Foreword
we are delighted to be offering for auction the
contents of westbury, on behalf of retired Dublin
solicitor Mr Noel Purcell.
Most of the contents of westbury were inherited,
but Noel was also a collector with a keen eye, who
added to the contents through purchases from the
Antique shops and Fairs of Dublin. Noel is now in
his 90th year but retains all his enthusiasm and
interest in each item, from the period furniture to the
modern day Bang & Olufsen.
It is a pleasure to witness how each piece has been
cared for over the years. Everything is in excellent
condition, to the point where most items have
managed to retain their original key, a usual bugbear
for serial auction buyers!

Portrait of Mary Aylmer (Daughter of Richard Aylmer of Lyons)
Pastel, 9½" x 7¼" (24cm x 18.5cm), inscribed verso.
An eminent portrait painter of his day, Hamilton was born in Dublin around 1739. He began his studies under Robert west at the Dublin Society Drawing School and quickly made a name for himself, developing close links with several important families in Ireland, especially with the La Touche banking family. Having established himself as a leading portraitist in pastel, Hamilton moved to London around 1764 where the fashionable set flocked to have their likeness recorded by the gregarious young artist. He soon gained recognition by the Society of Artists in London where he regularly exhibited his pastels. Hamilton was best-known for his pastel oval portraits, such as this one, depicting the head and shoulders of the sitter. His faces were always well-drawn, with expressive eyes.
