TRANSFIGURATION AND HOLY MASS By: Fr. Marce Singson
The Transfiguration of Our Lord is one of those epiphanous moments – an
episode where Jesus Christ is revealed as he truly is – not merely a fairly
special man, or a marvellous teacher, or even a thoroughly good bloke, but
he is shown to be God himself, revealed to us in all his glory.
‘Transfiguration’ in Greek is ‘Meta-morphos’ – from which we get
metamorphosis – a change from one thing to another.
The Transfiguration was a marvellous experience for the closest of Jesus’
disciples, those privileged to see this revelation at first hand; and it was an
experience which they wanted to go on forever. This is why Peter makes that
rather embarrassing comment about making three tents for Moses, Elijah and
Jesus – because if he sets up somewhere for them to stay then by the rules of
Middle-Eastern hospitality, they would be required to remain until the host
wished them to leave.
Few of us are privileged enough to have such a close, intimate experience of
God. Few of us encounter directly the glory and power of God. It may appear
like a fairy story, or the sort of marvellous experience that only happens to
other people. But the experience of God in these epiphanies need not be so
dramatic – God is to be found in the stillness and quietness of your own
prayers, in the Stations of the Cross, in the Rosary, in the Benediction. God is
to be experienced in the dark as well as the bright mountain top, and that
experience of God, with all the comfort, all the reassurance it offers is no less
valid.
But what draws me to this episode is not the dramatic. At the end of the great
experience, Jesus, Peter, James and John came down from the mountains and
returned to the plains and the city. After the glorious vision, their glimpse of
heaven, they had to return to their daily lives, however humdrum, however
exciting, however ordinary, and they had to get on with the job in hand –
being Jesus’s disciples.
The Mass offers us a Transfiguration, a metamorphosis, it offers us the bread
and wine changed into the Body and Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ. The
Mass offers us the mountain-top experience when we encounter Jesus
through holy readings and homily and when we encounter through his Body
and Blood. The Mass is the meeting point between normal human beings like
Peter, James and John, like you and I,
and with God Almighty.
The key thing therefore, is not
necessarily what happens on the
mountain-top, as wonderful as it may be,
but what that Transfiguration experience
does for us the other 6 days of the week.

THE SICK
26.02.2018, 12.03.2018 & 19.03.2018
Please contact the office if you require a
visitation/ home communion.
Basic questions answered according to the Catechism of the
Catholic Church.
Q. Where does the soul come from? The spiritual soul does not come from one's parents but is created immediately by God and is immortal. It does not perish at the moment when it is separated from the body in death and it will be once again reunited with the body at the moment of the final resurrection. Q. What relationship has God established between man and woman? Man and woman have been created by God in equal dignity insofar as they are human persons. At the same time, they have been created in a reciprocal complementarity insofar as they are masculine and feminine. God has willed them one for the other to form a communion of persons. They are also called to transmit human life by forming in matrimony "one flesh" (Genesis 2:24). They are likewise called to subdue the earth as "stewards" of God.
Q. What was the first human sin? When tempted by the devil, the first man and woman allowed trust in their Creator to die in their hearts. In their disobedience they wished to become "like God" but without God and not in accordance with God (Genesis 3:5). Thus, Adam and Eve immediately lost for themselves and for all their descendants the original grace of holiness and justice. Q. What is original sin? Original sin, in which all human beings are born, is the state of deprivation of original holiness and justice. It is a sin "contracted" by us not "committed"; it is a state of birth and not a personal act. Because of the original unity of all human beings, it is transmitted to the descendants of Adam "not by imitation, but by propagation". This transmission remains a mystery which we cannot fully under-stand.

Parking Attendants
Because of the large number of
parishioners attending our 8.30am Sunday
Masses it has been imperative that we
appoint 2 parking attendants each week to
help direct cars to their park. This will
help prevent cars from being parked in or
parking in an unappropriated manner.
We have 5 wonderful volunteers at present however we would like to make
up a roster so as it is not the same ones helping out each week.
If you would like to be involved in this wonderful ministry please contact
the parish office 3299 2000 or email [email protected]
Thank you.

“ Let our hearts beat with the heartbeat of the
poor” (Rule book p.16) was the theme of the Regional
Council Festival Mass/Mini Retreat and Induction
Ceremony held at St Paul’s, Woodridge last weekend.
The Mass was celebrated by the parish priest, Fr Dave Batey who
inducted new members and all members committed themselves to
serving the poor and marginalised with compassion, advocacy,
respect and empathy. Two members were recognised for their 30
year membership of the Society, what an inspiration!!
After morning tea we had a session presented by the vibrant and
enthusiastic Sister Melissa Dwyer. She challenged us to shower
love on those we visit; create a relationship and friendship with
them. It is only in this way we will bring about change in their
lives.
Her quote, “ The uglier and dirtier
the situation, the greater should be
our love”.
At lunch we had opportunity to
share our responses to her session
and how we could implement her
ideas in our Conference. In short It
was both a challenging and
inspirational morning – a morning
well spent.

St. Edward’s Parish is the host for the World Day of Prayer.
Suriname is a small country on the northeastern coast of South
America. It's defined by vast swaths of tropical rainforest,
Dutch colonial architecture and a melting-pot culture. On its
Atlantic coast is the capital, Paramaribo, where palm gardens
grow near Fort Zeelandia, a 17th-century trading post.
Paramaribo is also home to Saint Peter and Paul Basilica, a
towering wood cathedral consecrated in 1885.
