People Found a Lost Bible Scroll
Focus Passage: 2 Kings 22–23:1-3
Key Bible Verse All that the Bible says is from God (2 Timothy 3:16).
Life Application I can learn that the Bible is an important book because it is from God.
Level of Biblical Learning (Bible) The stories in the Bible are true.
Lessons for the LeaderHow does the story of Josiah guide you in leading preschoolers to worship? Consider the following. • After the death of his father, King Amon, Josiah
became king of Judah at the young age of eight. Think about the children in your ministry—this would mean some of them could become king in three or four years! What plans does God have for their lives?
• Read about the examples provided to Josiah by his father and grandfather (2 Kings 21:1-6,19-22). What types of examples do the preschoolers in your group receive from their families?
• Josiah’s search for the one true God led him to action. Josiah’s dedication to remove false gods and idols from the land involved the destruction of places of pagan worship and a renovation of the temple. What “gods” do people face today? How can you help preschoolers learn there is only one true God?
• During the temple renovation, a scroll containing the book of the Law given to Moses was found. Notice how Josiah reacted upon hearing the words of the scroll. Josiah immediately saw the gravity of the situation of his country. Wanting to know exactly where his countrymen stood in their relationship with God, Josiah appointed Hilkiah, the priest, to go to the prophetess Huldah. Read 2 Chronicles 34:23-28 to discover what transpired during the meeting. How can you help children respond to the reading of God’s Word?
• Josiah truly had a heart for God. He led the people to turn from their sinful worship of idols and false gods to serve the one true God. Do you have a heart for leading preschoolers to worship? What difference can you make in the lives of the preschoolers you lead in worship?

People Found a Lost Bible ScrollBased on 2 Kings 22–23:1-3
Hello, boys and girls. My name is King Josiah [joh SIGH uh]. I became king when I was only eight years old. Even though I was only a young boy, I loved God and wanted to obey Him. Many of the kings who lived before me did not love God. They did not take care of the temple. The temple was dirty. The walls were crumbling.
Eighteen years after I became king, I sent my helper, Shaphan [SHAY fan], to see the priest, Hilkiah [hil KIGH uh]. Shaphan told Hilkiah to count the money the people had brought to the temple. Hilkiah was to give the money to the builders and carpenters so they could clean and repair the temple.
The people worked to clean the temple. The workers repaired the broken parts of the temple. The workers found a Bible scroll that had been lost for a long time.
Week of September 6, 2009
Hilkiah said, “We’ve found a Bible scroll.” He gave the scroll to Shaphan.
Shaphan read the scroll. He brought the scroll to me. He said, “The men were working in the temple. Hilkiah gave me this scroll that was found.” Shaphan read the Bible scroll to me.
When I heard what the Bible scroll said, I was sad. I said, “The words of this Bible scroll tell us what God wants us to do. We have not been doing these things. We have not been obeying God.”
I gathered the people at the temple. The people listened to the words from the Bible scroll. I said, “I will do what the words of the Bible scroll say. I will obey God’s rules and laws. I promise to obey God.” All of the people promised they would obey God, too. (Actor exits.)

not do what the Bible scroll said to do.) What promise did Josiah make? (to obey God) Were the people willing to obey God?” (yes)
11aUse Worship Guides (7 minutes)

“Before” and “After” pictures. (under fallen column and in both lower corners; only 1—held by Josiah)
• Explain: “Today we do not read from Bible scrolls. Our Bibles look like books.”
• Display your Bible as you read the Bible facts.• Continue: “The Bible is a very important book.
The Bible comes from Someone very special. Let’s see who it is. Color the boxes with one dot. What word did we spell? Yes, God. The Bible is special because it is from God.”
