WEEK 3 INSTRUCTIONS
This week you will be working on two different units: Phonology and Functions. There aredifferent sections and tasks proposed for each of these units. The deadline for this work is April19th.

UNIT 1.3 PHONOLOGY
In unit 1.3 Phonology you will be expanding your knowledge on terminology to describe differentelements of pronunciation. Also, you will become familiar with phonemic script.
There are six sections in this unit:
1. Features of phonology
2. Sounds and symbols
3. The phonemic chart
4. Stress
5. Connected speech and intonation6. Pronunciation and teaching
Features of phonology will give you the opportunity to expand your knowledge on terminology
related to phonology an exercise and understand how these concepts are related in the System
of sounds resource.
Sounds and symbols offers two exercises to better understand how sound-to-spelling
correspondence works in English. Print the document Sounds and symbols, hear the recordings
in Sounds and symbols resource, and compare your answers in Sound and symbols: sample
answers. Also, participants will contribute to the wiki Content words to account for stress oncontent/full/lexical vs functional/empty/grammatical words. Also, participants will do the exercise
Similar rhythms which helps you notice how stressed words provide rhythm to phrases and
sentences. Finally, the optional activity in the resource Poems and sentence stresswill help you
reflect on how integrate sentence stress into your lessons using authentic material.
Participants will become familiar with the phonemic chart in The Phonemic Chart by interacting
with the resource Phonemic chart, answering the questions in the document Phonemic chart
and checking their answers in the document Phonemic chart: answers.

In the Stress section all the participants will work out the activity in the resource Stress patterns.
It will help you notice how important word and sentence stress is to convey meaning. Besides,
you will the chance to improve your knowledge on the importance of intonation to convey
meaning by reading the document Intonation.
Finally, in the Pronunciation and teaching section, participants will check their understanding
of the concepts raised so far in the exercise Phonology: true or false. Also, they will have the
opportunity to discuss the role of pronunciation in language teaching in the forum Pronunciation
and teaching discussion. Theres an optional activity that invites you to check out the websites in
the Phonology practice websites discussion forum.
Dont forget to record your thoughts on how your view on pronunciation has changed after
working out the activities in this unit.
UNIT 1.4 FUNCTIONS
In unit 1.4 Functions, there are two sections, which will help you understand the concept
language of functions, better select language to fulfill communicative purposes more effectively,
and to gain knowledge on the formality and appropriacy of functional language according to the
context where it is used:
1. Functions and exponents
2. Formality and appropriacy
Functions and exponents will help you become very aware of how language forms (exponents)
serve communicative purposes (functions) through the exercise what do they mean? and the
wiki Functions and exponentswhere you will contribute with common situations and exponents
to the list of functions given. You will have to go to the forum Which group am I in? to find out the
wiki you have to participate in.
In Formality and appropriacy, participants will have the opportunity to reflect on how functions
and exponents change according to the context of use. In the forum Fancy a drink?, you will post
your comments,
Remember your deadline for this unit isApril 19th.
