At an outdoor restaurant near a mountain temple in Korea two friends and I sat cross-‐legged—
protected from July heat by pines and a cold running brook. From the corner of my eye
an enormous black butterXlywinged through the shadowsof rocks then disappeared. Later it jolted again into sight—closer, like a bat in daylightor a small bird pantomiming to charm the mountain spirits.Did you see that? but my friends had notso engrossed with the soybean pancakes
and rice wine. Now I was vigil—wanting a witness, but I had only one more glance
as we walked down the mountain,a soaring reXlection dabbledon the brook’s glass surface
like a dark winged phantom. That night in a dream, mountainspirits summoned me to the temple.
The head monk served barley tea and said the temple had been his homesince the Shilla Dynasty.

As winter approached, the temperature dropped, and students suffered from fever, cold, and throat-‐spearing coughs. They all wondered: Are there any simple ways to end the pain?
There are four simple ways to maintain health in the winter season: eating breakfast, keeping a balanced diet, exercising, and resting. Health ofXicials proclaim that the main reason people get sick is because they do not follow these simple guidelines
Most students, however, tend to skip breakfast because they are rushing to get to school. They start the day lacking in nutrients and brain fuel. Many students also forget the need for exercise, so their immune system wanes from sitting all day in desks and in front of the computer. Finally, even though students feel worn out, they continue to dig through books and papers and ignore their fatigue. They have a mountain of homework to complete, so they deprive themselves of sleep and rest.
So, how you change these unhealthy habits? Make a food diary and keep track of what you consume at every meal. This will you see what nutrients are missing in your diet. and go outside, enjoy the fresh air, and jog for an hour. Don’t stay up all night with your eyes glued to the computer, but go to bed. Make this your routine and catching a cold will not be your concern.

And still…still I’m waiting for a busBut only the snowman knows
How much time did I spend there?Maybe an hour? Maybe two? I don’t know.

Our beloved counselor Mr. Rogers left after Xive and a half years of service at IIS.
He was generous and helpful, and he guided hundred of students to discovering their future. At times he was Xirm with students when they disrespected teachers or slacked off, but only because he knew it would help them be more successful.
We wish him the best at his new job, and we thank him for all of his help.
Farewell, Mr. Rogers!

The sky was gray and the trees were wavering. I was standing at the foot of the big gate of Bran Castle, a.k.a. Dracula’s Castle, anticipating a ghastly apparition to jump at my face. The mufXled sound of a distant bell echoed in the cold air. Ding! Ding! Ding! As the door slowly creaked, fear encroached on me and my heart began to palpitate in excitement. Ahhh! I bumped into an ebony Xigure that stood still and silent. @#$%Dracula! But I soon retained my composure and discovered that it was a tall man in a black suit; just another excited tourist waiting in line to venture into the daunting castle. His fear-‐struck face Xlashed past my eyes and I couldn’t belie my laugh. I entered the castle. Transylvania, Romania is the hometown of Dracula. Transylvania prides its copious collection of medieval heritage, especially castles and fortresses that exhibit a unique architectural design. Out of 180 castles, Bran Castle best depicts the contentious history of the country. A glass of scarlet blood, a pair of gimlet-‐like teeth, and a dark ebony drape wrapping the pale and cold pelt… is what most people envision when they hear Romania. But instead, I saw timbered furniture and fancy iron plates festooning the wall of the vacant hallway. I have to admit that at Xirst, I was disappointed by the dim hallway marked with emptiness, but my interest soon redeemed. I slowly walked up the spiral staircase with my camera glued to my face, Xlashing madly like a meteor striking across the dark sky. My attempt to capture a psychic photo unfortunately failed. The second Xloor was mind-‐boggling. The threshold was guarded by two hallow armors that glistened under the dim chandelier light. Rows of guns, shelves of fancy swords, and menacing crossbows were pointed towards me. The room embodied the bloody days of violent battles; history was alive. I carried my effervescence to Dracula’s dormitory. The candle-‐lit room was well-‐ furnaced with luxurious tapestries and wooden tables. But I had to gape when my eyes met the sharp, yellow eyes of a grizzly bear…. A taxidermy bear that lied
prostrate on the mahogany Xloor with its marble eyes glowering at the ceiling. It had a back that resembled an untended wheat Xield blowing to and fro in the cold winter breeze. What a lovely carpet. No blood. No horror. No waxed-‐up hair. In lieu, I was greeted by the cozy rooms, the unique architecture, the medieval weapons, and the b beautiful tapestries. My a anticipations of horror w were the products of the m misconceptions created b by the movie, book, and stereotype. However, these misconceptions have brought thousands of tourists to visit Romania every year. As these thoughts roamed in my head, I slowly walked up the stairs. The shrill wind began to pound on the fragile casement while the white pine branches scratched with its jagged claws. The sweet smell of burning wood tantalized my nose as I neared the roof of the castle. I clicked open the heavy door and pulled my body out into the cold. Once again, I heard the resonant rings of the bell fading into the gray sky.

On the day of the tournament, the Wolverines met at Yongsan International School of Seoul at 7:45 a.m. Although the players were nervous and tired, they concentrated on their uniXied goal to win. The fervent players gathered in the corner of the court to brieXly review their strategy before competing against the International Christian School of Pyeongtaek. The players began chanting, “Woo! Woo! Woo! Woo!” The powerful cheering grew louder and louder, and everyone was ready to destroy.
The players warmed up, cracked their knuckles, and glowered at the opposing team. Joseph Jung, the captain, met with the ref to decide the Xirst team to serve. Luckily, IIS got the Xirst serve. Martin Jang served the ball, but it was returned with a strong spike by the opponent. Tom Seo received the plummeting ball, Rae-‐oh Choi set it, and Joseph Jung jumped high in the air and spiked it, which bulleted through the opponent’s court in a blink of an eye. Nervous, but with conXidence, the Wolverines tried to consummate every single move. At this pace, the players believed victory was theirs.
At that point the Wolverines were favored to win, but the opponents decided to change their strategy. The players from ICS PTK started to deter the spikes with double and triple blocks. All of a sudden, the spirit of the Wolverines diminished. The rest of the game was the battle for the lead, but eventually the Wolverines lost 14:16.

The IIS basketball season began with an intense match against Korea Kent Foreign School. The Wolverines led the game with the 1-‐3-‐1 defense, trapping the KKFS players from scoring. The team played with great fervor, and by the end of third quarter, the IIS Wolverines led by Xive points. However, the Wolverines crashed in the fourth.
The KKFS players altered their strategy in the fourth quarter. By playing strong on defense, they did not allow the Wolverines to score for three minutes. Yet, the Wolverines competed Xiercely and the score went up to 26: 25 (Scorpions up by one) with only two minutes remaining. Just when there was a minute and a half left, the Wolverines made a lucky shot. The IIS players were excited and they all believed that victory was theirs.
After the third quarter, the Wolverines were certain that we would win. They were ahead by one point and the clock was ticking fast. However, we were wrong. The KKFS boys were stronger, faster, and
more desperate to win than the Wolverines. The point guard from KKFS attacked the basket and made two free throws. Right after, the point guard stole the ball when Captain Watanabe put the ball in from the base line, the Scorpions scored again. They were winning by 32: 27. 30 seconds remained and Captain Watanabe raged to their half of the court and scored a 3 pointer. However, there was not enough time left. The KKFS Scorpions won 32: 30. The IIS players learned their lesson from this game. They learned the importance of concentrating throughout the entire game and Xinishing strong at the end. Also, they swore to win their next game no matter what. Go Wolverines!

Shaun White, a.k.a the Flying Tomato because of his red curly hair, is a young and renowned athlete who was born unhealthy, as he had to have two heart surgeries when he was a baby. This fact amazes people because he has become such a sensation in the skateboarding and snowboarding arenas despite the physical setbacks.
Shaun White may not have been the best candidate for playing sports, but he practiced hard to become one of the best. He started to snowboard when he was six years old, and earned his Birst sponsorship at his age of seven. Tony Hawk, the best skateboarder at the time, was captivated by his talent and decided to mentor him in a skateboard park in San Diego, California.
At the age of seventeen, Shaun White began to win small titles as a professional skateboarder and build his reputation. He was a champion at the Action Sports Tour and became the Birst person to win both the Winter and Summer X Games, which are extreme sports that include skateboarding, BMX racing, inline skating, and snowboarding. Shaun White has earned medals every year from the Winter X Games since 2002.
In the 2006 and the 2010 Winter Olympics, he earned 26 gold medals, solidifying his title as one of the best snowboarders in the world, and this year he won ESPN's Best Male Action Sports Athlete ESPY award for the fourth year in a row. He has also recently been featured in various Hollywood Bilms and released his own sunglass collection through Oakley. It is clear his journey as an athlete and entrepreneur has only just begun.

The Most Valuable Players are not necessarily the ones who receive all the spotlight. For the Miami Heat, the former second place team in the NBA Championships, Lebron James is not the MVP. The Heat’s MVP is Dwayne Wade (a.k.a. Flash), a quiet and unnoticeable hero of the team. Although Lebron James is issued for every game, Dwayne Wade is the one who brings victories for the Miami Heat, and he has worked hard to get to where he is.
Dwayne Wade was born on January 17, 1982 in Chicago, Illinois. He liked to play sports, especially football and basketball, but he never planned on becoming a professional athlete for either sport. However, with his father being a coach of a youth basketball team at Blue Island Recreational Center, Dwayne Wade and his brother, Demetrius, had the opportunity to polish their basketball skills at an early age. After discovering his outstanding talent and skills, Dwayne Wade decided to become a professional basketball player.
Dwayne Wade was academically successful in high school, but his talents in education did not reBlect on his ACT score. Although Dwayne Wade received private tutoring lessons from his high school teachers to improve his score, he ended up scoring one point less than what he needed to enter his dream college. With Siohvaughn’s counseling, his current wife, Wade chose to enter Marquette College to qualify in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). During his freshman year, Wade could not play in the actual conference games due to his grades, but starting from his sophomore year, he became the star of the team. For his consistent, marvelous performance, he was drafted to the Miami Heat for the 5th pick overall.
With Shaquille O'Neal, Dwayne Wade won the 2006 NBA Championships and received the NBA Finals MVP in the same year. Although Wade did not win any championship games afterwards, he remained the leader of the team. Now with Lebron James and Chris Bosh, Dwayne Wade is looking forward to winning another NBA Championships for the Miami Heat. Despite Lebron James’ fame, the truth is that Wade, who leads the team to victory, is the actual MVP.

Do you see what I see? Or are you denying reality? You are probably doing the latter. In fact, more than half of the journalism team, including Ms. England, struggled to see the image correctly. Edward H. Adelson, the father of the optical illusion pictured, explains the reasons rooted behind such a reaction.
Adelson describes that when people see this image, their brains interpret the seemingly real image incorrectly as a real object. “It’s a fantastic optical illusion, but it’s also so much more; it’s a great scientiXic parable that illustrates key attributes of the way we think,” he says.
The workings of the human mind, he explains, happen subconsciously through brain Xiltering. Therefore, each of our brains has a different way of perceiving the world. Our brains may perceive the world disparately from what it really looks like. This process, although it may fool our brains in contrived situations like this one, helps build a model of the world around us.
This characteristic of the human brain, Adelson believes, has developed through evolution. During humans’ evolutionary process, people were unlikely to see two dimensional images drawn on a Xlat surface. For this reason, when people interpret three dimensional Xlat images, it is more likely that they analyze not with a neutral point of view, but rather connect them to the realistic world, with which they are more comfortable.
In the situation above, the realistic appearance of the Xlat image tricks our brains into thinking that there is something more to it, rather than considering it as a simple artiXicial picture. This causes our brains to intuitively make an adjustment of the image to Xit the shadow created by the cylinder, determining that checkerboard A and B have distinct colors.
Although people are more likely to be unaware and ignorant of such illusionary occurrences, Adelson says that, “if we put our minds to it, if we carefully reason things through, we are able to consciously transcend our intuitions and distinguish the illusory from the truthful, just as we could above.” So, can you see it, or are you being lazy?
The AnswerHint: If you still can't see it, cover the green cylinder.

IQ TEST
Those who easily solved the puzzle would be wondering, “I solved the riddle in twenty seconds! So I can matriculate at Seoul University, right?” The answer for that question is yes and no.
The IQ test above requires two major components of intelligence: acuity and quickness. Acuity refers to sharp senses in discerning critical objects or subtle changes that help reveal the answer. For example, the object in the robbers pocket changes in each picture. Also, the facial expression of the victim develops from surprise to willingness, and eventually to unhappiness. Quickness simply means the ability to process in your brain. The faster you think accurately, the higher IQ you may have.
This IQ test and many other tests of the like, however, are missing the most important component of intelligence: effort and perseverance. Your intelligence can always develop through handwork and persistence. So even if you Xind yourself disappointed by receiving a bad result from the test, do not give up. Every single person has enormous potential to become a genius.
Evaluation:Less than 20 seconds: IQ 170Less than a minute: Average Seoul National University studentLess than two minutes: Somewhat smartMore than two minutes: Normal person
The Answer: 3-‐1-‐5-‐4-‐23: The robber asks for an apple. 1: The robber takes an apple and also asks for money. 5: The robber takes the money away from the person. 4: The robber threatens the person to not tell anyone. 2: the robber returns the apple to the person and runs away.

The term doppelgänger actually originated in German folklore. Meaning “double goer” in German, it is based on a belief that there is another existence of oneself in a form of a ghost or a spirit. In fact, many gothic novelists implied the concept of doppelgänger in their writings. One example is Robert Louis Stevenson’s "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde." In the story, the protagonist lives a dual life. Jekyll, the respected doctor, turns into the deformed and immoral Mr. Hyde at night.
These days, most people refer to doppelgängers as people with identical physical appearances. It may be fun to search the Internet for your doppelgänger, but be aware of the real doppelgänger. According to lore, if you see your real doppelgänger it could lead to bad luck or even to a miserable death!
You might automatically think that the mighty lion, the King of Jungle, would win this combat. With its sharp claws for assault, tenacious fangs to bite the opponents’ neck and suffocate them to death, manes to protect their necks, and exploding speed to snatch their prays, lions are undoubtedly ferocious predators. The result of the battle, however, is not as simple as you think.
Although gorillas are herbivores, they have developed enormous strength to protect themselves and their families from other predators. Silverback gorillas, especially the male leaders of families, are large and powerful. With long and muscular arms, these these gorillas can lift up to two tons. Also they possess rigid bones that protect them against enemy assaults and two-‐inch canine teeth for great biting force.
So, who do you think would win?

It was Thanksgiving and my teacher asked me to go to the cafeteria and get a fork. I went down and got fork and then I looked in the window. Do you know what I saw?
I saw Mr. Mok wave his hand in front of a pot and mash potatoes appeared. He threw the plate up in the air and I saw cranberry sauce. He put his hand in front of the oven and a turkey arose. He waved his hand in circles and said, “Gravy, gravy, gravy, appear!” I noticed gravy in the bowl, and I thought this guy’s amazing! He punched his Xist against his hand and stufXing showed up. Next he kicked his hand and dinner rolls emerged on a plate. And the last thing, he put his hand in a bowl and a pumpkin pie materialized. Holy smokes! I fell backwards on to the ground and fainted.
I woke up and Mr. Mok was looking at me on the Xloor. He said, “Don’t tell everyone my power!” I nodded my head and bolted back to the classroom.

Dear Joshua,
Hi Joshua. I just had a short trip to Colonial Williamsburg. Colonial Williamsburg is a very small and ordinary town. I learned a lot of thing about Colonial Williamsburg. This is some stuff I saw and learned about Colonial Williamsburg.
I liked going to the Raleigh Tavern, visiting the Governor’s Palace, and going to the Burton Parish Church. I liked going to the Raleigh Tavern because I learned a new game, chatted with my new friends, and ate Shepherd’s pie. The game was called “The Royall & Most Pleasant Game of the Goose.” You should try out the game. I even loved visiting the Governor’s Palace. The Governor is very rich and very important in the town. He is rich because he lives in his beautiful house, he has his has his own maid, and he has his own guard, a carriage, and a driver. He is very important because he makes up laws. I liked the Burton Parish Church because it was very quiet. I even learned a lot of information about God from the minister. I even saw a lot of announcements on the church walls. I even learned that the religion was very important. And everyone had to go to church. I really loved visiting these places.
Life in Colonial Williamsburg and now is very different. In some ways, if we talk in the college of Williams and Mary, we will get hit, but now we can’t. In Colonial Williamsburg there are slaves, but now we don’t. Anyway I loved the trip around Colonial Williamsburg!

Today, people rely heavily on public transportations to go to work and school since it is fast and convenient. But what’s more, using public transportations reduces global warming, which has become a major threat to the environment causing catastrophes around the world. It comprises drastic changes in the global temperature, ice caps melting in the polar regions, and the rise of sea levels. However, we can all make a difference simply by using public transportations because it helps reduce the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2).
Approximately 15% of manmade carbon dioxide comes from transportation. Thus, one of the most vital ways to resolve global warming is to reduce the use of automobiles. Many countries such as Germany and Switzerland are recommending their citizens use public transportation, which can save up to more than one billion gallons of fuel and prevent the emission of half a million tons of carbon dioxide annually. In Korea, for example, the term BMW, which stands for Bus, Metro, and Walk not the car company, exists to promote the increased usage of public transportation.
Students at IIS are also partaking in the challenge to stop global warming. 64% of IIS students use public transportation to come to school. Some students complain that using these transportations is tiresome, but they bear in their heart the disastrous effects of global warming on the world.
