15. X:?
The book The Best of Time:XWristwatches: An Unauthorized
Historyby Jeffrey P. Hess and James Dowling says that the name
was just made up.One story, never confirmed by the founder, is
that the name came from the French phrase horlogerie exquise,
meaning "exquisite clockworkor as a contraction of
"horological excellence". The founder was said to want his
watch brand's name to be easily pronounceable in any
language. He also thought that the name X" was
onomatopoeic, sounding like a watch being wound. It is easily
pronounceable in many languages and, as all letters have the
same size, allows to be written symmetrically. It was also short
enough to fit on the face of a watch.

This communication system was invented by Alfred J. Gross in
1938. His fascination in radio transmission began as a young

An _______ is a trait or an organ that appears similar in twounrelated organisms. The cladistic term for the same phenomenon
is Homoplasy, from Greek for same form. Biological ______ are
often the result of convergent evolution.
The classical example of an ________ is the ability to fly
in birds and bats. Both groups can move by powered flight, but
flight has evolved independently in the two groups. The ability to
fly does not make birds and bats close relatives. The opposite of
_______ is homology, where the ability or organ in question has
been inherited from a common ancestor. The Britishanatomist Richard Owen was the first scientist to recognise the
fundamental difference between the two, and name them.
Its a term more commonly used in literature.
