Consultation
We have worked closely with the staff and students at Witton Parkand Newfield's to gain an understanding of their schools individualcharacters.
We have considered possibilities for integration of art in parallel togaining an understanding of the scheme by working with the designteam. This understanding of the scheme has led us to dispose ideasthat we know to be unrealistic and to focus of creating art that webelieve to be achievable within the scheme, timescale and budget.
We have proposed a balance between works that augment thedesign of the scheme and others that sit more as pieces of art intheir own right.
We have considered the community aspect and built in proposalsfor further meaningful community engagement as the individualprojects develop.

Theme Having explored various options we have settled upon a central theme of
Framing the Natural Theatre of a School.
We propose to elevate, celebrate, illustrate and frame the everyday
theatre of the school.
During development of the work we have asked questions such as
1. How can we bring the staff, students and community into the art?
2. How can we celebrate the natural ecosystem of the school and the daily
life of a school/community?
3. How can we frame and elevate the variety of activity that happens
within the school?
4. How can we create opportunities for constant appropriation and changeso that the school can change with every new set of pupils?
5. How can we help to frame opportunities for the school to communicate
with the wider community?

Arrival-The Entrance
Concept
We propose that the entrance should promote a sense of arrival withinstaff , students and visitors.
We want to create a sense of having stepped onto a stage (metaphoricallyspeaking) and to create an atmosphere of importance as each individualenters the building.
We want to mark the threshold and make sure that arriving at Witton Park
is experiential and that each person feels equal and important.
We also want to create something that is unique for Witton park, that hascharacter and charisma and sets the school apart from any other school orcorporate building.

Arrival-The Entrance
Proposal A strong colour scheme which starts with the external soffit support and
increases in intensity until a intense and integral colour statement at the
main entrance way.
Using red as a suggestion for stepping onto a stage and as a dramatic
threshold.
Using spotlighting at the entrance to increase the sense of stepping onto
a stage and becoming part of a performance.
Creating a contrasting and dramatic internal colour scheme considering
all surfaces and all materials.
Using unexpected materials to ensure that the entrance has personality
and feels individual and high quality.

Entrance Colour Scheme
Existing scheme Proposed scheme showing intense use of colour
We propose that the entrance appears to be glowing red on as many different planes
and surfaces as possible. This can be achieved with a built out light box approach to the
internal walls and incorporating ceiling and flooring surfaces. Laminate glass can also
be considered.

the drawn elevations that we have

the fluid high class hotel foyer that

Maybe we could gather images of
high class hotels what is it about
them that smacks of quality/rather
what is it that allows them to charge
brass handles, lucious carpets....

Consultation Feedback This is a moment, a boundary, a threshold, a sense of stepping into something
Entrance immediately looks as if it is coming out
Looks bold
Color combinations are good
Its like a teleport, looks as though you are going to something special, at themoment its just a brown door
Your eyes are fixed on the entrance, you are immediately drawn to it
The spotlight is like its cleaning you, its like wow I am walking into the newschool
Its a school but it looks more posher and more intelligent
Makes me think I am at school now , ready to win
The yellow would have to be not too bright, might give you a headacheotherwise
For the spotlight to work it would only be at nighttime the arrow would work24/7
How about neon, florescent, yellow?
I have done supply work in schools it can be hard to navigate
This is a glamorous, welcoming arrow
Welcome you can all come to this school
It makes it feel more homely

Platform- Miniature Stage SetsConcept
Instead of buying furniture from catalogues why not create unique ,
bespoke and ambiguous pieces of furniture that can be appropriated in
numerous ways by the staff and students?
These stage sets will elevate the natural activity of the school and frame
the students and staff.
They will promote sociability and ensure that there are interesting
gathering spaces at the very heart of the school, they will help to
emphasise the importance of communing ..
They can be used for work and play and also for practical reasons such as
storage and display. These platforms will be visually pleasing, unique and sculptural
components added to the main circulation area of the school.

Platform- Miniature Stage SetsThe proposal
The stage sets will be a variety of geometric and organic abstracted forms.
They will be fabricated from polished concrete.
The will sit within the heart spaces as sculptural forms .
As well as a variety of seating platforms, ramps for access they could
contain display cabinets and shelving. The more extensive they are the more they will impact on the character of
the building and the daily life of thee school.

Whats on Your Mind?Living PaintingConcept
Whats on your Mind proposes to capture and present information about theschool day and display the information as a visually appealing, complex andconstantly evolving digital images. The painting will be animated and will presentan illuminating and intriguing snapshot of the school at any given time of day.
What constitutes information of interest....how the students grade the interest of
a lesson, how the staff grade effort, how concentration corresponds to time of theday and the time of the week and term?
And more poetic information? Whether anybody has had an inspirational thoughtthat day? Whether there is a new romance in the air?
And how does the picture in school correlate to local news and happenings ?
The log could also be analysed as a visual way of understanding what is happeningin school Concept

Whats on Your Mind?Living Painting
The Proposal In taking Whats On Your Mind forward we propose to consult further
with the school to identify what types of information they find interesting
to collate and present.
Imagery would be developed in direct response to the information that we
agree that we wish to present. Information will be collected constantly throughout the day via computers
at the point of logging onto the school intranet.
There are other opportunities for collecting and presenting information,
the school dinner system, the library and the Building Management
System. The information will be presented on fixed projector screens, on led
screens through the school and could also form a generic screen saveron
all school IT.

Announcement Contemporary SignboardConcept
A contemporary signboard that can be used as a point of communication. This is a project
for the school to own and to curate , we envisage that it will change constantlythroughout the years .This proposals takes its lead from our desire to introduceinfrastructure that can be appropriated by the school, staff and community to allow for aconstantly changing interface.
Billboards can be located and used throughout the school, however we propose a key
billboard should be located on Buncer Lane as an interface between the school and thecommunity.
The board should be developed in parallel to a series of thought provoking workshopsthat will lead to the development of manual that will support the legacy of the piece.
The board can be used to impart information, ask questions, provoke thought
This project is our proposal for a developed project that can be based in the communityand the school. We see this as key interface between the two bodies and our opportunityto with both and to leave a legacy that will do the same.

The Proposal
34
We propose to develop a framework, backlit surface, and a series of letters in a
variety of sizes, colours and fonts.
The letter kit and display system will be easily accessible for regular change.
The technology will be deliberately low technology to ensure easy maintenance and
longevity.
These will be developed in parallel to a programme looking at potential use of the
signboards and further locations.
We will encourage the school to use the signboards as a means of promoting curiosityand thoughtful communication as well as a opportunity for factual information.

Consultation Feedback-Signboard
We do have something like that but it is never updated
There is going to be a school TV channel , you could explore how this is used
A clock is a good idea
Anything on the billboard should not point out individuals unless its good stuff
You would feel special if you had your birthday up there
Could be like the stocks for naughty kids
Could the bill board be curated?
I really like the thought of a constant project for the school, it would begreat ownership for the students.

Concept and Proposal
During our engagement we have discussed a variety of projects thatinvolve our input various elements of the design.
These have included, the pods, the winter garden, the outdoor
