What is Health?What is Sickness?
Step 1
What is Health?What is Sickness?
What is Health?
l How do we know when we are well?
l Can health be defined in terms other than disease?
l Is health more than the absence of disease?

Consider Health as a Continuuml Health is a dynamic balance
that sustains wellness and freedom to live our lives
l Health is MORE than the absence of sickness
l Each person moves along a continuum between health and illness
l What causes a person to move in either direction?

Why do some people get sick and some people stay well under the same circumstances?
We need to look at concepts ofAdaptation and Susceptibility
Why do some people get sick and some people stay well under the same circumstances?
We need to look at concepts ofAdaptation and Susceptibility
Health Requires Adaptation
l Every living being interacts with its surrounding environment. Examples?
l What happens when the organism can not react or respond adequately to a stimulus from the environment?
Health Requires Adaptation
l Every living being interacts with its surrounding environment. Examples?
l What happens when the organism can not react or respond adequately to a stimulus from the environment?
l Susceptibility is a weakness which prevents your body or psyche from adapting to environmental impacts
l Some things are susceptibilities for everyone, others for only some...
l Only that to which we are susceptible can cause illness... what are your susceptibilities?
l Susceptibility is a weakness which prevents your body or psyche from adapting to environmental impacts
l Some things are susceptibilities for everyone, others for only some...
l Only that to which we are susceptible can cause illness... what are your susceptibilities?
So Health is Dynamic....
l Consider that health / illness is not about a bacteria or virus...
l Health / illness is about the organism's susceptibility and its ability to adapt to all of the environmental impacts encountered
l This is the basis of a holistic view of health and medicine – it is all connected!!

likely to see?
Step 2
What is a Symptom? What flavors of symptoms are we
likely to see?
So what is a symptom?
l Any change from 'normal' for that person which indicates a disturbance of health
l Symptom can be related to sensation (feeling) or function (bodily process)
l Symptom can be related to organic tissue change (physical changes)
l Symptoms are the language of disease

l Symptom can be related to organic tissue change (physical changes)
l Symptoms are the language of disease
Symptoms have details....
l It is very important to understand the full nature of each symptom of illness.
l Etiology, onset and concomitants: what brought on the symptom? did it appear / progress quickly or slowly?did anything else come on at the same time as the symptom?
l Location, sensation and affinity: where exactly and what does it feel like? What tissue is affected?
l Timing and Modalities: when does it happen and what makes it better or worse?
l Mental state: any changes in disposition or function

'I have shoulder pain' is a category!
This is a fully elicited symptom:'I have shoulder pain that started when I fell down the stairs last week. It hurts in the front of my left shoulder, deep inside the joint. The pain feels like fire burning in there. If I stay still it does not hurt at all, but if I raise my arm the pain starts immediately, and lasts for at least half an hour. If I put ice on it, the pain will stop quickly.'

What questions could you ask to fully detail this symptom? How do we learn the language of disease?
What about 'My stomach hurts' ?

Useful Questions
What does it feel like? (Pain has flavors)
Where do you feel it? (Can you point to it??)
What makes it better or worse?
What was happening when it began?
Did anything else change at that time?
How long has this been happening?
HAVE YOU HAD THIS BEFORE? (Not acute??)

Complexity Matters
l These example patterns have some collection of elements that define them. The elements can be fixed points or predictable variations (repetition, alternation, periodicity, sequence).
l The relationships between elements such as proportion, interaction or causality can also define the pattern.
l As the complexity of the pattern increases, the challenge of matching it increases. (Eeeeek – pattern matching!!!)

We Are Using The Terms:
l Pattern: a form, template or model, or an abstract set of rules that define an entity. A pattern allows the entity to be built, recreated or perceived. The built or perceived entity 'exhibits' the pattern. It can be named.
l Recognition: Detection of underlying pattern through checking for the defining elements of the known pattern. More complex than pattern matching because the patterns are less well defined; test case data ambiguous.

Symptoms of a person's illness are a pattern
l The total pattern of all the ways that the health of the individual has changed since the onset of sickness IS THE DISEASE PATTERN
l We interview the person to identify all of the relevant symptoms. Some symptoms may not be relevant for us to consider; why might this be?
– Some are common for the complaint
– Some may not be related to here / now / this

Recognizing Partial Patterns
l Threshold: A minimum point, beyond which a condition is met. Used in electoral policy, laser technology, sensory perception
l Recognition threshold: How much of the pattern must be present to be recognizable?
– How much of an elephant do we need to see in order to recognize that it is an elephant?
– What else shares features of an elephant? – (Fable of the elephant and the blind men)
l Guideline of the Three Legged Stool – 3 reliable indicators

Pattern Variation
How do we accommodate pattern variation in illness?l Each case will be a little different in presentation; we should expect this.
l Not every feature will be present each time; It's not Chessl In variable patterns it is crucial to stick with facts and avoid assumptions

You can do this...
l Taking homeopathic remedies:– Give a remedy as a few pellets under the tongue or dissolved in
water to drink (shot glass / mason jar...)
– Watch for response in change of symptoms• Change in energy (happy, sleepy, hungry, normalizing)• Change in nature of pain or appearance of symptoms• New symptoms, return of old symptoms
– Wait when symptoms are relieved, repeating when necessary to maintain improvement: concept of the minimum dose is very important
– If the symptom pattern changes, you may need to change the remedy as the illness progresses

Cocculus indicusl Made from Indian cockle tree (Levant berry, Fishberry)
– Dried berries contain picrotoxin – powerful nervous system modifier
– Used for centuries in powder to stun fish so they are easy to catch – Used to enhance beer's intoxicating effects– Pattern recognition:
• Ailments from shock, fright, loss of sleep (“night watching”)– Stunned, slow to answer, disorientation
• Vertigo and dizziness with nausea and vomiting – Car sickness, motion sickness, sea sickness
• Affinity to the central nervous system and the GI tract• Emotions include “extreme sadness”
– Dosing: Start with 30c 3 doses over 24 hours
