Coming up: Learning opportunitiesand candidate questions
A hemline here, a pleat thereHeres four things I really love
- Manistee, history, business andclothes. So you can imagine that I
was just beside myself when I heardabout the Manistee County HistoricalMuseums fall exhibit PuttingManistee County and Manistee onthe Map, featuring people, products, events, places, art and literature that
brought us fame. The exhibit payshomage to James Earl Jones, Century
Boat, Kaleva Bottle House,Manistee National Forest,
boats named Manistee andGlen of Michigan.
When Harless Feaginsand Janelle (Sandstedt)Peterson were contacted
by the museum about thisexhibit, they responded
with a wealth of artifacts
and information about Glenof Michigan and it was myprivilege to see some of thescrapbooks, sales materialsand best of all cloth-ing from Glen of Michigan.Longtime Manistee people
will remember that Glen ofMichigan was a nationallyfamous, high-end clothingline for women and childrenthat was manufactured righthere in Manistee and wassold nationally in some veryfine stores.
The historical museumwill be presenting a pre-view of the exhibit attheir Seventeenth AnnualHeritage Social on Sunday,
Aug. 29 from 4 p.m. until 7p.m., with live modeling ofGlen of Michigan clothing
between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.I was honored to be askedto be one of the models andsaid yes, chiefly becausethat was the only way to getmy hands on the clothing. The event is at the ManisteeGolf and Country Club and
youll know youre in theright place when you see the
Century Boat out front!Make no mistake whether its windspiresand brown trout or clothing,
boats and female aviators, our community is definitelyon the map!

8/9/2019 West Shore Shoppers' Guide, August 22, 2010
7/8
By KEN GRABOWSKINews Advocate
Many of us breathed a sigh of relief at the conclu-sion of the August 2010 Primary, but we know thatlying in the bushes waiting for us is an even largeronslaught of political rhetoric and banter with theNovember General election.
If promises and wish lists were what made thiscountry run, then America would be firing on allcylinders right now. However, as the old saying goes, action speaks louder than words and in todaysworld the only thing our politicians have to offer upis words.
I think most of us would assess the August Pri-mary as being different in many regards. It certainlywasnt what you could term a traditional campaignby any stretch of the imagination.
The style of campaign that most of us are familiarwith is the one where candidates kiss a lot of babiesand press some flesh as they try and get out amongstthe public as much as possible. However, this one is
something I have termed as the isolationist cam-paign as candidates not only didnt get out amongthe public, they seemed to avoid it at all costs.
It was almost as if they didnt want to hear whatthe public had to say, or more likely, they flat outdidnt have any answers to our problems -- andproblems are in big supply these days.
So it seemed to methat candidates took adifferent approach togetting their messageout to the public. Usu-ally when an electionyear rolls around, wecant turn on the televi-sion without seeing one
candidate bashing theother between breaks inour favorite shows.
Sometimes we wouldsee one spitting venomat their opponent duringone break, and then turnaround in the next oneseeing just the oppositefrom their opponent. Itreally reached the pointwhere it felt like an inva-sion of my home, andmany times I wished itwould have been possibleto push a delete buttonto eliminate the com-mercials. Of course noneof them talked about theissues or solutions, as allthey wanted to do wastake cheap shots at theiropponent.
When we didnt seethat in the August Pri-mary, I thought it was awelcome relief, but thehappiness was very shortlived. That is becausewe were hit with an evenstronger form of home
invasion via other sourc-es like the telephone. It is rare for me to
have one or more phonemessages on my answer-ing machine when Icome home from work. However, in the primary, there would sometimesbe four or five every daytelling me about all thegood things that particu-lar candidate was goingto do for me and how badit would be to have theiropponent as our repre-
sentative.Toss in on top of that
my phone ringing at leastonce during the dinnerhour and you have a per-fect recipe for irritationand indigestion. To goalong with that, I neverrealized Dick and BetsyDeVoss were such closeand personal friends ofmine. It seems I had allkinds of messages fromthem telling me why Ishould vote for theirgood friend.
Sorry guys, your boydidnt get my vote.
Speaking of MikeCox... he tried to dragthis campaign into thegutter with some outra-geous statements aboutother candidates thatquite frankly werenttrue. I guess it made mewonder after listeningto one of his telephonemessages where he talked
about being a former Marine, honor, dignity, justiceand a bunch of other things that didnt quite mea-sure up personally to what he was saying about hisopponents in the phone messages.
Fortunately, his opponents had more class thanto fall victim to that type of thing and they didntanswer back.
When I wasnt getting buried under the phonemessages, the candidates were hitting me with an e-mail blast and flooding my email with enough spamproducts to feed six third world countries for sixmonths. I think my hand has a terminal case of car-pal tunnel from punching the delete button so often.
This campaign also has something that I liketo refer to as the Seinfeld episode as part of it.
What I am talking about is the episode from the oldJerry Seinfeld show where he and his buddy GeorgeCostanza go to NBC to try and sell them a televisionshow essentially about nothing.
That in a sense is almost what Rick Snyderscampaign did as the only thing we learned about himis he continually said I am a nerd. When it came to
answering questions about what he plans to do to fixMichigans economy and all the other vast problemswe are facing as a state he essentially said nothing --except to smile again and say yes, I am a nerd.
Just like Seinfeld, he became an instant hit withthe public as it appears they want a campaign aboutnothing just like the television show. If the old Sein-
feld theory plays true, then we could be in for a longrun for Michigans number one nerd.
What also intrigued me about this election is howpoliticians and the public seem to want the peoplerunning for office to create jobs. The truth of thematter is no politician around has ever created jobs.By working together with the legislature, they cancreate an atmosphere for the private sector to create
jobs, but politicians dont actually create jobs unlessthey tax us more and put everyone on the govern-ment payroll.
The August primary was also a classic example ofwhy every vote makes a difference. All you have to dois look at the United States House of Representativesrace between Dan Benishelf and Jason Allen that
was decided by one. I am sure there are two JasonAllen supporters out there that are probably kickingthemselves at not taking the time to vote now.
When you look at the fact that only 8 and 9 per-cent of the voters turned out in two City of Man-istee precincts it really gives an idea that a very fewpeople can actually control who fills those positions.
But... when something goes wrong after they areelected, 91 and 92 percent of the people are com-plaining.
Kind of makes you think about whether or notyour vote does make a difference.
However, I am sure it is a trend that will notchange before the November election.
