Top preseason players in Class A over the years
as chosen by the 13th Region’s coachesThe All A Classic has been going on since 1990 and I can remember announcing many of
those 13th region games as well as a few from the state tournament when one of our local
teams was able to make it that far. The list below was compiled in the preseason of each of
those years and was based on the votes of the Class A school coaches in the reason. I’m
sure other players stepped up during each of these years and would have made a list of top
players if the vote had been taken at season’s end instead of the beginning. Irregardless of
when the vote was taken, there are some excellent players in this list.

Camp Cal Behind Them UK Enters Part 3
Of 2014-15 Season
Stoops & Assistants Begin Final Phase Of
2015 Recruiting Class
By – Ira D. Combs
Tri State Sports Media Service Inc.
Most college basketball experts will tell you
that each season is divided into (5) mini sea-
sons which consist of ( pre-season practice ,
non conference games , conference regular
season , conference post season , NCAA
tourney ) so this week UK enters the SEC
regular season portion of the schedule .
The Cats are ranked # 1 and considered a
prohibitive favorite to win the SEC regular
season title and quite possibly run the table
at 18 – 0 which if this materializes would put
them at 31 – 0 entering the SEC post season
tourney in Nashville , Tenn. and on schedule
for the ultimate prize of a 40 – 0 undefeated
season and NCAA championship # 9 . So far
there has been only a couple mild bumps in
the road . First was the season ending ACL
injury which sidelined Alex Poythress then
second was not as much a bump in the road
as it was the first physical hard fought chal-
lenge on the road with the possibility of
spoiling the undefeated season . At this point
it appears Poythress injury can be overcome
and the Louisville game while much like a
scrum match has been placed in the W col-
umn and everyone can now move forward .
So the big question during Camp Cal the last
10 days has been now that all the marquee
games (Kansas-Texas-UCLA-North Car-
olina-Louisville) are behind them and the
SEC once again not getting much respect
from the pollsters what can John Calipari do
to keep this team hungry ?
My guess is and what I would recommend is
to use what everybody doesn’t want to talk
about as a motivation factor . Tell the players
you want to do something special be a part
of history then let’s talk about going unde-
feated and keep it in the forefront and fresh
on their minds before they take the court for
every game . Your playing for a program that
deals constantly with being placed in the na-
tional media’s eye , the majority of your ros-
ter has already experienced playing on the
biggest stage . The UK freshman like most
of recent years have already been exposed to
more big time game day atmospheres thru
the all star game circuit than most juniors
and seniors .
I can’t think of anything else that would keep
the players minds from wondering and put-
ting an emphasis on attention to detail more
than constantly reminding them they are
square in the middle of doing something
very special , another words use the pressure
don’t let the pressure consume you .
As far as competition the upcoming (2)
months I’m not buying into what others are
saying especially on the road across the
south . When Kentucky arrives at places like
( Florida – LSU – Arkansas – Georgia ) it’s
very much like when the Alabama football
team rolls into town during the fall , every-
body raises there game a level . More 3’s fall
, more rebounds bounce into the home teams
hands , and the whistle mysteriously turns in
favor of the home team unlike Rupp Arena .
Everything taken into consideration it does
appear that this UK team is special enough
to pull off this 40 – 0 miracle season but it
has to go out every night hungry with a fresh
mind and true sense of purpose because it
will be the world against the blue team , at
least until they run into Duke .
UK Football Hits Final Leg Of
2015 Recruiting Season
Mark Stoops and his assistants are drifting
into the final leg of the 2015 recruiting sea-
son and must close the deal on about 17 ver-
bal commitments from the past year then reel
in a couple recruits who have not yet made
their decision .
The most coveted recruit still on the board at
this point resides just 25 minutes down the
road in Richmond , Ky. , Damien Harris who
many consider the # 1 running back in the
entire country is set to make his decision this
coming saturday and Harris has made it
known that the winner will come from ( UK
– Alabama – Ohio State ) . Many think
Stoops has done his homework and will get
the coveted prize come signing day but until
it happens it’s still pure speculation . Marcus
Lewis a 6’ 2” safety rated #154 in ESPN’s
top 300 from the Washington D.C. area is
still uncommitted and UK is reportedly
squarely in the mix .
Stoops already has verbal commitments
from (2) ESPN top 300 players in safety
Marcus Walker and LB Eli Brown , both
should have an opportunity to play as fresh-
man due to a severe lack of quality depth at
both of their positions . As always there will
be a surprise or two on signing day but if
Stoops can pull in the (4) above mentioned
recruits along with the 17 previous verbal
commitments it should provide UK with an-
other top 20 class like last year and maybe
it’s all time best .

FRANKFORT, Ky. – At about the time when
the winter boat show season starts to crank
up, the annual fishing forecast for Ken-
tucky’s major fisheries arrives as another
welcome diversion from the winter dol-
drums. The forecast is available online at
fw.ky.gov.
The 2015 edition highlights new and ex-
panding fisheries and late winter and early
spring hot spots. A special section makes it
easy to identify where the best fishing can be
expected for each species while the new up-
and-comers section spotlights lakes and
rivers that showed improvement last year.
For instance: the forecast for crappie has im-
proved from good to excellent at Lake Cum-
berland, Cave Run and Fishtrap lakes.
Here are a few other fisheries-related
items to follow in 2015.
Hatchery Creek restoration: Anglers
know the Cumberland River below Wolf
Creek Dam as a world-class trout fishery. An
improved Hatchery Creek will be another
reason to visit the area.
Fed by the outflow from Wolf Creek Na-
tional Fish Hatchery, located at the base of
the dam, the creek is being transformed
through a project undertaken by Kentucky
Fish and Wildlife, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service and the Army Corps of Engineers.
It includes construction of a new channel
to divert the creek away from a heavily-
eroded ravine that deposits sediment into the
Cumberland River below Lake Cumberland.
The new channel will meander for more than
a mile below the upper rip-rap area of the
creek through riffles and pools before emp-
tying into the river. One of the goals is to cre-
ate stream conditions that foster natural
reproduction of trout. “I would say
we’re doing very well and making good
progress,” said Mike Hardin, Assistant Fish-
eries Director for Kentucky Fish and
Wildlife. “Ideally, we’ll finish up most of the
work by spring or summer and hopefully
have enough of a growing season that we can
let some vegetation get established and grow
to stabilize the site before turning water
loose in it.”
Stocking will be dependent upon the nat-
ural migration of trout from the river into the
new creek from the time the project is com-
pleted to the time the new channel opens to
the public.
Anglers can track the progress of the
Hatchery Creek Stream and Wetland
Restoration Project by visiting Kentucky
Fish and Wildlife’s website. On the home-
page, click the “Fish” tab and choose
“Hatchery Creek Stream Project” from the
dropdown menu.
Improving fish habitat at Cave Run: The
project to improve fishing at Cave Run Lake
by increasing the amount of habitat available
for fish will see two more areas completed
by the summer of 2015. Much of the work
will be similar to this past year with cedar
trees, cable spools, stake buckets and other
structure being placed in the water to attract
fish.
“We also have a few new things includ-
ing large concrete culverts and hardwood
stumps,” said Tom Timmermann, northeast-
ern fisheries district biologist with Kentucky
Fish and Wildlife. “We really hope to in-
crease the size of the materials we’re using
now that we know some of the limitations of
the habitat barge and our crews.”
The first phase of the large-scale habitat
project created two nearly mile-long reefs
from Stoney Cove near the dam to Adam’s
Point and in the Clay Lick area in 2014.
Scott’s Creek, Warix Run and Zilpo Flats
are potential sites for the 2015 work, which
will improve another roughly two miles of
shoreline. Project leaders will take angler
preference into consideration before making
a final decision.
More information about the Cave Run
Lake habitat project, including a map that in-
cludes GPS coordinates for fish attracting
structures, is available on the Kentucky Fish
and Wildlife website.
New mentoring program: Learning to
fish can be an intimidating and frustrating
experience when you have little or no expe-
rience, and no one to coach you along. A new
mentoring program developed by Kentucky
Fish and Wildlife will strive to help acceler-
ate the learning curve.
The Angler’s Legacy program is slated
to launch this spring and will be geared to-
ward people ages 16 and older with limited
or no previous fishing experience. Skill-
building courses will range from basic to
complex. Information about the program will
be available online at fw.ky.gov.
“Our hope is that those who participate will
gain the technical skills and confidence to
adopt a lifelong fishing tradition,” said John
Gutzeit, Aquatics Education Administrator
for Kentucky Fish and Wildlife.

The schedule for the remainder of the regular season in the 13th Region
In the winter, one of the most comfort-
ing experiences after coming in from the
water or woods, is to warm by a
hot fire. Even in survival situations
a fire is said to not only provide
warmth but to give a sense of com-
fort. Over the years I have noticed
how watching a campfire mesmer-
izes those who sit around it. It has
a unique ability to draw individuals
to its stage and keep them there.
What has recently grabbed my at-
tention is how a stack of logs can be reduced
to such a small pile of ashes. It takes half of
a wall to hold the wood and only a bucket to
hold the ashes. I pondered that thought the
other day as I shoveled the remains of my
wood. Then I began to put the process in re-
verse. I imagined how my pile of ashes could
be turned into various forms of life. This
after all is the idea of macroevolution. It is
that all life forms evolved from the smallest
matter. The crux of the problem however, is
that this belief also affirms that this smallest
amount of matter accumulated from nothing.
This seems impossible unless you redefine
what “nothing” really means. What our athe-
istic friends are now saying is that nothing
really means something. In fact they will tell
you they have actually created something
from nothing. And while the very
statement is suspect, they forget it
is “they” who have done it. That is,
there was a “they” who started a
process. What most Christians be-
lieve however is that God created
out of nothing. He was the “they”
who started the process and He lit-
erally created from “no-thing.”
When the Hubble space tele-
scope showed that Einstein’s theory of rela-
tivity was correct, Einstein and everyone
then knew that time, space, and matter had a
beginning. And if time, space, and matter
had a beginning, then something outside of
time, space, and matter had to start the
process. This was a perfect place to recog-
nize God as the instigator of this wonderful
universe – the One who is outside time,
space, and matter. This would be too easy
however. Evidently it takes more faith to be-
lieve that God created the universe out of
nothing than to believe that nothing created
the universe out of nothing. I guess I just
don’t have enough faith to be an atheist.

LMU men’s basketball started the new year exactly the way they ended the old one by pick-
ing up another win. With the victory they improve to 13-0 on the 2014-15 season. Above,
Keenan Peterson (white uniform) had seven points and eight rebounds as the Railsplitters
knocked off Anderson 73-54. LMU took control of the game with a 25-8 run to close out
the first half with a double figure lead. Luquon Choice led the Railsplitters in scoring with
