Cromford Canal was built by William Jessop andBenjamin Outram and ran from Cromford toLangley Mill. Limestone, Coal and Cotton were themain goods carried on this canal which opened in1794.

Followthepathallthewaytotheroadbeware of traffic.TurnrighttogounderthebridgeandcontinuealongtheroadtocomeintoHammersmith.Justafterpassingunderthenextbridgeturnrighttotakethetarmacpath.Thisleadsyouundertheoldrailwaybridge.Shortlyaftertherailwaybridgethetarmacpathbendstotheright.Donotgototherightbuttakethepathstraightahead.ThisleadstotheSirBarnesWallisRecreationArea.

Sir Barnes Wallis was born in Butterley. He is mostfamous for his invention of the bouncing bombwhich breached German dams in the Ruhr Valleyin 1943. Take time to look at the superb views.On a clear day Crich stand is visible in thedistance. The monument is dedicated to themembers of the Worcestershire and SherwoodForester Regiment who gave their lives in the twoWorld Wars.

9. Continueupthefieldandthenkeeptotheleftofthehedgetocomeuptheleftsideofthechildren’splayingarea.Continueupthehillpassingtheseatingarea.AtMoseleyStreetturnright.ThisleadsyouupthehilltoRipleyMarketPlace,wheretheTownHallislocated.

Ripley is an old market town, with a rich industrialheritage. Most famously, the Butterley Companywho built St. Pancras in London and more recentlythe Falkirk Wheel, the world’s first rotating boat lift.

WalkdownShirleyRoadwhichleadsontoschoolLane.FollowthepathbyCrossleyParkuntilyoureachthejunction.FollowDerwentRoadtojunction.TurnleftandthenatthenextjunctionturnleftontoKenilworthRoad.Crosstheroadandcontinueleftalongtheroad,untilyoureachtheSirBarnesWallispub.Takethetrackleadingdowntheright-handsideoftheSirBarnesWallispub.Continuethroughthegate.Justpastthelastbrickhouse(SandhamFarm)turnlefttogothroughthekissinggate.Continuealongthepath(attimesalittleuneven)keepingthestreamonyourleft.GostraightonoverthestilewiththelargeFieldMapletreenexttoit.Atthenextstileheaddiagonallyleftupthehilltothegatewithastile.Gooverthestileandheadstraightacrossthemiddleofthefieldtoanotherstileinthehedge.Gooverthatoneandstraightacrossthenextfieldtothestile.CrossStreetLanebeware of trafficandturnleftandthenshortlyrightdownthetracktowardsMorleyParkFarm.

2. Afterpassingunderthebridge,turnrightandgothroughthegate.

Street Lane forms part of Ryknild Street; a RomanRoad that linked Derventio (now part of Derby) toTempleborough (Sheffield). Look behind youto see the remains of the 18th century ironfoundries adjacent to the A38.

Gothroughthesqueezestileandheadupthehillkeepingtotherightedgeofthefield,ignoringthegapinhedge.Atthegate,gothroughandoverthestileandheadupthefieldtothesqueezestile,withthehedgeonyourleft.Oncethroughthesqueezestileturnrightandthengothroughfarmgateontomainroad.Crosstheroadbeware of trafficthenturnleft.TakethefootpathtotheleftofYewTreeCottageFarm.FollowthetarmactrackleadingtoFieldFarm.Continuealongtrackpastthefarm,andatmetalgatetakestileontheright.Continuedownthehilloverthreefields.

This footpath follows the former route ofRyknild Street.

4. Atthefarmtrack,turnright.Turnleftandheaddownthehill,keepingthehedgeonyourrightforabout20yards(18m)andcrossthehiddenstilethroughthetrees.Bearleftandfollowthefieldboundarydownhilltoastile.Headstraightacrossthemiddleofthenextfield,crossthestileandonceagainpickupthehedgeonyourleft.

5. Turnleftthroughawicketgateandheadtowardsbuildings.Passtotheleftofthehousethroughcopse.Takestileonrightinhedgetoenterlawnedgarden.Crossgardenontodriveway.Followdrivewaytotheroad,emergingneartheformerGateInn(CromfordCanalisonyourleft).Attheroad,turnleftandwalkforapproximately200yards.Crosstheroadandtakethefootpath,whichleadsyouonatarmacpaththatrunsthroughthemiddleofafield,stillfollowingRyknildStreet.

6. Crossthemainroadbeware of very fast traffic.Turnrightandthenleftbeforebusstoptofootpathsign.Followthepathwhichrunsbetweenthetwohedges.ContinuethroughgateandalongthetrackallthewaytoFieldsFarm.Afterthefarmgooverstiletotakethe

pathonyourright.(IfyoucontinuestraightonalongthetrackyouwillcomeintoPentrichvillage.)

Pentrich is a delightful village well worth a visit.Historically it is important as the scene of thePentrich Revolution in 1817. The uprising was ledby Jeremiah Brandreth and was part of a muchwider unrest. The rebels were caught and 3 menwere sentenced to death for high treason. Manyothers were transported.
