Survival was the most important
• All of the First Occupant groups had to survive
• Food/Shelter/Clothing/ Tools
• Everything they needed came from NATURE
• The First Occupants DEPENDED on nature and the environment
•How did the First Occupant groups get things they could not find where they lived?• They would trade to get
things to get other things!
Trading
• Trading is called the ‘Barter System’• Some tribes did not have access to certain
things• Groups used SURPLUS to trade with other
tribes to get what was needed• SURPLUS means EXTRA
Iroquoian Tribes:- Surplus of agricultural goods- But they need furs and meat-Trade Surplus of agricultural goods for furs/meat
Algonkian Tribes:- Surplus of furs/meat-In need of corn-Trade Surplus of furs/meat for corn

First Occupants: Trade networks• Each group lived in a
different area (vegetables, furs, stones beads, etc.)
• Groups travelled and met up with each other to TRADE.
• Goods were passed along and could go from one end of North America to another, going from one person to another to another....
• This is called: TRADE NETWORKS

Culture – Respect for the Environment

Spirituality/Religion: Animism
• The First Occupants were ‘Animists’
• They believed that everything had a spirit
• They believed that spirits could keep living after death.
• For example, a deer’s spirit could live on after the deer had died.

• Animism was connected to nature and the environment
• Animism respected nature and the environment (plants, animals, etc.)
