In the current changing landscape, as demands on health and social care
education increase and priorities change, new challenges and opportunities
present themselves. Now, perhaps more than ever, we need to ensure that
practice education remains high on the agenda, evidencing innovation and quality
as well as responsiveness to changes in practice and future needs. Against this
backdrop partnerships and innovations in practice based learning offer a means to
maintain capacity and quality and provide a focus for the 2017 conference.
Therefore we are seeking poster and presentation abstracts for the following
themes:
Working in partnership to build placement capacity
Assessment for learning in practice in a shifting landscape
Research in practice education

Call for papers for the John Horder Award 2017
Applications are invited for this prestigious award which is made jointly
by the General Practice and Health Care Section, Royal Society of
Medicine and CAIPE. This year two separate prizes will be awarded.
Who should enter?
1. A prize of £1500 to an Interprofessional team working within the
primary and health and social care care community in the UK or abroad.
2. A prize of £150 to a prequalifying student from health and social
care professions who has participated in interprofessional learning and
working in the community.

Interprofessional Education Collaborative - connecting health professions for better
care.
In 2009 six US national education associations of schools of the health professions formed
a collaborative to promote and encourage constituent efforts that would advance
substantive interprofessional learning experiences to help prepare future health
professionals for enhanced team-based care of patients and improved population health

Sleep and mental health in children and young people, 2 June 2017, Bristol, UK
Sleep difficulties are common in children and adolescents, especially in some high-risk
groups, such as young people with developmental difficulties or mental health problems.
Clinicians working in paediatric or child mental health settings need an understanding of
sleep disorders, how sleep disturbance impacts on a young person’s physical and cognitive
development and mental health and how such disorders can be prevented and treated.
During this one-day conference the following aspects will be covered;
The basic neurobiology of sleep including psychological and physical effects of poor
sleep
Sleep disorders and their treatment
The use of medication in sleeps disorders

2017 Jack Tizard Memorial Conference and Lecture - Public mental health for
children and young people: addressing mental health needs in schools and
communities. 16 June 2017, London, UK
This day conference brings an outstanding line up of speakers who are world renowned
practitioners, clinicians, teachers and researchers addressing mental health needs in
schools and communities. Their sessions will focus on topics that draw on up to date
research and practice innovation on public mental health in schools: including,
partnerships between schools and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS)
dealing with mental health problems, enhancing and measuring wellbeing in children and
young people, new trialling of a classroom management intervention, and ADHD
interventions in schools.

Nordic Interprofessional Network (NIPNET) Conference: 8-9 June, Bergen,
Norway.
The new Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (formally established
by 1.1.2017!) will be hosting the NIPNET- conference 2017, in collaboration

Second International Symposium: ICF Education,30th June 2017, Cape Town, 8001,
South Africa
This Second International Symposium: ICF Education builds on the first held in Finland in
2015. The aim is to bring together people from around the world who are using the
International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) in clinical practice and
teaching such as in interprofessional education, research or product development.
Collaboration and participation from all stakeholders is important. All participants are
expected to share their experiences (whether they present an abstract or not) and learn
from each other. This will not be a symposium where you can just sit back and listen.

International consensus statement on the assessment of interprofessional learning
outcomes
5th Annual Worldwide Nursing Conference (WNC 2017) invites research students to submit a paper
to the conference which will be held on 24th - 25th July 2017 in Singapore.
WNC 2016 provided a forum and opportunity for delegates from 44 individual universities and more
than 20 countries to share their research, practice and educational initiative with an international
audience.
In addition Richard Gray, CAIPE Chair is keynote and conducting other IPE dissemination talks, We

1st Symposium for Interprofessional Education in Africa
The Africa Interprofessional Education Network (AfrIPEN) and the University of
Namibia invite you to the First Symposium for Interprofessional Education in
Africa.
This symposium follows the establishment of AfrIPEN in 2015 and the Network’s
first strategic planning workshop in 2016.
AfrIPEN’s aim is to establish interprofessional education and collaborative practice
(IPE) as integral part in training the health workforce and in the effective
functioning of systems for health in Sub-Saharan Africa by advocating for,
collaborating on, promoting and sharing good practice of IPE.

Patient Education and Counselling Alcohol Education Resource Center
Hosted by the Journal Patient Education and Counseling, The Alcohol Education
Resource Center was created to provide clinicians with a convenient site for

CAIPE student scholarship awards 2017, 6th European Interprofessional Practice &
Education Network (EIPEN) Conference Switzerland 6th-8th September 2017
CAIPE is offering two competitive awards (one undergraduate/pre-registration and one
postgraduate/research) in the form of scholarships towards the cost for the winners to
attend the conference.
We encourage applicants also to seek other sources of funding e.g. from their own
institution. The successful applicants will be expected to share their work with conference
delegates both formally and informally.

Endowed Interprofessional Education (IPE) Professor Job Opportunity
The University of Kansas School of Nursing invites nominations and applications
for the position of Endowed Interprofessional Education (IPE) Professor in Kansas
City, Kansas at the KU Medical Center.
The University of Kansas (KU) is a major public research and teaching institution of
approximately 30,000 students and 2,600 faculty on five campuses (Lawrence,
Kansas City, Overland Park, Wichita, and Salina). KU has 13 schools, including the
only schools of pharmacy and medicine in the state, and offers more than 370
degree programs. Particularly strong are special education, city management,
speech-language pathology, rural medicine, clinical child psychology, nursing,
occupational therapy, and social welfare.

CAIPE Activities
CAIPE Board
CAIPE student reps, Stephen Garvey (dietician) and Linda Eyre (nurse) promoted CAIPE at
the Western Sussex Hospitals Interprofessional Student Conference 2017 on 14th
March. They spoke to many of the students from a range of professions and made some
useful contacts including the Open University.
CAIPE reps Jenny Ford and Amira Chaudhry attended the Newcastle-Sunderland medicine
and Pharmacy IPE conference to promote CAIPE. There was an exciting buzz at this event
and we met IPE-enthusiastic students and staff; there was some lively twitter activity
#IPEConf2017.
On Wednesday 8th March 2017, the University of Lincoln hosted the CAIPE Corporate Forum
‘IPE Innovation’. It was attended by Corporate members from the Universities of:
Nottingham; Cardiff Metropolitan; Robert Gordon; Salford; Bournemouth; and De Montfort
as well as members of the IPE team at University of Lincoln and the Lincolnshire Partnership
Foundation Trust.
Mark Brennan, University of Lincoln IPE Standing Group chaired the day and provided the
introduction to the programme. Professor Sue Rigby, Deputy Vice Chancellor welcomed
attendees to Lincoln and clearly demonstrated senior Management commitment to the IPE
Journey, reflected in ‘Thinking Ahead 2016-2021’, University of Lincoln Strategic Plan.
Mark Brennan and Milika Matiti presented the ‘IPE Journey at Lincoln’, followed by the
University of Lincoln IPE team presentation on ‘IPE in Three domains’. Following a delicious
lunch CAIPE Board members Jenny Ford and Richard Pitt assisted Mark Brennan in
facilitating discussion groups on the three themes of:
1. Meaningful Evaluation
2. Breaking Barriers
3. Interprofessional to Interdisciplinary.
Following plenary feedback and discussion we welcomed the Student Voices with
representation from Adult Nursing, Mental Health Nursing and Pharmacy. The day was
concluded with summary address from Richard Gray, Chair of CAIPE.

CAIPE Board Meeting on Tuesday 7th March 2017.
Key points raised were:
Marion Huber and Juanjo Beunza have been co-opted to the board as International
links.
The IPE guidelines and a covering email have been distributed equally amongst the
board members who have sent them out to their listed contacts (Non Corporate
HEI’s).
Shobi Nagraj is chair of the Research group following the departure of Scott Reeves.
CAIPE Five Year Strategic Plan was ratified by the Board, the process of identifying
responsibility for implementation will now begin
ATBHVIII Post Conference Report available on the website. This was a great success
and the planning committee were commended for their work.
World Co-ordinating Committee is exploring proposals
for: administrative/secretarial support. CAIPE will submit a proposal to support for
the next two years; the development of it’s own website rather than hosted by
Robert Gordon University.
Pan American health organisations held a conference to promote IPE in Latin
American at the end of last year. Liz Anderson attended on behalf of CAIPE. Juanjo
Beunza from Madrid, also attended and proposed that CAIPE has an important role,
but distance and cultural differences may prove challenging. He has offered to
represent CAIPE and to assess the most effective way CAIPE could help.
Following the presentation from the honorary fellows at the Chair’s Event in
November 2016 on IPE Leadership, they submitted a bid to the Leadership
Foundation and have requested that CAIPE partner them in this research. The board
expressed support for this initiative.
Westminster Health Forum: ‘Priorities for improving patient safety in the NHS: transparency,
safeguards and developing a patient-centred culture’.
On 26th January 2017 Richard Gray, Chair of CAIPE and Richard Pitt, Chair Elect attended
this morning Westminster Health Forum seminar.

The 2016 All Together Better Health VIII conference was held in Oxford UK from 6-9
September 2016.
The conference was jointly hosted by CAIPE, Oxford Brookes University and the University
of Oxford. The theme of the conference was Values Based Interprofessional Education and
Practice.
The conference steering group has produced a post conference report. Click here where

Richard Gray, on behalf of Hugh Barr, recently visited the National University of Singapore
(NUS) as a guest of the medical school. The invitation was extended to CAIPE following the
2016 All Together Health Conference which focused on Values Based Interprofessional
Education and Practice. During his visit to Singapore Richard had opportunities to meet
and discuss interprofessional developments with the University IPE Steering Committee, the
Department of Pharmacy, the Alice Lee Centre of Nursing Studies and the Centre for
Biomedical Ethics. For a full report of their time there click here
CAIPE responds to Improving Safety through Education and Training, Report by the
Commission on Education and Training for Patient Safety.
CAIPE recommends this report to its members. It provides a strong steer for IPE linked
directly to addressing the current concerns for patient safety. It should be used as a vehicle
to propel local IPE initiatives which require the support of Health Education England
especially for new projects and for educational research.
