From the PrincipalCelebrating AchievementOn Wednesday morning of this week the College conducted an assembly to recognise the outstanding academic achievement of many of our students during the first semester. Certificates of Excellence were presented to a number of boys from each Year level in recognition of their diligence and aptitude. Many of the parents and family members of our award winners were present, and it is always pleasing to have all sectors of our community represented at the one event.
In my address to the boys, I spoke about the importance of hard work in the process of developing our gifts into talents. It is not appropriate for anyone to take credit for their natural ability, as this is simply a result of God’s largesse. It is when we seek to maximise
this ability through factors such as consistent application, making discerning judgements and cooperating with others, that a person may achieve a sense of pride. These are traits that characterise the individual and are ‘under our control’. It is in this regard that improvement and achievement are equally accessible to all.
There were two particular students recognised individually for further achievement at our assembly. The first was Ben Anandappa (Year 12) who was presented with a bronze medal which he had gained at the International Chemistry Olympiad in Moscow last month. This recognition of Ben’s ability, amongst the best Chemistry students in the world, is a remarkable accolade. The second presentation was made to Nicholas Funga (Year 9) to acknowledge his selection in the ACC All Stars Cross Country team.

This is also a marvellous achievement and worthy recognition of Nick’s talent and hard work.
As part of the assembly I challenged all of the boys to consider for what reason each of them would be recognised at one of our gatherings in the future. They each have gifts and talents and we look forward to celebrating them over the course of this semester and in the years to come.
Performing Arts FestivalOn Wednesday evening of this week, a large number of our students took part in the Catholic Schools’ Performing Arts Festival as members of our Big Band or Jazz Orchestra. It is always pleasing to see the dedication and development of these young musicians and their performances were suitably acclaimed by the adjudicator on the night.
Earlier this week we were also advised that the Guitar Ensembles 1 and 2 had
received an Honourable Mention and Certificate of Merit respectively as part of the Festival. Congratulations to the students involved in these groups.
Promoting the Arts is an important function of all schools and is particularly critical in a boys’ College such as CBC. I know that our music parents appreciate the selfless work undertaken in this regard by Mr Shane Mancuso and all of the other staff in the Arts Learning Area. There are many opportunities made available to the boys in the areas of Music, Art and Drama and I commend those students who involve themselves so enthusiastically in these activities.

Term 2 Rite Journey learning was put to
the test during the July holidays when
Matt Moreno and Nic Funga (both in Year
9) joined forces to put on a three course
meal at the Moreno’s house.
Parents and siblings sat down to a
dinner for nine, and what a culinary
delight it was.
The afternoon started when Gabe (Matt’s
dad) escorted the boys to Garden City to
shop for all the ingredients, followed by
frantic preparation amid lots of joviality.
At the perfectly set dinner table each
adult was greeted with a printed menu.
Starting with a range of cheeses and
dips, together with a very tasty grilled
chorizo sausage on crispy Turkish bread,
we tucked in while the boys were at the
coal-face putting the finishing touches to
the main course.
And what a main course it was –
spaghetti marinara and seafood fried rice
accompanied with a green salad. A select
wine was the great finishing touch for the
parents’ taste buds.
Well pleased with the effort thus far, we
were treated to watching Matt and Nic
dress the most magnificent Pavlova with
fresh fruit and non-alcoholic jelly shots.
What a sensational effort from both boys.
After a second helping even siblings were
begging for more, but there was not a
scrap left.
The parents enjoyed coffee to finish up
while taking great pleasure in watching
the two lads load the dishwasher and
wipe down the kitchen amid much
complaining. This was clearly not the
most fun part of the evening for them.
Sadly, the evening was all over far too
quickly. The best thing is, we know Matt
& Nic certainly enjoyed this task. Now we
know how capable they are, they will not
be getting away so easy in the future.
Great job boys and a huge thank you to
Mr Adrian Correia for preparing them so
well – gentlemen in the making...

With less than seven weeks until we
depart on the Italian and Visual Art Italy
Tour, the boys are abuzz with excitement!
From the beginning of this term, a
number of tour boys have been involved
in after school activities aimed at
enhancing their experiences while we are
away in bella Italia. Ms Calanni has been
running afterschool Language classes on
Thursdays. This week’s focus was ordering
food! Wednesday’s are a combination
of Soccer training, in preparation for our
match against a Roman team, and ‘Fun
Facts’ about Italy.
Preparing for the Italy tourThis week the boys and I studied the map
of Rome and discovered the iconic works
of Michelangelo and Bernini.
Afterschool activities will continue
throughout the term and we would like to
thank the boys for their involvement.

The CBC Junior Soccer team started the
knockout phase of the Champion Schools
Soccer Competition with an emphatic 4-0
win against Bunbury Cathedral Grammar
School this week.
CBC was the well-deserved winner of
the first stage, topping the group after
winning all its five matches last term.
Our three talented Year 7 boys, Edward
Pezet, Oakley Monument and Tiago
De Souza, delighted everyone with
scintillating, daring attacks. They proved
what an asset they will be in years to
come. Ryan Pratt stood out with his deft
passes and composure in front of goals.
Solid and consistent performances from
Jason and Ryan De Gennaro, Matthew
and Marcus Demiroski, Jayden Goncalves,
Adrian Ciampini , Julian Nardi and Ben
Radonich in goals ensured that the team
played cohesively, both in attack and
defence.
I must also acknowledge the enthusiasm
of two boys, Joshua Mascarenhas and
Gabriel Leone, who were willing to play
in any position and regularly helped out
after each game.
Great start for Junior SoccerIt was an honour to coach such a wealth
of talent, and I am confident that
this team will continue to trouble the
opposition in future games. Great work
boys!
Mr John Hortense
CBC Fremantle Newsletter | Week 3 Term 3
The year started with a handful of keen
and eager Year 7 boys asking about the
school football team. In the closing weeks
of Term 2 the try-outs began, with more
than 70 boys vying for 25 positions. After
a few weeks of trials, and having to give
some talented boys some bad news, the
team was selected and began to prepare
for a day full of football against other
schools in the South Metro League.
On Wednesday 7 August, the energetic
Year 7s headed to a wet and blustery
Ferndale Park to test the South Metro
talent pool. The first game of the day
was against a tall Tranby College side.
The game started slowly as the boys
were finding their feet and getting used
to playing together. After the first few
minutes it was one-way traffic, with CBC
notching up a convincing first win.
The boys were excited about their victory
and warming up for the next game
with new energy. Things soon changed
when our second game started against
Serpentine Jarrahdale. Our opposition
was ready to go from the first bounce,
quickly scoring the first couple of goals.
The boys soon realised that they had
to play a smarter and harder brand of
football. Our backline tightened up and
the midfield ran harder and helped their
defenders, which resulted in a very even
contest up until half time. Many of the
boys found themselves in a different role
for the second half and CBC were able
to have their second and hardest win for
the day.
Just as game three was about to get
