Summary
TheMissionBeachWastewaterTreatmentPlant(WWTP)initiatedafieldtrialofBiOWiSH™ Aqua FOGtoevaluatethereductionofsludgegeneratedfromtheirfacilityinWashington.PriortotheapplicationofBiOWiSH™ Aqua FOG,theMissionBeachWWTPwasspendinginexcessof$100,000peryeartoremovebiosolidsfromthefacilityandtohaulittoalandfill.Inaddition,effluentturbidityreducedtheeffectivenessoftheultraviolet(UV)disinfectionsystem.Afterthetrial,BiOWiSH™ Aqua FOGreducedsludgegenerationfromthesystembyover91%,basedontankertrucksludgehaulingvolumes.Asaresult,sludgehaulingbecamelessfrequent,fromeverytwotothreedaystoonceamonth.Plantoperatorsalsoobservedareductionineffluentturbidity,whichresultsinimproveddisinfectionoftheeffluentdischarge.
Background
TheMissionBeachWWTPislocatedinSnohomishCounty,WashingtonwestoftheCityofMarysvilleinaresidentialdevelopment.Ownedandoperatedbytheregionalcouncil,theWWTPsystemincludesover32kmofreticulationandcollectionsystempiping,11pumpstationsand45kmofrisingmainsandislocatedinsandy,highgroundwaterconditions.
Therearenoindustrialcontributorstothewastewatercollectionandtreatmentsystem.SeveralcommercialfacilitiesdischargesewagetothisWWTP;otherwise,allotherusersareresidential.Thesystemisoperatingwell,andthefinaltreatedeffluentiswithinpermittedeffluentdischargeconditions.Sludgeiswastedtoanaerateddigestertankandcollectedforhaulingonan“asneeded”basistoanauthorizedsludgetreatmentfacility.

Objectives
TheWWTPfacilitywasexperiencingsignificantcostsduetothequantityofsludgegenerationattheplant.Additionally,turbidityintheplanteffluentwasaffectingtheeffectivenessoftheUVdisinfectionprocess.Twootherminorissuesweretreatmentcapacityandprocessstability.Giventheseissuesthefieldtrialwasinitiatedwiththefollowingobjectivesinmind:
• Cutcostsassociatedwithsludgepumpoutrequirements
• Reduceeffluentturbidity
• Reducesludgevolumeforenhancedtreatmentcapacity
• Improveprocessstabilitydespiteloadandflowvariations
Solution
BiOWiSH™ Aqua FOGwasusedtoenhancethebiologicalconversionefficiencyoftheactivatedsludgetreatmentprocess.Asaresultoftheimprovedconversionefficiencythecellulargrowthratewasreducedandthustherewascorrespondingreductionofbiosolidsgeneratedfromtheaerationbasin.Themixed-liquorsuspendedsolids(MLSS)weremaintainedatpre-BiOWiSH™concentrations(approximately2,200to4,500mg/L)bymaintainingtheappropriatereturnactivatedsludge(RAS)flowrate.Asaresultofthereducedbiosolidsproduction,thewasteactivatedsludge(WAS)flowratewasreducedapproximately50-60%,basedonoperatorobservations(WASflowwasnotrecorded).TheWASflowwassenttoanaerateddigestertankwhereadditionalreductionofthesolidsoccurred.Duringsludgeremoval,thedigesteraeratorswereturnedoffandsludgedecantedtomaximizesolidsremovalandtominimizethehaulingofexcesswater.

Results
Sludge Reduction
Thefacilityexperiencedslightlyover91%reductionintotalsludgevolumegeneration,asshowninFigure3.Sludgegenerationvolumewascalculatedfromthesludgehaulingrate,witheachsludgehaulingeventrepresentingapproximately3,300gallonsofsludge.Thesludgehaulingtruckwasalwayspumpedfullofsludgeduringeachremoval.Thesludgegenerationratewascalculatedbydividingthepumpedsludgevolumebytheamountoftimerequiredtogeneratethesludge.
Itappearsthattherequiredsludgeremovalwillbereducedfrom140timesperyeartoapproximately10to12timesperyear.Asaresult,significantreductionsinoperatingcostswerenoted.PriortotheapplicationofBiOWiSH™,theMissionBeachWWTPwasspendinginexcessof$100,000peryeartoremovebiosolidsfromthefacilityandtohaulittoalandfill.Annualproductcostsareestimatedtobeapproximately$44,000peryear,andthecapitalcostsofthedrumsandtubingwerearound$6,000.Overallreductioninsludgehaulingcostsareexpectedtobeapproximately$85,000(duetosomeminorfixedhaulingcosts),withanapproximatepaybackperiodof6weeks.

digestion in the aerobic digesters, and improved settling during the sludge decant stage.

Treatment Stability and Effluent Conditions
TheWWTPwasalreadyrunninganefficienttreatmentprocessandsotherewasonlyminorimprovementineffluentBODandTSS.Howevertheplantoperatorsnotedsignificantreductionineffluentturbidity.EffluentpHwasalsonotedtobemoreconsistentwhichhasaddedstabilitytotheoveralloperation.
Conclusion
BiOWiSH™ Aqua FOGwasfoundtobeveryeffectiveinmeetingalltheobjectives.ItactedasapowerfulbiocatalysttoimprovethebiologicaltransformationoftheinfluentBOD,andthusreducethesludgevolumegeneration.TurbidityreductionwasobservedintheeffluentafterapplicationoftheBiOWiSH™product.Significantreductionsinsludgegenerationwerenotedandthetruckloadscarryingsludgeoffsitewerereduced.
BiOWiSH™ Aqua FOGhasbeensuccessfulinsimilarapplicationsandhasdemonstratedasignificanttrackhistoryofprocessenhancementattreatmentplantsaroundtheworld.Ithasprovenrecordofbenefitinreductionsinsolidsandsludgebulkingissues.Itsignificantlyimprovestheefficiencyofaerobictreatmentsystems,dissolvedairflotationunits,oilwaterseparatorsandgreasetraps.
Implementation Program
GreenBioSolutions,anauthorizedBiOWiSH™distributor,ledthetechnologyroll-outattheMissionBeachWWTP.BiOWiSH™ Aqua FOGwasdosedtotheaerationchannel.DosingwasdecidedbasedontheflowrateandBODload.Forproductactivation,two55gallondrums(asshowninFigure5)wereused.Theactivationperiodwas24hoursandconstanttemperaturewasmaintainedbetween65-70oF.Submersibleheaterswereusedtomaintaintheconstanttemperatureduringthewintermonths.Theinitialdosingplanwastorequiredosing4kgperdayofBiOWiSH™ Aqua FOGfor5days,afterwhichthedosagewastobereducedto1kgperday,respectivelyequivalentto3.52mg/Land0.88mg/L,basedonflowrate.Theambienttemperatureatinitiationwasabout50degreeF.However,byday3thetemperaturehaddroppedtoabout20degreesFandbasedonobservingtheactivatedsludgetheactivationwasnotgoingasplanned.Ittook2daystoobtaindrumheaters.Inthose2daystheoperatorsdosed1kgperdayintothesystem,thenwentbacktotheshockdosephaseof4kgperdayforanother3days.
