A man was just coming out of anaesthesia after a series of tests in the hospital, and his wife was sitting at his
bedside. His eyes fluttered open, and he murmured, "You're beautiful."
Flattered, the wife continued her vigil while he drifted back to sleep. Later, her husband woke up and said, "You're
cute."
Startled, she asked him, "What happened to 'beautiful?'"
He replied, "The drugs are wearing off."

The man told his doctor that he wasn't able to do all the things around the house that he used to do.
When the examination was complete, he said, "Now, Doc, I can take it. Tell me in plain English what is
wrong with me?"
"Well, in plain English," the doctor replied, "you're just lazy."
"Okay," said the man. "Now give me the medical term so I can tell my wife."

A motor ambulance for Darwin Hospital arrived
by the Malabar. This very necessary vehicle will
supply a long felt want in removing unfortunate
sufferers from the railway to the hospital.

Diana’s Diary
The St. John Ambulance Brigade weekly dance
which was held at Nightcliff last Sunday night was
even more successful than anticipated and it is with
very much regret that the committee announce that
they have been obliged to discontinue this popular
weekly feature, therefore, no dance will be held next
Sunday. I noticed Audrey Mulholland and Denis Spain,
Rosemary Wyatt, Mrs. Handcock, Mrs. G. Brooks
dancing to the four piece band headed by Ray Carney,
which continued to provide bright rhythm. The
committee requests that if any residents of Darwin
have magazines they could donate to the patients of
the Darwin Hospital it would be greatly appreciated
and they will be collected if contact is made with Mrs
Bradbury by ringing 711 after 5.30 p.m.

AMBULANCE HERE SOON
The St. John Ambulance Brigade’s new
ambulance should arrive in Darwin at the end of the
week.
The Assistant Administrator (Mr. Marsh) picked
the ambulance up in Sydney while on holidays and
drove it most of the way to Alice Springs, where he
arrived at the weekend.
He will drive the ambulance north. On the way he
will stop off at last month’s trouble spot, the school at
Elliott, to assess the present situation and to report to
the Administrator on his return.
St. John’s Superintendent Jack O’Hare said the
new ambulance would go into service at the Nightcliff
first aid post.
It would also be used as a mobile first aid centre
at major sporting fixtures.

Helping the “victims”
The St John Ambulance went on full alert at 10
am yesterday when a simulated accident left 40
people faking various injuries on the access road to
the High School.
The ‘accident’ – a collision between a bus loaded
with passengers and a car – triggered a full-scale
exercise involving three ambulances and 25 volunteer
medics.
Plastic replicas of serious external injuries were
stuck onto the victims, and people “acted out” their
injuries to make the exercise as realistic as possible.
St John Ambulance men and women, who did not
know when the exercise was to take place, rushed to
ambulance headquarters in Ross Smith Avenue and
were directed to the ‘scene of carnage’ near the high
school.
Dress of the day for ambulance staffers ranged
from full uniform to shorts and thongs and miniskirts.
St John superintendent Barrie Fricker said later
that the exercise was a complete success, and the
simulated accident scene was cleared in an hour and
twenty minutes ...
Shuttle
Three ambulances ran a shuttle service between
the accident scene and a makeshift hospital at the
Ross Smith Avenue ambulance headquarters.
The exercise was supervised by St John Corps
staff officer Kevin Kettle and Mr Fricker.
Mr Fricker said yesterday that the ambulance had
learned a lot from the exercise.
“But I am confident, after the way ambulance-
men performed here today, that we could handle any
road disaster that occurred in the Darwin area,” he
said.
The exercise was so realistic that a motorist
driving down Gilruth Avenue craned his head around
for a better look, and ran into the back of another
vehicle.
An eyewitness said the real accident was of a
minor nature, and no one was injured.
There was minor damage to the two cars.

Rural Ramblings – Frank Dunstan
One could think that the wet had almost departed,
having dumped most of its rain on the Top End.
There are even dragon flies flitting about, one of
the alleged sure fire signs of the start of the dry.
Unfortunately for those tired of the rain, dragon
flies always appear at this time of year regardless
the weather and there will surely be more rain to
come before the wet has finished with us.
It was Clean Up Australia Day last Sunday and
yours truly got up bright and early to do his bit for
the local environment. Well, I didn’t really get up
early for this. One of the things about growing old is
that I often get up about 0530 to go to the loo and
being wide awake don’t bother to go back to bed.
There was nothing so organized as Palmerston out
my way and I only managed to cover both sides of
the road from my place to the Darwin River
crossing, a round trip of two kilometres, picking up
just two bags of rubbish. Now, that’s only about
one third what I got on the same stretch six months
ago in the Great Northern Clean Up.
At first glance one could think that people are
finally waking up to themselves and being a little
cleaner in their habits. One could also think that the
container deposit scheme is working. Sadly, much
of the rubbish collected was flattened drink
containers and you can fit a lot of them in a bag.
The real reason for the reduced litter is the flooded
river crossing that has reduced through traffic to a
trickle for the past couple of months. The pub and
shop are on the other side of the river, and the
grubs are throwing their rubbish out on roads other
than mine.
I was thrilled to receive the letter from the Lord
Prior on Page 1 of this newsletter. Now, that’s one
amazing book review. I am slowly working through
a revised electronic version, but it’s a very big job
and I haven’t even started any serious research into
the paid Ambulance Service.
Had some computer problems and bought a new
laptop, one of those wafer thin things without a CD
drive. As this seems to be the trend, our updated
history will be on USB drive and fortunately, the
authoring program supports that.
More about this another week … Frank
