Why Do Print Servers Exist? Because computer networks and printers don't
speak the same language (A Print Server or Raster Image Processor (RIP) translates
the languages coming from computers such as PostScript or PCL and "translate" them into a language that is understood by printers.)
Because Color needs to be transformed from a monitor-based color space into a printable color space (Color is key for brand owners. No agency, no print shop
can afford to not being able to have a effective handle on color management)
Because they enable personalization of printed materials (Short run lengths, localization and promotions, versioning,
article numbers, product proliferation, bar coding for supply chain,– This is where your margin is. Printing 10,000 copies of the same thing: This is not where your margin is.)
What makes the difference betweenPrint Servers? Form factor (external / embedded) Hardware components, specs & quality Software components (system software, options) Open Standards (ICC, PDF, JDF) Quality & stability of overall system
Let’s go over a few examples…

Performance ThroughSmartRIP Intelligent Processing Significant performance
increase over competingtechnologies and legacyFiery platforms
Highly efficient use of multiple processors Recognizes File Characteristics Using Adaptive Processing & Rendering Techniques
Image processing at the resolution required for best quality and performance
Optimized Processing of
Microsoft & Adobe Application Files
Improves efficiency and predictability in color and VDP. Increased performance which translates to better productivity Increased RIPping efficiency to drive the engine to full rated speed Increase image quality without affecting processing performance
Why some print servers are better than others – RIPping
RIP 1 While Print 2
The Fiery can start to RIP a new file while the previous file is printing Fiery works simultaneously on two jobs for the
ripping and printing processes
Increased productivity Reduces bottlenecks at the ripping stage Faster output to the printer device Maximize assets: users make the most of the Fiery & accelerate file processing for
faster output
Why some print servers are better than others – RIPping
Fiery Passes the Altona Test Suite

Spot Color Overprint
Designed to be the best proofing system for press simulation
Why some print servers are better than others – Color Management
Utilize the Altona Visual File to demonstrate to business prospects that the Fiery is the best proofing system for press simulation
Combine the best text and image quality in one page and obtain excellent output from a single device
CMYK Color Overprint
Device independent color definitions
Embedded output profile and rendering intent
Ugra/FOGRA Media Wedge
Passes the Ghent Output Suite!
Fiery passes all tests of the Suite!
Example of a RIP not passing the test
Tests a, b, e, f, g, j have failed, as indicated by the visual ‘X”
Utilizes the Ghent Output Suite to demonstrate to business prospects that the Fiery is the best proofing system for press simulation and fully compliant with a PDF/X-3 workflow.
