INTRODUCTIONSome Observations on Emerging Web
Technologies: They are collaborative, interactive and dynamic in
nature. The line between the creation and consumption of
content has blurred. Web is evolving into a more interactive, multi-media
driven technological space being termed as Web 2.0. Web 2.0, essentially, is not a web of textual publication,
but a web of interactive communication. “Web 2.0” was reportedly first conceptualized and made popular by Tim O'Reilly and Dale Dougherty of O'Reilly Media in 2004.
COMPONENTS OF WEB2.0
Web 2.0 encompasses any type of new content creation technologies such as:
Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts, Video Sharing, Photo Sharing, Web Page Creation, Social Book Marking, Cell Phones, I-pods and other technologies that will be invented in future.
APPLICATION OF WEB 2.0 FOR LIBRARIES
BLOGS: blog is short for web log.
As a communication tool.
As a continuous feedback tool.
As a professional awareness tool for the staff.
APPLICATION OF WEB 2.0 FOR LIBRARIES
WIKIS: originating from the Hawaiian term for quick, is an open shared space for collaborative content contribution and editing. Wiki as a service can provide a platform for
social interaction amongst librarians as well as patrons.
Wikis support multi-media environment, thus making it a potential virtual multimedia room for the library.
APPLICATION OF WEB 2.0 FOR LIBRARIES
RSS FEEDS :RSS is a piece of XML coding which stands for rich site summary or really simple syndication. RSS feeds can be incorporated into library
catalogues and journal databases to inform users of new publications acquired, news and latest events about the library.
APPLICATION OF WEB 2.0 FOR LIBRARIES
INSTANT MESSAGING: Instant messaging allows online, real time communication between two or more people using typed text sent via computers. Can be used as a powerful tool for bringing
reference service to the desktop of its patrons. This service is designed to provide:
Brief answers to factual questions.Suggest appropriate sources and research
strategies. Help with remote access and library policy issues.
APPLICATION OF WEB 2.0 FOR LIBRARIES
PODCASTS AND VODCASTS Can be used as training tools for awareness
and effective use of library’s online resources. To provide updates about the library collection
and services. To preserve and disseminate recordings of
important events, presentations, lectures etc. To provide a virtual tour of library. Can be used as an effective tool for marketing
of library products and services.
WEB 2.0 :TRANSFORMING LIBRARIES TO LIBRARY 2.0
The implications of the web 2.0 are enormous.Libraries can innovatively use these technologies
to outreach its clients and potential clients. The applications of Web 2.0 technologies to
library services and collections are being broadly termed as Library 2.0.
CONCLUSION
The use of Web 2.0 technologies is going to change service delivery of libraries in near future.
The library's digital collection is going to change, becoming interactive and easily accessible.
Web 2.0 technologies and the theory of Library 2.0 help libraries in focusing on information literacy and easy access.
The Library 2.0 approach allows libraries to better serve the existing patrons and to reach out to the potential users.
Thank You.
