WASTE MANAGEMENT
What is the waste Management?
The process of collecting, transporting, processing and disposing of waste is known as waste management.
Type of Waste
General solid waste Bio Medical waste
1. Paper 1. Cotton
2. Polythene 2. Swabs
3. Food waste 3. Infection plastics
4. Kitchen waste 4. Plastics
5. Garden waste 5. Glass, syringes,
Glass, blades
General solid waste: The general waste can be further classified into 2 Types.General solid waste
Recyclable waste Bio- Degradable1. Cardboard 1. Dust2. Paper 2. Food waste3. Plastic bottle, covers & cups 3. Kitchen waste4. Ropes & strings 4. Garden waste 5. Rubber items 5. Coal and ash 6. Shoes & Slippers 6. Hair 7. Thermocol 7. Insects and rodents 8. Wood 8. Tea & coffee powder 9. Coconut shells, cloth piece 9. Egg
On People On Environment
1.Infections 1. Water Pollution2.Physical injury 2. Air pollution3.Chemical injury 3. Soil Pollution
4.Radiation
Impact of poor waste management systems:
Waste Generation: -1.Collection2.Segregation3.Storage4.Transportation
Collection: -
Collection of hospital waste is the process, which is done after segregation, and in a way, both can be considered as being complementary to each other.
Several guidelines have been suggested for categorization of hospital waste enunciated by various authorities. One of these is the color coded classification for developing countries.
S.No Category of Waste Recommended color code

General Non-hazardous wasteSharps (infected or not)Infected waste (not containing sharps)Chemical and pharmaceutical waste(other than cytotoxic drugs, radioactive wastes, high pressure containers)Clinical wastes that need autoclaving

Segregation of Waste: - Segregation of waste is defined as separation of different types of wastes by sorting. Segregation of waste should be done at source, and hence becomes the responsibility of the generators of waste. Sensitizing the generators of waste to properly segregate the waste at source is the key to successful implementation of scientific waste management; It is important t put the waste in respective co lour bin which is accepted by the management
Storage: -
Storage is the duration of time the wastes are kept in the areas of generation and transit, till the point of disposal. One should be very careful about storage, as unless the waste is securely stored, unscrupulous elements and rag pickers may gain access to the waste and cause problem. Biomedical waste shall be stored beyond a period of 48 hours.
Transportation:-
Waste disposal is a multiphase activity, in which the different stages. (Generation, Segregation, collection, storage, transportation, treatment an
final Disposal.
Types of transportation:- Internal External1.Push cart 1..Cycle rickshaw2. Waste trolley 2. Van3. Wheel barrow 3. Lorry
Final Disposal: - Disposal means burial, Discharge, deposit, dumping, land-filling or placing on land, of any biomedical waste.
Tips to good waste management practices
•Segregation (at the point of generation)
•Disinfection
•Management of sharps
•Ensuring proper training of the staff
