounded by others who are, are more likely to be active
• Move together, stressing cooperation, fun, and health, rather than competition, weight, and performance
How?
Moving by Example• Take the stairs instead of the elevator• Walk around the block after meals• Make a house rule: no sitting still during TV ads• Find time to spend together doing a fun activity:
family park day, swim day or bike day• Issue a challenge to achieve a
Presidential Active Lifestyle Award by committing to physical activity 5 days a week, for 6 weeks
