The first New York City SLA program was heldfrom October 8 through December 3, 2015. Each training session was a full day. The FloridaSLA training will be held on March 3, 17 and 31;and April 14 and 28, 2016. The Maryland SLAtraining will be held on March 8 and 22; April 5and 19; and May 3. We will soon have spring 2016dates for Illinois.

WHERE & WHEN CANSOCIAL WORKERS PARTICIPATE IN SLA?

As a young social worker as well as being new to the role of asupervisor, I feel fortunate to have been able to gain such wealthof knowledge from excellent social workers with extensiveexperience in the field of aging. My former supervisor encouraged me to sign up, and I am delighted that she did.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR THIS PROGRAM?

Supervisory Leaders in Aging (SLA) participants can expect to• gain gerontological knowledge and enhance theirteaching skills to guide practice with older adultsand their families

• strengthen and build upon their leadershipskills in supporting interdisciplinary teamwork

• benefit from continued peer support,practice, research, and policy updates,as well as from numerous opportunitiesand events made available through thegrowing chapter and national networkof Supervisory Leaders in Aging.

30 NASW-approved CE creditswill be awarded upon completionof the program. SLA participantsmay be able to apply these CE credits to meet social work continuing education requirementsin the state(s) in which they arelicensed.

Supervisory Leaders in Aging is designedto improve the delivery of health careand social services to older adults bystrengthening the supervision of staff providing direct social services.

Applicants must be MSWs working either as supervisors,or as managers providing supervision, to staff who provide direct social services to older adults. Both experienced and novice supervisors are encouraged toseek advanced training through SLA.

Criteria for practice settings – Employers agreeto provide time for SLA participants to attend 5 full-dayworkshops, to complete pre- and post-training questionnaires, and to support graduates in their efforts to enhance supervision and staff training.

This program will train more social work supervisors who

are specialized in caring for older adults, enhance social

work leadership in the gerontological field, and expand

knowledge on aging services so more social workers

have the skills to improve the quality of life of this

growing population.

HOW WILL THE SLA PROGRAM BE OFFERED?SLA provides training on 10 essential topics, delivered in 5 full-day workshops, scheduled biweekly over a 2½-month period. Workshops bolster knowledge andskills for supervisors to function as

• teachers, including advanced individual and group supervision

• leaders, including leadership in interdisciplinarypractice, translating research to practice, and measuring outcomes

• experts on aging, including biopsychosocial gerontological assessment, older adult mental health, and elder mistreatment and self-neglect.

Workshops are led by seasoned educators and leaders in gerontological social work. Participants will engageand network with peers in the cohort during workshopsessions and, beyond the workshops, with other SLAnetwork members from around the country.
