Youth and Teens Day 2012 Youth and Teens Day 2012
Our service project this year is focused on the James R. Clark Sickle
Foundation. Sickle Cell is a common disease dominantly found in African
Americans. We are having a walk to honor those who have sickle cell, the
trait or the deceased in their memory. We will raise funds to donate to the
foundation at the end of Youth and Teens Day.
Next, our Teen Power Hour is another new event on our calendar this year.
We are using this event to allow Teens to challenge themselves and their
peers to grow a greater relationship with the Lord. Also, to rise above these
everyday trials and temptations we face in our generation. The event is
FREE! We would really like to have a great turn out so that as Teens we
can encourage each other.
We will also have a Master and Miss Brookland Pageant for Ages 5-12. We will have three different age
category titles of Tiny Master and Tiny Miss Brookland (Ages 5-6), Little Master and Little Miss Brookland
(Ages 7-9) and Junior Master and Junior Miss Brookland (Ages 10-12). The Registration Fee for the Pageant is
$20 and all the proceeds will be donated to the Sickle Cell Foundation. The divisions that the contestants will be
judged upon are Casual Wear, Questions Sector and Sunday’s Best Attire. Information Packets are available on
Sunday mornings at the Registration Tables and Online.
Also on our “Very Ambitious” Calendar as stated by Pastor Jackson, we have brought back our Skate Night and
it is better than EVER! Our Youth Movie Night is back and more comfortable as ever! We ask that the attire for
the Movie Night is appropriate Pajamas and bring your sleeping bags and enjoy the movie in absolute comfort!
Our new and improved Lock-In will consist of thrilling and adventurous activities to keep our Teens up ALL
NIGHT. We have tweaked our Trin-I-Tee gospel café, come out to see who will be the champion of the Choir
Sing-Out between local churches. We hope to see you there!
The 2012 Youth and Teens Day Committee Chairs are Ms. Keirsten Hoyle (381-3664) and Mr.
Jesse Williams (807-6732). Our Adult Advisors are Ms. Melanie Byrd (479-3884), Mr. William Bowman II
(465-0912), Ms. Marilyn Shine (586-2402), Rev. Nicky Wilson (467-7065), Dr. Kenneth Campbell (419-

Vacation Bible School Teen Class
“Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Matthew 4:19
During our week of Vacation Bible School, we spent time discussing praise and witnessing. We learned
that we can praise through song, dance, prayer, meditation, and lifting hands. We also talked about how we
can be ourselves around friends and how we don't have to change. For instance we, as teens, can talk to our
friends about going to church.
One class member shared her story. When my friend’s mother died, she had to go live with her sister. Her
sister made her dropout of school just to sit at home and watch her kids. I took her to church with me and
she ended up joining her cousin’s church. Now she is back in school and will graduate on time. She now
lives with her cousin and is doing very well.
Class members included Jordan Belgrave, C.J. Blume, Marquis Davis, Jonai McLean, Tiffany Ray, Charity
Jones, Lauren Woods, John Riley, Keirsten Hoyle, Austin Brooker, Nyheme Sumpter, Will Bowman,
Michael Pressley, Ricky Way, and Khalid Heatley.
Teachers: Cindy McIntee, Leverette Williams and Carlos Primus.

Summer Forum 2012
“Spiritually Networking: Connecting to God” John 17
Wednesday, July 25, 2012
8:00 AM - 4:30 PM
Fellowship Hall
The Brookland Counseling Ministry and Youth Department are sponsoring a forum in celebration of
Youth and Teens Day. This year’s forum focusing on mind, body and spirit has the goal of empowering youth
and their parents/caregivers in “Spiritually Networking: Connecting to God”.
Roundtable discussions, age appropriate open dialogue, role playing, and handouts will be utilized to
encourage involvement and to achieve this objective.
Our elementary-age males and females will learn about communicating through prayer, witnessing and
sharing at an early age as God’s messengers. Our teen males and females will discuss the benefits of being
spiritually healthy by taking scriptural vitamins A to Z and the joy of “feeling connected” to the highest
power. Our teens will also participate in a session on the role of politics and government, youth alcohol and
substance abuse prevention, bullying and violence prevention, what makes a relationship healthy, dating,
boundary issues, risky behaviors, abstinence and sex.
All youth ages 6 through 21 are invited to attend. There is no charge and lunch will be served.
Interested participants can sign up for The Youth & Teens Forum and Parenting Forum when registering for
Youth and Teens Day. For additional information, you may call:
Ms. Sharon Rice- Brown @ 803-609-8859 or [email protected]
Dr. Kenneth Campbell @ 803-419-7468 or [email protected]
Congratulations to Alaina Coates
Alaina Coates, who is a youth volunteer at the 8:15 AM Children’s worship at Brookland
Baptist, was recently named the Girls’ Athlete of the Year in the Midlands. During her
busy junior year, Miss Coates helped the Dutch Fork Silver Foxes claim the Class 4A girls
basketball title, started on the Dutch Fork volleyball team and placed fourth in the state in
the Class 4A shot put.
Described in a recent State newspaper article as a “strong, 6-foot-4 center”, this rising
senior is looking forward to a busy recruiting year and has set her sights on wining
championships or titles in multiple sports. Listed as one of the S.C. Basketball Coaches
Association’s Elite 5 players at the start of the 2011-12 season, Alaina currently is ranked fifth among post
players and 35th overall nationwide by ESPNU.com. This rising star with the bright athletic future is the
daughter of Gary, Sr and Pam Coates.

Financial Empowerment Sunday - July 15th
On the third Sunday in July, Ms. Marnie Robinson and her magazine, LINEN,
will be our featured business. She will have a table in the narthex of the main
sanctuary after both services on July 15th to display, discuss and sell her
magazine. Marnie currently serves as the Public Relations and Marketing
Director at Brookland Baptist Church.
Financial Empowerment Sunday (FES) is a monthly event that will feature
businesses owned by members of Brookland Baptist. FES is part of an ongoing
effort to promote African-American economic empowerment and all Brookland
worship service attendees are strongly encouraged to financially support these
featured businesses.
Please stop by Ms. Robinsons’ table in the narthex after worship service on July 15th.
Congratulations to Dr. Reginald A. Bess
Brookland Baptist member Dr. Bess served as the guest editor of Volume
XXIIII (Winter 2011) of The Zora Neale Hurston Forum. This is the first time
in the history of African Diasporic Studies that a special issue of a literary
journal has been devoted to Afro-German Literature/Studies. All the essayists
are African American professors who hold the doctorate degree in German.
Dr. Reginald A. Bess, chairperson of the Division of General Studies and
professor of Modern Languages at Morris College holds a Ph.D. in Medieval
German Studies from The Ohio State University. (He is the only African
American in the United States to hold such a doctorate.)

Celebrating 15 Years of Restoring Men to their Rightful Position
The mission of MUIC is for men to unite with one another for the purpose of developing a deeper love
for Christ, a proper understanding of his role in Christ and a rooted foundation in God’s word. MUIC is
committed to leading men back to their proper positions in their home, church and community.
Through His grace and His mercy, the Lord has allowed MUIC to embark on another decade and an half
of service to God, church and community. Our goal in 2012-13 is to have a bigger impact on males by
providing information to empower the entire family.
MUIC has sponsored several conferences and mini workshops in an effort to show and teach men their
rightful position. This year’s conference is scheduled for August 18, 2012 and it will be a one-day event
to be held at Brookland Banquet Conference Center, West Columbia, South Carolina. The conference
theme is “Celebrating 15 Years of Restoring Men to their Rightful Position.”
For additional information, please contact your Brookland MUIC Representative: Deacon Bill Randolph
