Members Present: Jean Balint, Guin Borstel,
Brad Briscoe, Tina Graham, Jen Haas, Debby
Knutson, Rick Knutson, Robert Lattuga, Kellee
Livingston, Marrianne Lu, Ed Odron, Mary
Jean Odron, Rick Ragan, Kim Robinson, Le-
nore Vogt.
The meeting was called to order at 3:10 PM by
President Briscoe.
The minutes as published in last issue of
SPEED were accepted by the members pre-
sent.
Officer's Reports
President's Report: Brad stated that 2014 has
been another successful year for the NCWFA.
He reported that we appear to have made mon-
ey on the November lure trials. Yay! Brad
asked MJ for a Specialty/Pleasanton recap. MJ
reported that we received a check for $302
from Del Valle for our portion of the entry
fees. Kellee reported that the raffle actually
made over $1500, since several checks came in
on Sunday. Racing also made lots of money for
the September events. Brad announced that
2015 will be his last year as President and his
last year being in charge of bringing the equip-
ment trailer to events. Obviously the Club will
be looking for a member or several members
who are willing and able to bring the trailer to
future events. Ed stated that this gives new
people the opportunity to help the Club and
help with events. It also means we have a tran-
sition period of one year to make sure that
there is a member/members who are trained in
transporting the trailer to our two racing week-
ends (June & September), our two lure cours-
ing weekends (June & November), and the
Specialty (October).
Secretary's Report: No report.
Treasurer's Report: Kellee reported that the
Club has over $18 K in the main account. We
have around $3000 in the PayPal account. A
full report will appear in the January/February
SPEED.
Committee Reports
Coursing: In Russell's absence Brad reported
on the November weekend. The weekend was
successful, both in terms of entries (up) and in
terms of finances (we made money). Saturday
had bad weather, but we had 32 QC/JC entries
on top of over 60 competitive entries, which is
up from last year. Ed reported that he looked
at the corresponding date calendar and in 2015
San Joaquin KC will once again be the week-
end before Thanksgiving. If we will put on a
November event in 2015, we should move it to
the week before its corresponding date, so as to
prevent conflicts. The Saluki Club wishes to
support the entry at our next event. Discussion
ensued regarding the Saluki involvement, and
all in all, it was decided that their support is
positive, especially in terms of entries. The first
coursing event of 2015 is scheduled for the
third weekend in June. Brad and Russell will be
looking at some new fields in January. Russell
resigning from his position as Coursing chair-
person, due to increased work commitments.
The Club is seeking a person who is willing to
take on this position. A full job description will
appear in the next issue of SPEED.
Show: Mary Jean reported that our Breed
Judge for 2015 is Katrina Hamilton, with Curtis
Freeling doing our puppy and veteran sweep-
stakes. We do not know yet who will be judging
the breed at Skyline KC or at the DelValle KC
on Sunday.
Racing: Jean will book dates for 2015. Jean is
training a new race secretary. Jean mentioned
that there are changes coming to the CWA
program. There is a proposal up for a vote that
will require a show champion on both sides of
a three or four generation pedigree. If this pass-
es it will impact some of the dogs eligible to
race in the program. Discussion ensued about
holding a race practice in January, maybe the
weekend before GGKC (1/17-18). Jean will
check out the field to make sure it is available.
Rescue: Kellee reported on the hoarder in
Redding. We are working with animal control
and we will get his dogs at some point, as the
dogs will be taken away legally. AC has assured
us they will go to whippet rescue and not that
wacky all-breed rescue group up there. Guin
reminded all that the position of Rescue Coor-
dinator is still open. A job description will ap-
pear in the next issue of SPEED.
SPEED: Guin reported that the next issue will
be coming out in early January.
Website: Guin noted that there are buttons on
the homepage where members can pay their
dues, which are currently due.
Whippetbilia: Marrianne reported that she sold
$300 at the Specialty weekend.
Old Business: The 50th Anniversary celebra-
tion that was announced at the October meet-
ing is still in its very embryonic planning stages.
Guin, Kellee and Debby will work on it and
have a more concrete presentation at the Feb-
ruary meeting.
New Business: Brad handed out the Award
plaques. The next meeting is scheduled for
2/15 in San Jose in conjunction with the Santa
Clara Valley KC show. The meeting was ad-
journed at 4:16 PM.

On August 8th 2008, Miss Darcy gave birth to six puppies that were sired by Loughren's Southern Comfort. She had four brin-
dle boys and two parti bitches. The first brindle puppy was named Zuri and he
went to Marie and Barry Clark, the owner of the stud dog. The second one, Rafa,
went to Lisa Ochoa and Pat Reynolds. The third puppy, Ziggy, went to Connie
Austin and Ule James. I kept the two parti girls. So there was one small and very
shy puppy left. ( I think that is why he was left.) At the NCWFA Specialty two
very nice people approached me because they heard I had a puppy for sale. Their
names were Barbara and Babak Kusha. They came to my house with their sons to
see this little shy puppy. The minute he saw them he rushed over and greeted
them warmly. He was no longer shy. That day he went home to live with them
and they named him The Mighty Bolt.
Due to an health issue in the family when he was about six months old Bolt came
to stay with me. During his stay I took him to race practice where he showed a lot of potential to be a good racer. He later
went back to his owners and then again, due to more health issues, he came back to me for a couple more months, at which
time I completed his training. When he finally went back to his owners I asked if I could occasionally take him to race and they
graciously agreed.
The rest if the story is easy to tell, Bolt became a star. His first event was an oval meet. He tied for the meet win with Jitterbug,
who was the top oval racer in the country. He soon got his oval championship. Then I started running him at the CWA meets.
He ran in a total of 25 meets and won them all. He also won three CWA Nationals. He earned his Supreme race title in 2013.
He also won the NCWC's Top Racer award in 2012. This past September his owners and I decided to retire him from racing
while he was still on top.
Bolt was a star but so were his litter mates. Each one of them had at least two performance championships. Some even had
three and some four. They earned enough titles for Miss
Darcy to be recognized by the American Whippet Club
and awarded her ROM. This is not easy to attain from
one litter. I am very, very proud of them all and thank
each of their owners for the time and effort they put into
campaigning their once little brindle puppies.
I am sure Bolt will miss racing, I know I will miss taking
him to the races. Thank you, Barbara, Babak, Darius,
and Cyrus for letting me have five years of joy and fun
running this great Whippet. I would also like to thank
Kellee Livingston who is the co-breeder of this outstand-
ing litter.

As many of you are aware, I have been
NCWFA Rescue Team Coordinator for over
seven years. Over this time I have enjoyed
working with my fellow Club members to
help whippets-in-need find new homes and
matching up great people with great dogs.
However, I am currently our parent club's
Secretary, as well as the AWC "Whippet
News" editor (a monthly magazine that goes
out to all AWC members and subscribers all
over the world), which in addition to my
usual duties as NCWFA Secretary and News-
letter Editor is keeping me very, very busy. I
must divest myself of some of my duties in
order to keep what little remains of my sani-
ty! :) Now is a great time to give someone else
in the NCWFA the opportunity to give back
to the breed we all love in the capacity of
NCWFA Rescue Coordinator.
You may have heard me make reference to
the NCWFA Rescue Team and wondered
who these people are? The Team consists of
an ad-hoc and varying group of your fellow
Club members who all work together to
make the business of whippet rescue work.
Most members have not even been aware
that they have been part of a “Team”- they
just have stepped up when the need arose to
help out with different aspects of the rescue
process. I see no reason why this system
cannot continue under a new Coordinator.
Spreading around duties makes any task less
onerous and certainly makes everything easi-
er! Some members volunteer to foster whip-
pets-in-need, some members transport rescue
dogs from their old homes to foster care or
their new homes, some members are willing
to visit shelters to check out those dogs who
are listed as "whippets", some field telephone
calls and email inquiries about rescue, and
still others do home checks to make sure that
rescue whippets and their new homes are a
great fit. Over the last seven years I can hon-
estly say that most of our members have
done a bit of rescue work at one time or
another.
As you can see from the above list of what
the "Team" does, the Coordinator position is
truly that - a coordinator who makes sure that
all these different helpers function in an effi-
cient fashion in order to find future rescues
forever homes. The NCWFA Rescue Team
Coordinator is also the 'face' of Rescue,
meaning you will be in charge of answering e-
mail inquiries and the rare phone inquiry the
program receives.
Over the last seven years, we have averaged
four rescue whippets per year, which works
out to less than one every three months.
During that same time period, we received
over 100 rescue adoption applications. Due
to this imbalance, far more of my time as
Coordinator has been spent matching
adopters with non-rescue whippets; breeder
rehomes or older dogs who were returned to
their breeder, than dealing with bonafide
rescues. This is one of the wonderful things
about our breed - almost all of our breeders
are wonderful about taking back their pups at
any time. Yes, about every ten years or so, we
have a dramatic, over-the-top, BIG rescue
situation, but these are extremely rare!
The job of NCWFA Rescue Team Coordi-
nator consists of the following duties:
1. Answering e-mail inquiries and responding
to Rescue Adopter Applications which come
in to our Rescue e-mail address
[email protected]. About 90% of
contact with potential adopters and those
who wish to surrender their whippets comes
through e-mail now. So a proactive attitude
about answering e-mails is a necessary com-
ponent of the job. I have really good boiler-
plate replies saved for the most frequent e-
mail inquiries that we receive, so there is a
“library” of pre-written replies ready to go for
most situations.
2. Coordinating shelter visits to check out
possible whippets. There is a website,
www.petharbor.com, on which all animal
shelters in the state post their stray and sur-
rendered dogs, most of the time with photos,
so unlike the old days, we almost never have
to go out to a shelter to look at a "whippet"
who ends up being a starved Boxer or a Pit
Bull with rose ears. Thanks to Pet Harbor,
on which you can set up automatic alerts to
notify you via e-mail of any "whippets" who
come in, the incidence of shelter visits is so
much lower than years past. Over the past
seven years, there have been less than 15
shelter visits made.
3. Liaising with our local breed rescue groups
(greyhound and IG rescue), as well as with
WRAP in the rest of California, Oregon, and
Nevada. These groups are a valuable source
of information and help with the Team's
work. Greyhounds: Friends for Life, Norcal
IG Rescue, and our whippet rescue compatri-
ots in WRAP can help with shelter and home
checks, as well as pull dogs from shelters for
us. We are able to "turf out" rescue inquires
that come in from areas where WRAP oper-
ates, which means that whippets-in-need in
Central and Southern California, the south-
ernmost portions of the Central Valley, and
northern Nevada can be directed to their
closest WRAP rep and not have to be dealt
with through NCWFA Rescue. Of course,
almost all of our contact with these groups
comes through e-mail nowadays.
4. Coordinating foster homes from amongst
our members and non-member possible
foster homes. Coordinating the transport of
rescue whippets between foster and new
homes, and from the surrendering home,
also if needed.
5. Coordinating medical care for rescue
whippets and abiding by the financial limits
set for medical care by the Board. Medical
expenses over $250.00 must be approved by
the Board. We have some great local vets we
have worked with for vetting.
6. Coordinating potential adopter interviews
and home checks. We have Club members
all over Northern California who are willing
to do home checks, and can utilize our
friends in WRAP for vetting out-of-the-area
placements.
If you are interested in taking on the position
of Rescue Coordinator, please contact Guin
Borstel. This could certainly be a job that a
few interested members could take on as a
Team.
9
Lure Coursing Coordinator is a very important position within the NCWFA. We all enjoy our lure coursing
events each year, and the Club Treasury is fattened by successful coursing weekends. Of course, we need a mem-
ber to spearhead putting on these events, or else there would be coursing chaos! Russell has successfully headed
this position for the last few years, but he will need to step away in 2015, due to increasing personal (outside of
whippets) commitments. So, the Club is seeking an enthusiastic, organized member to take over the position of
Lure Coursing Coordinator in 2015 and going forward. Your Board of Directors is aware that there is a signifi-
cant aura of mystery surrounding many of the aspects that make up the tasks of the Coursing Coordinator job.
Here is a listing of the tasks that make up this position, which will hopefully show the actual amount of work
that it takes to do this job, and encourage a member or members to contact President Brad Briscoe with their
intention to take on this position.
As Lure Coursing Coordinator, the following tasks need to completed and/or delegated for completion for each
event/event weekend we put on:
1. confirm and secure availability of an appropriate coursing field.
2. hire judges for event.
3. apply for AKC approval for events several months before the weekend.
4. complete premium list, including setting deadlines for entry (there is a template for this).
5. secure volunteers /key workers for event.
6. keep record of insurance available to owner of field.
7. process entries as received (there is an Excel spreadsheet set up for this).
8. confirm that equipment trailer will be brought to the event.
9. rent outdoor restrooms (if needed).
10. confirm that ribbons, prizes, and judges gifts are available at event.
11. organize entries for event (check in sheet, scoresheets, JC/QC forms – there is also a spreadsheet for these.)
12. deliver checks to NCWFA Treasurer after the event.
13. finalize and send completed scoresheets to AKC after the event.
14. Overall, be an ambassador for our club and for AKC lure coursing.
And most important, make sure the event is fun – after all, we are there for the dogs.
If you are interested in taking on this job, or discussing it in more detail, please contact
President Brad Briscoe.
