A Closer LookState Champs on to Global Finals

Indian Creek High School’s Destination Imagination (DI) Team has won the State Tournament and been given the opportunity to travel to the University of Tennessee at Knoxville for the Global Competition in late May. At that level of competition they will compete against teams in their age bracket from 45 states and 9 countries . Entering with the nickname “The Pizza Knotz”, the team is entered into a Challenge requiring them to use scientific concepts to design and build an attraction used in amusement parks. Their challenge also requires them to present a story that features the attraction operating in an unlikely location.

Another component to the DI Program , the Instant Challenge, is done without an audience and involves the team solving an unknown challenge on the spot – with no prior knowledge of what will be required. At the state level, The Piazza Knotz took top place in their Instant Challenge. (L-R) Michael Buzzard, Abdul Ade, Owen Price, Shawn McClurg on to Knoxville, Tennessee. Good Luck!

Family Fun Night at Hills About 300 students, family, and friends attended the festivities at Hills Family Fun Night. Students traveled between classrooms to perform math and literacy activities, as well as craft activities. Among other activities, on hand were a bounce house, educational activities in classrooms, a Scholastic Book Fair in the Library, Mingo Police and EMS vehicles, and snacks in the cafeteria. Another attraction included the Jefferson County Board of Elections information booth. The booth included a touch-screen voting machine to help register voters. Superintendent Dr. T.C. Chappelear encouraged the elementary parents to vote this May. Passage of the 6.1 bond issue would provide funds for two new buildings in the district (Wintersville Elementary and Indian Creek High School) and updated renovations at Hills.

Wintersville Elementary Students Donate Chemo Bags

Students at Wintersville Elementary are helping cancer patients in their time of need by providing chemo care bags to the Tony Teramana Cancer Center. The school hosted center director Lynn Barbe and patient liaison Marsha Lewis where students presented 200 colorful tote bags full of items that the patients could use while undergoing treatment at the facility. The bags included snacks, puzzle books, lotion, blankets and other goodies, while children created homemade cards filled with sentiments. In addition coffee, tea, snacks and suckers were also donated to patients and their family members at the center, while the medical staff also received a basket of mints for their “commit-ment,” “encourage-mint,” “invest-mint,” and ‘involve-mint.”

Several students noted that it made them happy to bring some joy and comfort to others. For second grader Kyler Snyder, the matter hit very close to home. “It means a lot to me because my grandma had cancer, and it makes me feel like she’s still here.”
