Approximately 93 teachers, staff, and admin-istrators will welcome more than 650 students throughour doors. The beginning of school always brings avariety of emotions—excitement, anticipation, and yes,a little bit of nerves for students, teachers, parents, staff, and administrators alike. As I start my first school yearas your superintendent, I share many of the same emo-tions, and am looking forward to a rewarding yeartogether.
Throughout the summer months, our custodians andtransportation staff have been busy preparing the build-ing/grounds and buses for the upcoming school year. Our administrative team and board of education have
also been busy with work to upgrade school building/grounds security along with energy efficiency improve-ments with our lighting, heating, and cooling systems. Many of our highly qualified professional educators andsupport personnel have utilized the summer months toattend professional development workshops and confer-ences with a common goal in mind—to be the besteducators and to do what is best for students and to notonly meet, but also exceed your expectations.

In an effort to provide a safer drop-off and pick-up venue for ourstudents, our school buses will drop-off and pick-upstudents in the south (small) circle drive beginning withour first day of school, Tuesday, August 18. These function much the same as laptops, andwill allow a greater use of technology in our school. We thank the Antwerp Board of Education for support-ing us in this endeavor, and look forward to many newand exciting learning activities with this greater availa- bility of technology.
TEACHING CHANGES—There have been severalchanges to our teaching staff over the summer. Mrs.Staas transitioned to the second grade position, Mrs.Bok to the newly created third section of second grade, and Mrs. Owusu-Safo transferred to the 4th-5th gradesocial studies. We are pleased to welcome our new 4th-5th grade ELA teacher, Mr. Nickolas Peckinpaugh aswell as our new 4th-5th grade intervention teacher, Mrs.Marie Plassman. In addition, we welcome Mr. ZachLee who will be teaching kindergarten and Miss Kirsten

MR. BUTE - HS/MSAs the summer winds down, I will begin by welcomingyou to the 2015-2016 school year. Antwerp’s goal eachschool year is to provide a quality education basedaround developing our students’ critical thinking, col-laborative, and communication skills. With a focusedeffort to develop these particular skills, our studentswill be college and career ready. To accomplish this,we must maintain a positive learning environmentwhere students take “ACCOUNTABILITY” for theiractions.
Antwerp Middle/High School, as an educational institu-tion, has an obligation to provide a safe learning envi-ronment where all students will receive a quality educa-tion. To accomplish this, students will understand andexhibit ACCOUNTABILITY. This involves studentstaking responsibility for their actions whether positiveor negative. Our students must be aware of the rules,
policies, procedures, and regulations for which they will be held ACCOUNTABLE. There are a few policiesthat will be emphasized to the students and I ask foryour help and support in these areas as well: dresscode, electronic equipment, attendance, bullying, inappropriate language, and public display of affec-tion. These are only a few of the policies, so I empha-size that you intently read through the student handbookafter your student receives it. You will also be able toaccess the student handbook on the school website.
For example:Under the dress code policy, a student’s hair color must be a natural color. It is the parents’/student responsibil-ity to make sure when hair is dyed it is a natural color.
Also under the dress code, shorts or jeans must be wornat waist level. The length of shorts/dresses must reachtheir fingertips when arms are placed to the side.
Under electronic equipment policy, students shall notuse or possess personal devices during the school day.Unauthorized electronic equipment will be confiscatedfrom the student and disciplinary action will be taken.
Under attendance policy, which emphasizes the im- portance of daily attendance. Attendance is importantin developing a quality work ethic. A student musthave a doctor’s note for every absence beyond fivedays.
Finally, a discussion should happen with the studentregarding our bullying policy. Bullying will not betolerated and will be addressed appropriately. I strong-ly encourage you to read our policy on bullying, whichcan be found on our school website and in the studenthandbook.
FRIDAY SCHOOL —One major change from priorschool years is the implementation of “Friday School”to replace “Saturday School.” Friday School will be
held from 3:00-5:30 p.m. Those students will be calledto the office at the end of the school day and will walkto the assigned classroom once the hallways have beencleared after dismissal of school. It is the parent/student responsibility to arrange transportation home atthe conclusion of the Friday School session.
SIXTH GRADERS — Incoming sixth graders are encour-aged to attend the Open House on Monday, August 17from 5:00-6:30 p.m. as there will be no separate sixth grade orientation. Open House will give the sixthgraders an opportunity to find their lockers, practiceunlocking their lockers, place school supplies in theirlockers, and determine where classrooms are located.Basic supplies for sixth graders would include a sepa-rate folder and spiral notebook for each class (6-8) aswell as pencils. You may use a 3-ring binder organiz-ing system if you choose. If there are additional itemsneeded for class, the teachers will let you know on thefirst day.
TEACHING CHANGES—This year we have added
Mrs. Alyssa Saylor to our Middle School staff. Shewill teach ELA, Science, and History. Mr. Jason Halewill be working with both middle and high school stu-dents as an intervention teacher.
