Unit 1: Addition and Subtraction of Fractions (August/September - 15 Days)
Students apply their understanding of fractions and fraction models to represent the addition and subtraction of fractions with unlike denominators as equivalent calculations with like denominators.
They develop fluency in calculating sums and differences of fractions, and make reasonable estimates of them.
Common Core Standards:5.NF.1 and 5.NF.2
![Page 10: Welcome to 5th Grade Back-To-School Night Thursday, August 21, 2014 Cranberry Station Elementary School Session 1 5:30-6:20 Session 2 6:30-7:20](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062421/56649e0f5503460f94af993f/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Mathematics | Standards for Mathematical Practice The Standards for Mathematical Practice describe behaviors that all students will develop in the Common Core Standards. These practices rest on important “processes and proficiencies” including problem solving, reasoning and proof, communication, representation, and making connections. These practices will allow students to understand and apply mathematics with confidence.
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Find meaning in problems Analyze, predict and plan solution pathways Verify answers Ask themselves the question: “Does this make sense?”
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. Make sense of quantities and their relationships in problems Create coherent representations of problems
I can use numbers and words
to help me make sense of problems.
When given a problem, I can make a plan to solve it and check my answer.

Science
Environmental Unit- “Unless”(organisms, renewable & non-renewable resources, native plants vs. alien plants, recycling etc…)Through activities and resources in this unit, students will examine the dynamic nature of
living things, their interactions with the environment, and the results from the interactions that occur over time. Through an Environmental issue investigation, students will be asked to take action to positively impact their school grounds.
Our Changing Earth(rocks & minerals, fossils, weathering & erosion, etc…)Through activities and resources in this unit, the students will examine the geological
features of the earth and how they are changed over time.
Earth and Space(phases of the moon, stars, planets, gravity, shadows, sun,
etc…)Through activities and resources in this unit, the students will examine the components
of the universe and identify the properties that make it possible for the survival of life.
