Combat Fuel
When you go into a fight you want to have the right weapon. Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs) are
that weapon – a unique form of dietary fat with a wide range of positive health benefits to keep you
fighting fit.
Although this is not an entirely new weapon on the market, it has the potential to be an essential
addition to your diet for survival in modern times. Most diets these days are made up of Long Chain
Fatty Acids which have been shown to cause a lot of health problems. In contrast MCTs have been
shown to bring a lot of good, healthy stuff to the field.
Medium Chain Triglycerides are the good stuff that is left behind when the short chain fats and long
chain fats have been removed from coconut or palm oil. This means they have less or more carbon
atoms and Battle Brew MCT oil is only a carbon 8 and 10 carbon fatty acid ester. So they are absorbed
and metabolised quicker.
As with any weapon it needs to be used correctly for the best effect. And rookies should take it slow
until they are accustomed to its full arsenal. Start with half a tablespoon per day and increase this
dosage slowly over several days. This is powerful stuff and too much, especially on an empty stomach,
can lead to nausea, diarrhoea or stomach ache.
Rapid Fire Benefits of MCTs
· Fuel physical exertion· High energy density· Rapid rate of absorption· Quick metabolic conversion into cellular energy· Quickly mobilised in the post-exercise recovery phase to rebuild muscles and prevent
breakdown of proteins
Break through the energy barrier
More energy, fewer calories. Isn't that what we all want? Well that's exactly what MCTs give you. They
provide about 10% fewer calories than Long Chain Triglycerides. These fats are very efficient in
converting to fuel and are available for immediate use by our organs and muscles because they are
more rapidly absorbed by the body.
TACTICAL BRIEFING
Word from the lab: The increased energy you get from MCTs is attributed to the rapid formation of
ketones. MCTs promote the development of ketones which are used by the brain for energy.
If you need more energy either due to illness or following surgery, because you want to perform better
and counteract the decreased energy that comes with aging, MCT should be your weapon of choice.
All day, all activity endurance
Research says MCTs can increase physical endurance for high intensity exercise. We say “high
intensity? What's high intensity? ”
The lab rats say . . .
Researchers have noted in studies with mice that the muscles of MCT-fed mice produced higher levels
of key metabolic enzymes (3-oxo acid CoA-transferase, citrate synthase and malate dehydrogenase if
you must know). These are the enzymes involved in the Kreb's cycle, the body's primary energy
production mechanism. These mice also burned fat at a higher rate to enhance cellular energy
production.
Become a leaner, but not necessarily meaner, fighting machine - MCTs offer a triple approach to weight loss
· MCTs have a lower calorie content than other fats· They are not stored as fat deposits in the body as much as LCTs are· And they enhance thermogenesis (fat burning) to boost your metabolism and burn even
more calories
Word from the lab: In one study MCT-fed rats lost significant weight even though they consumed the same amount of calories as a control group of lard-fed rats. The researchers, Kaunitz and Colleagues, also described the MCT-fed rats as having an “excellenct survival rate.”
Other studies have shown decreased weight gains and fat content, in some cases up to 23% less, in MCT-fed animals as compared to those on LCT rich diets.
From the cage wheel to our endless treadmill of struggling with weight issues, studies have shown post-meal thermogenesis (fat burning) to be more active after meals containing MCTs. A study of obese women on a restricted diet showed improvement in insulin profiles when MCTs made up 24% of total calories consumed. Other studies confirmed the energy boosting effects of MCTs and increase in fatty acid metabolism which helps reduce fat deposits making MCTs a valuable asset in weight loss programmes.
Control that appetite soldier
MCTs suppress appetite without the need for militant discipline. That means just by being on a high MCT diet your caloric consumption would be much lower. Researchers of one study noted that substituting MCTs for other fats “can limit the excess energy intakes and weight gain produced by high-fat, energy-dense diets.”
Fight cardiovascular disease and diabetes
Use MCTs in your arsenal against atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease, and even Alzheimer’s.
· MCTs have anti-coagulation effects and have been shown to lower serum cholesterol· MCTs may reduce levels of cholesterol in the liver and other tissues· MCTs have been reported to act as antioxidants and reduce tissue requirements for Vitamin E· MCTs may have a slight hypoglycaemic (blood-glucose lowering) effect useful for diabetics and
anyone with a risk for pre-diabetes· A report by Kaunitz claims the life span of experimental animals is longer when the diet is rich in
MCTs which may be due to the glucose and lipid-lowering effects of MCTs
Less time in the infirmary - MCTs may boost immunity
For medical disorders that involve damaged or impaired lipid (fat) metabolism, MCTs have been proven to help in their treatment. These are:
· obstructive jaundice· biliary cirrhosis· pancreatitis· cystic fibrosis· celiac disease· Whipple's disease· Crohn's disease· regional enteritis· malabsorption in neonates.
For the little troopers
MCT has been reported to be useful in the feeding of newborn infants to assist in their initial growth and contribute to their physiological development in fact breast milk contains high levels of MCTs.
And for anyone battling life's knocks
Calcium and magnesium absorption may be enhanced in a diet containing MCTs and absorption of amino acids is improved. This means they may be a useful addition to the diet of anyone suffering any form of malnutrition or tissue wasting. In fact, they are often used as part of the formula in intravenous feeding following surgery or recovery from serious injuries, burns and infections.
