Workforce Development Panel Presentation
Longboat Key, Florida
2017
Summary Although construction offers numerous careers, there continues to be a
critical skills shortage.
Fewer people have entered the industry over time as construction-related
careers have not been popular.
As a result, the recruitment of women into the construction workforce has
long been identified as a potential solution to overcome the labor
shortage.
Unfortunately much remains to be done to encourage young women into
this field.
Summary According to a 2014 Department of Labor report, over 9 million people work in
the construction industry, yet only 8.9% are women.
To attract female participation in the construction workforce on the same levels of female participation in sectors such as healthcare, education and finance, educating females about career opportunities when they are young is important.
Central Six Development Council Alabama Workforce Council Region 4, Girl’s Inc. of Central Alabama, Robins & Morton and AIDT/AWTC formed a collaborative partnership to present “Power UP: It’s a Mother Daughter Thing!” This was the first annual event dedicated to educate, engage and encourage girls to explore career opportunities in the construction industry.
Objectives The mission of “Power Up: It’s a Mother-Daughter Thing” is to:
Educate girls and their mothers on pathways into the construction industry
Engage girls and their mothers through one-on-one dialogue with women and
employers in the construction industry
Explore the construction industry with hands-on activities that reflect real-
world situations

“JacobsWay Progression Programs
offer a time saver for individuals who have
full-time jobs & families. It is more
appealing to be able to get through
training at an accelerated pace.”
The program benefits the trainee because
they acquire new skills, increasing their
contribution to the business & building
their self-esteem, the training they do, can
take them into other positions within the
organization – positions with better
prospects, & they’re upskilled to do new
& different tasks, which keeps them
motivated & fresh.”

difference in their attitude & job
performance.
Since becoming NCCER Certified, their
morale & motivation for their job tasks
have been excellent. This has been
beneficial to our success & productivity.
They say knowledge is power - it has
definitely given my crew the confidence
needed to do their job task efficiently &
safely.
That’s what it’s all about; doing the job
safely, providing for our loved ones, &
