When we put a horse in our world– a domestic situation, it then willbecome our responsibility to meettheir needs physically, mentally andemotionally. Attaining the knowl-edge to make informed decisionsabout our horses’ diet is an obstaclethat all horse owners face.
Horses are grazing animals. Their bodies are designed by naturefor continuous movement and grazing. Living in the wild theytravel many miles and have quite a variety in the diets. They havebeen observed eating tree bark, dirt, limestone, mineral deposits, herbs and grasses of many different varieties. They know instinc-tively what their bodies require.
Keeping a horse in a stall, paddock and/or small pasture isunnatural for them. We take away their abilities to balance theirown nutritional needs by limiting what is available to them.Cribbing, eating manure, drinking from urine pools, sand colic, stall walking, stall weaving, food aggression and the eating ofpoisonous plants are a few of the behaviors that horses resort to inan attempt to meet their own needs or act out their frustrations ofnot having their needs met.
Minerals are an essential part of the structure but they also play animportant role in the function of the body. When any of theelements are missing or lacking, the result will be structuralweakness and system dysfunction or in other words disease.
The following minerals are generally recognized as essential togood health.
Calcium – a major mineral in the body, essential for normal bonesand teeth, nervous and muscular system function, normal heartfunction and blood coagulation.
Magnesium – Activates enzyme systems, associated with phospho-rus, zinc and nitrate utilization. A balancing mineral for calcium.
Copper – Necessary for activation of enzyme systems: helps ironin prevention of anemia: required with iron for formation ofhemoglobin. Needed for healthy immune system and diseaseresistance and protection against internal parasites.
Manganese – associated with phosphorus utilization, iron assimila-tion, necessary for normal reproduction and part of the bonematrix.
Phosphorus – essential for bone and teeth growth, fat metabolism,Vitamin A & D metabolism and normal reproduction. Should bekept in balance with calcium and magnesium.
Potassium – Essential for carbohydrate metabolism, regulatesthyroid, important for basic cellular metabolism and the regulationof fluids in the body. Important for nerve transmission.
Selenium – Required for normal metabolism through its interrela-tionship with Vitamin E. Helps the immune system.
Zinc – Essential for normal development of skin, hair, bones andeyes. Necessary for certain hormonal reproduction.
When you see how each of these minerals affect the developmentof life and the effects they have in maintaining healthy life, it iseasy to get over-zealous in supplementation. But over supple-menting of minerals can cause problems and can cause mineraldeficiencies.
Calcium in excess will depress levels of manganese, magnesium, phosphorus and zinc which can lead to ailments like nervousbehaviors, mastitis, respiratory ailments and warts.
Magnesium in excess will depress phosphorus and calcium whichcan lead to deformities, arthritis and founder to name a few.
Copper in excess will depress levels of Iron, zinc and phosphorus.Which can cause problems with reproduction and deformities inbones and teeth.
Manganese in excess will depress iron, phosphorus, potassiumand magnesium leading to nervous behaviors, respiratoryproblems, string halt and navicular disease.
Phosphorus in excess will depress zinc, iron, calcium andmagnesium. Ailments like founder, navicular, arthritis, warts, nervous behaviors and possible deformities can be the result.
Potassium in excess will depress sodium, iron and manganese.
Zinc in excess will depress iron, copper and phosphorus.
I think you get the idea.
To be efficiently utilized by the body, minerals must be in anorganically bound form which means that they must be cheletedor joined to organic substances. The term chelation comes fromthe Greek word “chele” which means claw. A chelator is amolecule that grabs onto a mineral and holds it like a claw. In theprocess of manufacturing a true amino acid chelate, the aminoacids are chemically bonded to the minerals. This process freescertain by-products such as chlorides, sulfates, carbonates, etc.which NEED to be removed during the manufacturing process tocreate a pure amino acid chelate. Some manufacturers are simplymixing minerals with amino acids and selling them as amino acidchelates. They are not forming the chemical bonds duringpreparation and therefore are not removing the by-productsnecessary for proper absorption.
Recent concerns about the depletion of our soils and the refiningof our food has led to mineral supplementation inan attempt toensure adequatenutrition.Unfortunately,as you cansee, takingjust any

form of minerals does not ensure thatthe minerals will be absorbed into thebody and utilized by the tissues.
So back to our originalquestion…..should we feed ourhorses Free Choice Minerals? Webelieve that research has proventhe importance of minerals inour diets and that of ourhorses. So the real question isthe same old question thathorse owners always runinto! Whom can I trust to give me the best advice on whichminerals to feed my horse and whom can I trust to manufacturethem? We believe that best source of information on what yourhorse needs is your horse. Given the choice of taking theminerals that his body needs or risk his health he will go for themineral. Remember he is a prey animal and his instincts are tosurvive. Just like his wild counter-parts his body knows what itneeds. He just needs to have it available WHEN he needs it inorder to maintain balance. Free Choice Mineral feeding canallow your horses to balance themselves.
When force feeding mineral supplements daily, especially asupplement of poor quality, it is very easy to over supplementand cause an imbalance. Horses communicate through bodylanguage and most stable vices and “bad behaviors” are only thehorse’s way, usually out of frustration, of trying to tell you thatit needs something and cannot get it. The horse’s body feels outof balance and this makes the horse uncomfortable.
Choosing to put your horse on a Free Choice Mineral programis not a decision to take lightly. What you give your horse asFree Choice options is where the knowledge part comes in. Wehave already learned that for minerals to be efficiently utilizedby the body we want to look for a quality product that has beenproperly chelated and by-products removed. There are compa-nies out there that have been working in the field of EquineNutrition for 20 – 30 years. You can benefit from their experi-ence and their research. Look for organic and human gradequality ingredients. These products are high in quality andproperly balanced. Less is more when the body is balanced.
Before feeding Free Choice Minerals, some factors have to betaken into consideration, such as feeding in group situations, pasture boarding, hay types and hay quality. Each horse’ssituation is unique and would require individual analysis.Investing the time to do this will give your horse the opportu-nity to be the best that he can be. And you will be givingyourself the gift and pleasure of his company for many years tocome. Minerals………the key to life and health.

Horseback Safaris - Standardone-hour, two-hour, or three-hour horseback safaris areavailable daily. HorsebackSafaris can be arranged forriders with varying levels ofexperience. All guests should beat least 12 years of age; 10 yearsof age is an acceptable age with proven riding experience.Guests weighing more than 275 pounds will need to beassessed by our Equestrian Director before they are allowedto take a Horseback Safari. Call-in reservations are recom-mended in order to assure that we and our horses are readyfor you.
A favorite with visitors is our two-night “Crescent JCattle Drive Weekend Safari,” which includes some training inFlorida Cowhunter skills of ridin’, ropin’ and cow cuttin’.(Florida cattlemen weren’t “cowboys” because hunting thosewild Spanish-descent cattle in Florida’s woods and swampswas a man’s job, they said.) Choice of campground dependson weather, type of group and recommendation of the ridinginstructors.
Another favorite is similar, but shorter – anOvernight Trail Ride Safari combined with a next-day“Rawhide Roundup.” More time is spent riding the wilder-ness trails of Forever Florida and learning about nature, lesson cowpoke skills.
Corporate Co-workers, Schoolteachers, ProfessionalClub, Flying Clubs, School Groups, Church Groups, Families,Friends, Scout troops or multi-troop Camporees – there areactivities and a campground on Forever Florida or theCrescent J Ranch that are just right for a bonding experience.See the Facilities and Events page for more details.
From a small primitive one-troop Scout Camp onthe Crescent J that has been used by Girl and Boy Scouts formore than 30 years, we expanded to a remote but up-scalecampground ‘way back in the wilderness of Forever Florida, then added two campgrounds in between and most recently,a large area “up front” (near the highway) that comfortablyholds up to twenty Scout troops for a big Camporee.
Variations on these basic campouts and safaris canbe worked out with our staff.

This is a BIG THANK YOU to Dr. Lucy Starbuck andLeAnn from Dr. Van Roekel’s office. I want to thank youboth for taking the camper top off my truck thatSaturday evening so I could hook up my trailer to takeDanzer to your office. I could not have lifted it offmyself.
I said that I do not drive well on Hwy 75, especially atnight and pulling a horse trailer with a sick horse toboot. Again, let me thank you for letting me follow you.I appreciate that you only went 65 mph and took yourtime.
You both went above and beyond the call of duty.Thank you so much for being so understanding, andthe muscle power!!!

a shout out!In the misty morning air
Lay a fine tall mare
All the others were munching on hay
While this mare was standing at the bay
It seemed as though she was waiting for another
Maybe even her mother
After a while came a bang
It made the horses have a suspenseful hang
This great God rose out of the water
After a while it started to get hotter
The mare started to rise
To the other horses this was a surprise
He was taking her home
To this big white show dome
The horse family came together
Like a bird and a feather

CountryAppreciationThe magnificent cities may entwine
their venomous vines
Around the sophisticated class and
brand them in their narrowness,
But I show faint enthusiasm of the
urban way of life.
I escape into the serenity of fortu-
nate fields of wood and dale.
The free breeze begins the chants,
chirps and songs of birds,
Smells of spring meadows and
whinnying of newborn foals.
To one who has learned to appreci-
ate that happiness and freedom?
There is nothing sweeter.
This rural atavism possesses me.
I am content to never be set free –
Until I satisfy myself with my last
breath of a country breeze.

“Grasshopper”Running bold and free, she dominates the
land,
With out-stretched back, high-held head
and tail a mast; blowing carelessly in the
wind.
She glows with an over abundance of
youthfulness,
Impressive for one of her years.
Bursting with energy, she uproots earth
with her powerful limbs.
Expressing her reign, thankfulness of life,
supreme presence and Heart overflow-
ing with the will to run.
She gives her all for me; forever immortal.

If horses were software.....A letter to tech support
Dear Tech Support,
Recently I purchased and installed Horse 1.0. I soonnoticed that this program appears to have numerousglitches. For instance, every time my computer boots up, Ihave to run Feed 5.3 and Water 7.1. Many times I’ve beenin the middle of writing an important document, and awindow will flash telling me to run Clean Stall 2.0. Thisprogram also contained applications I did not wish toinstall, such as Manure 8.5, however they auto-installedwith Horse 1.0. Applications such as Vacation 2.7 andFree Time 10.1 can no longer run, crashing wheneverselected. Possibly the worst is that Horse 1.0 has attacheditself to programs like Finance Manager and MS Money, with folders added such as “Monthly Shoeing” and“Winter Blanket”. Periodically, I’ll get a reminder tellingme to send a check to the manufacturer of Horse 1.0 forthe aforementioned items. I have tried to uninstall Horse1.0 numerous times, but when I try to run the uninstallprogram, I get warning messages telling me that a deadlyvirus known as “Withdrawal” will infect my system. Please Help!!!!!
Dear User,
Your complaint is not unusual. A commonmisconception among users is that Horse 1.0 is a mere“utilities and entertainment program.” It is not - it is anOPERATING SYSTEM and is designed by its’ creator torun everything! A warning will soon be imprinted on thebox. Since you have already installed Horse 1.0, here are afew tips on how to make it run better. If you are annoyedby the applications Feed 5.3 and Water 7.1, you may runC: \HIRE HELP, however this will cause another folder tobe added to financial applications, labeled “Staff”. Failureto send payment to “Staff” will result in Feed 5.3 andWater 7.1 being run again on startup. A note of caution:NOT booting up your computer for several days isn’t thesolution to avoiding Feed 5.3 and Water 7.1. You will findthat, when you boot up your computer again, a nasty viruscalled “Colic 4.2” will have attached itself to importantdocuments and the only way to rid your computer of Colic4.2 is by purchasing and installing “Vet 10.1”, which weadmit is extremely expensive, but crucial. Otherwise,Colic 4.2 will cause irreversible damage to the operatingsystem. Finally, it is important that you run C:\Carrots andC:\Scratch Ears on a fairly regular basis to keep theapplication running smoothly. If you haveany more questions, please call our tollfree number.
Sincerely, Tech Support
