The administraon, faculty, and sta of WayneTrace Local Schools hope that you are having ablessed holiday season and look forward to serv-ing the students of our great school district in2015 and beyond.
Speaking of 2015, we are acvely seeking nom-inaons for the Wayne Trace Sta Hall of FameClass of 2015. Should you be interested in nomi-nang a worthy former sta member, pleasecontact either Mrs. Ann Olwin or me in the cen-tral oce, and we will get a nominaon formsent to you in a mely manner.
In academic news, the rst semester has nowcome to an end in what is to be remembered as ayear of transion for public schools in the stateof Ohio. As our faculty and sta connues tointroduce the new content standards to our stu-dents in all three school buildings, we remainopmisc that our students will be well preparedfor the new PARCC assessments and end-of-course exams that are coming our way during thesecond semester of this school year. The OhioDepartment of Educaon, in hopes of raising thebar for all students, is mandang several newconcepts this school year, and we believe we
have done very well in preparing ourselves forthese changes through a variety of professionaldevelopment acvies for our faculty and sta. Now, we must connue to introduce material, assess our students growth, and constantly eval-uate our system for delivering this material toour students. With that said, I wish to elaborateon one of my constant themes: Connued collab-oraon between school and home is essenal forall students be as successful as possible, and theadministraon, faculty, & sta wish to thank allof our parents, grandparents, and guardians fortheir connued support of our great schooldistrict.
Speaking further of appreciaon, we would liketo thank all of our senior cizens who aendedthe annual Senior Cizens Luncheon on Decem-ber 11. Your connued support of our schooldistrict is very much appreciated, and we hope
that you enjoyed both an excellent meal andsome fesve music provided by our high schoolmusic department. Thanks also go out to every-one involved in making this program possible, especially Mrs. Karen Wagonrod, who one againorganized and coordinated the event.
Congratulaons go out to our three musicteachers: Miss Sharon Spinner, Miss LouiseVranesevic, and Mrs. Ann Wieland for coordi-nang and direcng this years holiday concertsat their respecve buildings. We would like tothank these teachers for connuing to bring per-forming arts educaon to our students. Thanksalso go out to Mrs. Joni Wenninger, who plays akey role in many of our musical performances.
Finally, a tremendous thank you goes out toour sta and student organizaons for the manyChristmas events they sponsored and supported, which allowed people right here in our communi-
ty to have a more joyous Christmas. Not only doour teachers and sta members provide a qualityeducaon, they also movate our students togive back to others. Aer all, the real purpose ofour lives is to give what were able to give toother people.
As always, if you have quesons or concernsabout your childs educaonal experience atWayne Trace, feel free to contact your buildingprincipal or superintendent.

WT PAYNE ELEMENTARY
Jody L. Dunham, PrincipalHappy New Year from WTPE!
The start of a New Year causes many of us topause, reect and set goals for the New Year. Iencourage everyone to take a moment to con-sider invesng more me in the lives of youngchildren and students in 2015.
Children need to know that they have strongadult role models who care about their physical, emoonal and educaonal well-being. You canbe that special adult whether you are a parent, grandparent, sibling, relave, neighbor or friend.
Your involvement in your childs educaonduring the elementary school years will help himor her be successful now and in the future. Whenparents are involved, children have more friend-ships, behave beer in school and achieve athigher levels. You can be involved in many dier-ent ways, but nding the best way for you andyour child is important.
Looking at building-wide events for January,AIMSweb diagnosc assessments will be adminis-tered to students in all grades the week of Janu-ary 5. Data collected from these assessmentsidenes specic reading and math sub -skills.With this informaon, teachers are able to pro-vide specic targeted intervenons as needed. Please feel free to visit with your childs teacher

WT GROVER HILL ELEMENTARY
Kevin Wilson, PrincipaL
As we return to school we need to take meand reect on the many acvies that took placein December. The rst acvity to reect on is theannual Christmas Program. We congratulateMrs. Wieland and her fourth, h and sixth-grade students on an outstanding program. Thisprogram was enjoyed by standing room onlycrowds. Next, a big thanks to the members ofthe PTO who held their annual bake sale andbasket rae the same day as the Christmas Pro-
gram which brought in over $1,100. Finally, theStudent Council members held a Food Drive tohelp the local churches supply their food pan-tries. I would like to thank everyone who parci-pated in this very worthwhile project. It is greatto see the excitement of the students and com-munity as they come together to support theGrover Hill communitys needs.
With school back in session for the beginning ofthe second semester, the students will be verybusy. The rst major acvity taking place will bethe annual Spelling Bee. This years h andsixth-grade students are preparing for theSpelling Bee. To nd a student to representGrover Hill at the Paulding County Bee we mustrst hold the school Spelling Bee. The schoolSpelling Bee will be on January 8 in the aer-noon. We would like to wish good luck to every-one who will be parcipang in this years event.
Also, as the second semester begins we mustconnue to prepare for the state assessmentscoming this March. This year the state has createa new state assessment called PARCC. This newassessment will be in two stages. Beginning inMarch, the students will take what is called thePerformance Based Assessment (PBA) in Math,
Reading, Science, and Social Studies. Then in lateApril or early May these same students will takewhat is called the End of Year Assessment (EOY)in the same subject areas. Students will receive ascore on each assessment but will not receive anindividual score for the individual assessments.Instead, the state will combine the scores fromthe PBA and the EOY assessment into one overallscore. One more change for the students is thatthese assessments will be on-line. Yes, our stu-dents will take each part of the PARCC using a
computer. To prepare the student for thischange, the teachers have been using computersin their classrooms since the beginning of theschool year. This tesng and scoring system isdierent from what the students have done inthe past and so we as a sta will connue work-ing hard during the month of January to preparethe students for these new assessments.
I will connue to include informaon on thenew state test in future newsleers. If you haveany quesons concerning the new state test youmay contact the oce and ask for Mr. Wilson.
WT JR./SR. HIGH SCHOOL
Greg Leeth, Principal
Hopefully this newsleer nds all of you wellrested aer the holiday season. With the begin-ning of January and the second semester of
school, our thoughts turn to the upcomingtesng season for junior high and high schoolstudents. The following is excerpted from theOhio Department of Educaon web site regard-ing tesng that will replace the current OhioGraduaon Test taken by sophomores:
Ohio will soon replace its Ohio Gradua-on Tests (OGT) with new end-of-courseexams that beer measure whether stu-dents will be ready for college or a posi-on in the workforce. The exams willreplace the OGT beginning with the classof 2018 (students who enter ninth gradein 2014-2015). Students who take highschool English language arts I and II, alge-bra I, geometry (or integrated mathe-macs I and II), physical science, Ameri-can history and American governmentwill take end-of-course exams in these
subjects. To avoid double tesng, stu-dents parcipang in Advanced Place-ment, Internaonal Baccalaureate orCollege Credit Plus programs in physicalscience, American history and Americangovernment may take the correspondingtests instead of Ohios end-of-courseexams in these subjects.
Noce these new tests, called Next GeneraonAssessments, will be taken by the current fresh-man class. Current sophomores, and juniors orseniors who have not passed all parts of the OGT,will take and must pass the OGT to graduate inOhio. An informaonal meeng will be held onJanuary 26 at 6:30 p.m. in the Wayne Trace HighSchool cafeteria for all parents of current fresh-man to explain the new tesng and graduaonrequirements. Again, I repeat, these new testsand the new graduaon requirements go into
eect with the current freshman class!
In addion to the Next Generaon Assess-ments in the high school, new tests are beinggiven in Reading, Math, and Science in grades 7and 8. These tests require students to show mas-tery of much more complex skills and are muchmore me consuming than the previous OhioAchievement Assessments. I encourage you totalk to your junior high students and their teach-ers about the tests they will be taking in March.
It is also the me of year that senior studentsshould be mindful of college applicaon dead-lines, while their parents should begin work com-pleng the FAFSA (Free Applicaon for FederalStudent Aid). This applicaon is required by col-leges and universies as it provides guidance forthem to oer nancial aid packages to prospec-ve students. Parents, if your son or daughter isthe rst in your family to aend college and youneed guidance navigang this process, please callhigh school guidance counselor, Mrs. SarahFranz.
Junior students should begin creang a list ofpotenal colleges and universies to which theywill apply. They should also schedule an ACT test,a college readiness entrance exam, in the spring.
Of course sophomores should connue to puttheir best foot forward in their academic pur-suits. While college and work may seem far awayfor them, the habits and decisions made todaywill have great inuence on their future successin both.
As always, if you have any concerns regardingyour childs academic pursuits, please contact hisor her teacher. Together we can make a dier-ence in your students life.
