It's hard to believe we are back around the calendar another year and getting ready for bull sale season. As I pen this welcome we are enjoying beautiful weather which certainly helps as this is a very busy time of year. As we're getting the catalogue together for the 2010 offering 20 plus calves a day are hitting the ground and we're already working on our 2011 bull sale. Our breeding plans for spring are in the back of our minds for the 2012 crop. Don't you just love this cattle business! Although a very hectic and busy time of year we certainly look forward to it as it is a time we reacquaint with many of our repeat customers and friends as well as talk to and meet many new cattlemen in search for genetics to enhance their breeding programs. It seem we're all too busy these days and one of our regrets is we just don't seem to have enough time to spend with out colleagues, customers and friends. We certainly look forward to visiting with you sale day and the days and weeks prior to either on the phone or at the ranch. Our door is always open and we're certainly willing to help in your herd bull selections and marketing strategies. Our customer base spans across Canada and into the Dakotas from 20 cow farms to 1600 cow outfits with a variety of cross breeding types and includes many of the top commercial cattlemen in the industry. It is truly our pleasure to work with you year after year in your quest to improving your herds. We feel very fortunate to call our customers our friends. If you have never been to our bull sale or have been several times, we would like to extend a warm welcome to be a part of our 2010 event. For those of you unfamiliar with us, we are a family owned and operated ranching outfit making our living solely in the livestock business. Sound management decisions and elite genetics is what pays the bills. Our ranch has been in business for over 100 years and have been in the purebred seedstock business for almost 40. The same people who breed, feed and calve the cows are the same persons who will help you select your bulls, drop them off in your yard and stand behind them. As fellow cattlemen, we will be the first to admit that the cattle business has not been all roses the past few years as we make our living solely with our cows as well. We have all learned to cut corners, shave costs and do what we have to do to survive. We've done the same but we have not cut corners that directly affect the production of our operation. One area in particular is our herd bull battery which is the major component to not only next years calf crop but the future of our cowherd. In fact since 2002 we have dug deeper than ever to assemble one of the most powerful herd bull batteries in the industry and you can certainly tell by our calf crop and bull lineup for 2010. Although not all roses, things are starting to take shape for the upswing in the business. Feed prices have got better, and numbers have decreased to lows dating back to the 1950s across North America. We would love to have you join us March 6th at the ranch. If you cannot, this program has worked well for many busy cattlemen unable to make it to our sale. With families and a bunch of cows ourselves, we realize that with hockey, 4-H, chores, frozen water bowls, cows calving and everything else it is sometimes hard to be everywhere you want to be on certain days. Each and every year we sell more bulls through this program from clean across the country to next door neighbors. The program is simple. Call us in advance (preferably a week or so) before the sale to discuss your cowherd, breeding objectives and herd bull requirements. From what we gather from talking to you about your program, we can fit you with a herd sire or herd sires within your price ranges and suited to your needs without you leaving home. The bulls will be personally hand picked by Lee, Dave or Jim. We are a family run operation so the same person helping you pick your bull is the same person who calves, breeds, feeds and lives with these herd bull prospects and their mothers year around. We know our cowherd very well and the genetics strength of each bull on offer. Just the same as you know yours. Almost 40 years in the bull business we have gained a level of trust and integrity with our customers and have had repeat customers buy their bulls here for years and not been to a sale yet. We will get you the best bull for your program as reasonably priced as we can- you have our word on that.

Here are a few details about our operation and why we think an MRL herd sire may work for you.

* Over 30 years in the business. Almost 40 years we have been committed to and stuck to producing Simmental seed stock which Will work well under your commercial conditions. Easy fleshing, structurally sound beef cattle have always been #1 at MRL.

* Customer Care. We will make sure you have a bull to breed your cows to. If you run into trouble, give us a call. We will have several insurance bulls at the ranch at all times and will get you a replacement bull as soon as you need one. We also have post sale delivery on offer. For those busy cattlemen unable to make it sale day, we offer a sight unseen buyers program and pre-selection program, as well as several sale consultants to leave an order with.

* Quality Not Quantity. Our operation consists of over 500 working females. The 117 bulls on offer have been selected from 250 bull calves, therefore we can be very strict when selecting our offering. The toughest thing about our bull sale will be making up the sale order. Pens full of uniform ½ and ¾ brothers.

* Bull Development. These bulls have been developed on a high roughage, silage, grain and ground straw/hay ration plus minerals. Our objective is to offer you sound breeding bulls ready to go to work and stay working for years to come. “Stuffing” is for the “Christmas Turkey” not “breeding bulls”. A pair of ET full brothers that have caught the attention of many cattlemen as early as last spring, all summer and to date in the bull pen. For red genetics, their pedigree is for sure unique in Canada yet quite proven in the US. This will be some of the first Beef Maker progeny in Canada to sell. Beef Maker is a calving ease bull with performance, maternal and carcass values whose sons have topped some of the major bull sales south of the 49th the past couple of years. The first Beef Maker son to sell in Canada this fall brought $13,000; a true powerhouse, good footed, great numbered, homo black and polled

individual from the Granger’s that we now own. On the maternal side of the pedigree is our Fortune 500 donor female TSN

8R. The grandam is a 600 plus donor female at TSN who has been flat out awesome. Three daughters have

been sold as lead off females at Shades, we own 2 of them and were the runner up bidder on the

other, the high selling female in 07 to Roenda and LWC and full sister to our 8N cow. Cow families are extremely important to us and we have been searching for an elite Fortune 500 cow upon viewing and seeing the production of several of these

females in North Dakota over the past few years. The 8N cow was the one and has

certainly met every expectation we have had. This flush not only produced these 2 headliners,

but also 2 full sisters that are standouts in our replacement pen and her natural calf by Edition is also a

leader in that pen. She will definitely be a cornerstone in our breeding program. As far as the individuals themselves, they

are similar in type; dark red, full of muscle, long bodied and plum full of style. Solid numbers across the board ranking in the top end

We really like this calf. He really puts it all together and surely deserved his picture in the book. Regardless, he won’t be hard to spot in this powerful group of Hurricane sons. Red blaze faced, moderate framed and built like an apple crate. Thick, wide, well balanced and an excellent hair coat. Outstanding calving ease, performance and maternal values.

This may very well be the sleeper in the sale offering! Sired by none other than Hurricane and his dam is awesome with a production record second to none. She raised our high selling red bull in 07, MRL Talladega, a highlight and high selling bull last year MRL 147U to Storebo Farms and RIngstead and she has a couple of daughters in our herd with production records that will rival any in the industry. This is one that surely deserves a second look.

This has been one of the standouts all along. A true power bull by Hurricane out of the Red Satin cow from LaBatte's. We flushed this cow last spring with great success. A full sister was a popular female last spring at Agribition and Shades of the Prairies sale. She was the high selling open heifer at Shades 09 to one of the top breeding operations south of the 49th, Kenner Simmentals. This long bodied, stout individual won’t be hard to find. A herd bull prospect here that really puts it all together and may be as good as we’ve ever produced. We absolutely love this calf for so many reasons. This fella will be easy to spot in the black pen of calving ease bulls. He's built like a brick outhouse with excellent birth to weaning spread numbers. His dam is one of the top heifers we calved last spring. These Edition females are super, super productive cows; what a job she has done, 811 lb 205 day weight.

Awesome pedigree on this solid black, smooth made fall born Extra Age bull. TNT On Star (see footnotes on Lot 71) out of an ET direct daughter of Power Drive and the Kelsey J852 cow. She is one of our most beautiful cows and the dam to the powerful Edition female we sold at Shades 08 as the high selling female to Kevin Granger at $9800. The calf she was carrying, a Beef Maker bull calf, brought $13,000 at Shades in 09. Not a bad return on investment in a one year period. Our fall born calves more or less look after themselves. This one has power in the pedigree.

A combination of the Redeye bull and one of those maintenance free, highly productive Bodybuilder females. He should produce stout steers and excellent replacement females.

A dark red, long bodied fall bull that will calve easy and cover a ton of cows this spring.

Not the biggest bull in the pen, but one with a lot of merit. Being a twin out of the fall program, life can be a bit rough but this fella has held his own and is one of the really well made calves in the group. He will get more impressive as he matures and fills out. Solid red, smooth made.

A ½ Simm ½ Angus headliner in the Extra Age pen sired by Turbo out of a beautiful Angus female sired by Mercedes and the good old 135 cow, grandam of the super Lot 84 bull in the yearling division. This fella should calve easy and is one we really like.

The Redeye group are solid and his dam is a Hobo 1961 cow that is one of our favourites. She raised a high selling bull to Brock Thompson in 09. His dam is one of our really nice young females and his sire is one of the top Angus bulls we have raised, going to a top operation in North Dakota in 08 to Dean Stroh. What an impressive first set of calves he has sired on his first calf crop. Just as we hoped; calved easy, grew like heck and are solid, stout built herd bulls. This is one of the good prospects in this outstanding sire group.

A big strapping dark red performance bull here with an actual weaning weight of 800 lbs the 15th of August. His dam is a milky female that always brings a heavy weight home in the fall. A similar maternal brother went to Rod Johnson as a top seller in last year’s sale.

Here’s one with a unique pedigree that will make a premiere cow. The first Redeye heifer calf offered for sale went to Remington Cattle Co’s premiere operation in Alberta this fall at the Shades sale. This will be the only other one we will part with. The dam is a female we acquired from the acquisition of the Dusty Rose herd and a female I saw Randy purchase at Checkers as one of the high selling females that fall; she was one I thought was really good. She’s an

absolute tank. This young female will grow up to be a big volume broody female that has loads of potential to crank out some herd bulls.

The Turbo sire group of bulls were popular last year and are impressive again this year and the females are going to be the strength of his breeding prowess. This young Turbo has loads of potential. Her dam produced our high selling heifer out of this sale in 08 and her daughter from 09 was one of the first bred heifers picked out of our private treaty heifers by the keen eye of the Granger's.

It’s no accident this female looks the way she does. The Black Edition females are making tremendous cows and have been widely accepted and admired across the country and the cow family has been superb and has raised countless top herd bulls. The dam to a top bull in 08 to Blair Cowan, the grandam to a highlight Hurricane son in 08 to Walter Cullen as well as a highlight black bull this year, Lot 50, and the great grandam to our lead off bull in 02 to Hillcrest colony, just to name a few. Here’s a beautiful Storm daughter that’s one of the favourites in this strong pen of females. This is the most powerful entire group of females we have ever offered in our bull sale and many calves in previous years have gone on to be leading females in top herds.
